Yona of the Dawn Vol.47
AKAYONA SPOILERS
Also why is it such an issue for the dragons to go their separate ways. I feel like a lot of ppl are acting like they're leaving forever 😭 Like they grew up and had their own lives before yona and they are not bound by her anymore. Its not like they dont all love their found family its that they actually had some semblance of their own families/found family before her. And they want to tell the good news to their people! Especially for Shinah like imagine your people are in hiding because of the trauma they endured and they no longer have to be hidden away anymore. And Jaeha hasnt seen the captain in so long he finally gets to let them know that the war is over! Let alone Kija like his family dont know anything either! And he finally gets to see his grandma again. Shoot id be rushing back home too lol. Even with Zeno like he can finally live and die in peace 😭
I also feel that it was more appropriate for them to stay out of the coronation for similar reasons hak did. It was her moment and they did not want any unnecessary rumors going around and to dismantle the dragon warriors as a concept bc they aren't that anymore and yona is just Yona the queen. Not a ruler of dragons. I would love to see more of their separate journeys and to see their reunion again when Kusanagi releases the side stories but for now I'm satisfied. I just have a feeling we will be getting more stuff to tie any loose ends in Feburary. So let's just see what she has in store then!
AKAYONA SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
I find it kinda sad to see how many people are dogging on Suwon for apologizing to Yona. I dont think that this is backtracking on his goals at all. When he apologized I took it as him apologizing for the way he went about this whole situation. I mean when you really think about it did he really have to threaten to kill both yona and hak in addition to her father on her BIRTHDAY?? Like I completely get that King Il was a horrible person dont get me wrong. It's about the fact that he chased them out of their own home in addition to what he did. He's apologizing for the pain and emotional turmoil he put them through. And in the end Yona became quite the opposite of what he assumed she'd be as a heir in fact never even considered her one. I think for Suwon this is huge growth. During this last arc of the Manga we can really see how much his thoughts on yona as a whole changed and this apology shows how he really had to step back and think about what he did that night. This doesnt disregard the fact that he is a good ruler or that he failed to meet any goals he set out for but the fact that he forcefully took that position with no regard for yona or hak who he considered as his close family
AKAYONA SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
YALL CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW HAK THOUGHT IT WAS VERU IMPORTANT FOR YONA'S CORONATION WAS JUST HER MOMENT!?!?! LIKE HE WAS SO ADAMANT THAT EVEN THOUGH THEY DO LOVE EACHOTHER AND WILL GET MARRIED BUT THIS WAS HER PLACE AS THE RULER THAT SPECIAL MOMENT TO BE HERS ALONE WAS SO FREAKING LOVELY TO READ I FEEL LIKE I ELEVATED FOR SOME REASON ITS JUST SO CONSIDERATE AND SWEET OF HIM UGH I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
Sure Yeah but what about this being highlighted instead of him wanting to be king or I don't know consort. It was never said that he did not want that position.
I don't even think his thoughts of this were brought up. Like Yona is now a queen, doesn't it mean that Hak will automatically become her consort? Because the way I see it if she waits about this marriage proposals will suddenly flow to her. Hell they could even come from neighbouring countries as well as stability proposals. Would have been very interesting to read but alas I can imagine such scenarios.
I dont think he cared what position he's in as long as they marry eachother. The fact that he's completely find with just being her Guard and also making sure that her spotlight isnt taken during coronation is proof of that. I dont think he even inherently wants to be a king but if that eventually happens due to their marriage then im assuming he'll accept that and whatever comes along with it.
Also i think generally speaking both Yona and Hak never wanted to become rulers. They just wanted to help their country. Which is why during the course of the Manga they both struggled with the thought of coming back after having to flee from their own home. But what I can say is that even with that struggle they did come to terms with it especially yona with becoming queen. It wasnt her ideal position but knowing that its best for the people she accepted the role. I wouldve loved to see more of her inner monologue when it comes to this in particular but shes obviously accepted it and come to terms with the fact that she is the heir and she is a capable to take on that role.
The final chapter of akayona. I have so many feelings. I loved it kjwnkjngkjreg (Spoilers for 276)
Okay there were some things I wanted to see that I didn't (group photo of Su-won with the DDHHB, Su-won&Yona&Hak conversation, DDHHB all ending up in the same place), but like.... Those were all pure self-indulgence things so I definitely don't hold them not being in the final chapter against the series. I think this may have focused on wrapping up the more serious plot points, and hopefully the extras will give more of the silly happiness with everyone as a final bit of closure when it comes out in February. Still channeling getting some silliness with Su-won and DDHHB...
