If I could rewrite any book’s ending, I’d choose Romeo and Juliet.
Instead of the double suicide and the sudden, bittersweet reconciliation between the families, I’d let them both live. Friar Laurence’s plan actually works—Romeo gets the message in time, they escape to Mantua, and years later return quietly as a married couple with a child. The Capulets and Montagues still bury their feud, but this time it’s because they’re forced to face the living consequences of their hate rather than mourning two dead teenagers.
It keeps the tragedy of the feud intact while giving the lovers the life they fought for. Sometimes the most powerful ending is the one that refuses to sacrifice the young for the old.
