Let me romanticize Hiei for a min. His story has a lot of similarities to popular asian folklores about the dragon and the pearl where a dragon guards its pearl and this symbolizes a lot of things. Now Hiei's associated with a dragon and his main goal in the series is to look for his hiruseki stone. Ik Togashi uses a lot of asian folklores in YYH but idk if this particular folklore is referenced for Hiei's backstory. If yes then god that'd make so much sense wouldn't it.

But also (puts on my yaoi glasses) imagine Hiei giving kurama his hiruseki stone.

Now think about the depth. The nuance. The yearning. He's a dragon and he entrusts his precious "pearl" over to the person he loves and trusts the most.