But on a serious note, I love Su-won stepping down and letting Yona ascend the throne and switching to the role of advisor. I was initially kind of ??? at his "I only killed King Il out of personal resentment" while downplaying the genuine good he'd done for the country, but then. I thought about it for two seconds. And realized this is just how Su-won operates. He always tends to talk about himself in the worst light when it comes to Hak and Yona, and he seeks out "punishment" for himself, with the way he suggests that Yona should probably execute him. And I adore Yona's immediate rejection of this, and her reminder that Su-won is Yong-hi's son, that he is kind and gentle even if he refuses to admit it. It's the contrast of Su-won's "The Su-won you knew never existed" vs. Yona's "I want to believe the kindness he showed us wasn't fake." He won't play up the good he's done in his apology because he's seeking punishment, but Yona offers him forgiveness instead. Because I think she also recognizes that for him, to admit he also killed King Il out personal resentment and that he just couldn't bring himself to discard his affection for Hak and Yona, is just a big thing for Mr. "I'm going to pretend I don't have feelings" Su-won. I think, since he's been raised to be a king/leader essentially since he was young and deny his own personhood over it especially, him stepping down and getting to finally breathe free of the role and support Yona instead is actually a really good ending for him. I loved it <3
(Re: Su-won's apology, after thinking on it more throughout the day, and also reading this post which points out that Su-won isn't necessarily apologizing for saving the country in his own way but for how he went about it, for choosing a path that satiated his own personal resentment while causing Yona and Hak so much personal pain. And I think that's really neat. Su-won admits he was wrong to place all the blame of the country's problems on King Il's head alone, which makes sense because although King Il was the head honcho and thus does bare responsibility for the general mismanagement, he was still a good person just trying his best. I think Su-won's apology acknowledges this, and acknowledges that his judgement that King Il deserved death was motivated by a personal grudge--that he wasn't as objective as he liked to pretend he was. And I think that makes sense, because Su-won had to immediately repress his own anger and grief to stave off a coup and protect King Il after his father's death and go comfort his mother. He wasn't allowed to just be a grieving kid who'd lost the father he adored. He's probably got a lot of trauma and repressed grief he never dealt with, so it made it impossible for him to approach King Il objectively, and it was only after he'd killed him and really had to endure the pain and suffering he'd thrust on those dear to him that he started to really rethink his actions. And it makes me really happy that Yona accepted his apology, recognized how much this marks his growth/healing, and acknowledged how much she appreciated him putting himself at such great risk to help her and her friends.)
I'm also kind of glad someone stayed chronically ill/disabled. Not a huuuuge fan of the "disability as punishment" thing that Su-won ending up disabled/chronically ill in a way that wasn't established before can be argued to play into (what with the dragon gods just refusing to heal it, though Kye-sook's annoyance with them over it was funny and iconic), but I do like that after teasing so much disability and chronic illness that not everyone was magically cured of everything by the end.
And as much as I'm a sucker for "the DDHHB stays together forever" thing, given how much has been decided for them, I think them getting to choose their own paths forward is actually good. There would be something unsettling about them feeling obligated to stay at Yona's side forever, but I do like that they still care about her and I'm sure they plan to visit. <3 And if they don't make their homes back in their villages (Jaeha and Shinah definitely won't, I think) or just travel indefinitely, they'll have Kija's village and Hiryuu Castle to return home to whenever they want. <3 That Yun, Hak, and Su-won are all going to stay in the palace with her is already really sweet
Anyway I adored the ending <3 I started this series in 2014, watching the anime shortly after it came out, and started following the manga around then, too. I found it at a turbulent time in my life where I was dealing with a lot of trauma, and I've always found something very comforting and healing about the series. After 11 years of following it, I'm really happy all these characters got a happy ending. I can't wait for the second season and upcoming extra, and I'll be here with my writing to spend more time with all the characters <3
Thanks for reading!
"Akatsuki no Yona " has ended today after 16 years of serialization.
The End...
Yona of the Dawn ending
I’m actually kind of emotional, it’s been so long since I started Yona of the Dawn. Of all the long form manga I keep up to date with, it’s the first to end. Skip Beat, Snow White with Red Hair, Ancient Magus Bride, Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun— It’s now been a decade for all of them. Yona of the Dawn in particular has such strong, realistic characters. Weak characters that grow because of someone they admire, until they themself become admirable. Although solid happy endings are always fun, the way it ended feels the most fitting for the cast and the story. The struggle of chosen people who only want a normal, ordinary happiness. No matter how far they may be, they’ll always cherish each other.
Yona will definitely face difficulties, but through the story we already know she’ll be a good monarch, and she has people to rely on when she falters. The bitter sweetness of saying goodbye while wanting what is best for the others. The almost guilty relief of the people who stay. This ending was paced really well. The scene where Yona is trapped and doesn’t know what to go, so Shin-ah helps her call for help, and they get a response. That’s part of the ending. Hak asking her to marry him. That’s part of the ending. This finale is really a finale, from the very beginning of this last arc. I can only hope all the other series end this well. It’s not an exciting ending, or a memorable ending. In fact, doesn’t everyone know from the start that Yona will become the monarch? It’s a very ordinary ending, but because of how it’s done, it’s the most satisfying.

AKAYONA SPOILERS AHEAD!!
Seeing the happy hungry bunch eat together again after such a long time felt healing. And them mentioning going their separate ways for now to see their own people and to let them know about how there will be no more dragons born was so bittersweet. I felt so that especially so for Shinah and Jaeha because of how they were treated along with the past dragons. It feels like a burden and relief for them.
