completely writing off the karaoke scene when it’s the first time someone from work has reached out and tried to make a genuine connection with mel is kinda crazy lmao??? santos was also the only one to take her up on her high five last season, and this season they had their cute interaction when mel got the paper shredder jammed. yes trinity isn’t Great at social interactions but she TRIES with mel which again is more than almost every other character besides langdon. like she was the first person to ask mel about how she was doing in s2, tried to comfort her about the deposition and say it wasn’t her fault, and also was the one to explain why mel was off to al-hashimi when it was obvious mel was done talking about it. and again - saw mel was sad her plans were cancelled so took it upon herself to invite her out? this is one of the most outwardly friendly moments in the show between the younger character besides santos letting whitaker move in with her so idk why you think it doesn’t count. besides literally the only net positive interaction mohan and mel have had was the special sauce scene 😭

okay sorry genuinely meant to just reblog the original post because my critique is about that post but. in your tags of your original reblog of the post you mention baran knowing memes and mel not so i feel like the idea that someone being younger means they’re immediately adequately versed in internet culture/memes is a moot point. i don’t think garcia is versed in memes or internet culture and that doesn’t mean i think she’s old it’s just like. a general understanding of the characters. like i don’t think mel or whitaker are really internet savvy or understand meme culture and their age has nothing to do with it. i think mckay probably is more so aware because she didn’t spend her younger years in med school and has a 12 year old son. baran is a older woman who spent her entire like past 20 years working extremely hard to become an attending at like 35 and was in doctors without borders like i just think the idea that she spends her very limited free time doom scrolling enough to be up to date on any kind of meme is just a bad reading of her character 🤷‍♀️ also it’s okay for women to be old ❤️

i've seen a lot of people upset that whitaker stepped into a teaching role in s2 in scenes they believe should've belonged to mohan; i have also seen people upset that langdon was going to pursue a teaching fellowship, and they believe that should have also gone to mohan.

i realize i'm poking the bear here, but i don't think mohan was a very good teacher/mentor. for as much empathy she extends towards her patients, she extends very little towards her colleagues (and towards herself!)

she has her moments. encouraging whitaker in s1 to move forward after mr milton's death was a great moment, as well as educating him on sickle cell. i also like how she responded to joy coming up with a more helpful treatment plan.

however, her way of practicing medicine is for the most part very "my way or the highway". she dismisses robby's complaints about her speed consistently and doesn't listen to santos regarding the overdose. in s2, she overrides mel's treatment plan (and also rolls her eyes/makes faces at her during the eye stroke scene...) and puts the kibosh on donnie prescribing to a patient, something he's within his rights as an NP to do.

but mostly what bothers me is her absolutely egregious failure of mentorship when she lets santos, an intern on her first day, take the fall for a mistake she made. mohan stood there and watched santos get berated and never bothered to correct langdon. sure, telling santos she does belong was a nice gesture, but it is absolutely unacceptable that mohan, as a doctor in her THIRD YEAR of residency, never even followed up with langdon to admit that it was her own mistake. bare minimum, she should have done that. (also in s2 never even checks in on santos about how she feels regarding langdon being back despite witnessing his verbal abuse of her?)

she also more or less tells whitaker you can determine who is drug seeking and who is in real pain basically based on vibes which is um. something.

some people are natural teachers/mentors. mohan is not one of them. that's okay, but let's stop making her character into someone she isn't, or rather, who you the viewer wants her to be rather than who she actually is.
