I’ve seen people talking about the dub version, and I’m really curious. I watched for the first time IE in French. But apparently, the english version seems good too. Soo, I wonder if I have to rewatch IE but in english ?

Yeah, his name is Byron Love O.O It’s the same in French.. Poor Aphrodi. Well, there’re some names that they can’t pass at all… I don’t know if I have to watch or not. The humour seems good x) But they’re names and voices that I’m not sure I’ll be able to go through this..

*clear throat* allow me to explain the choice of his dub name. Afuro is named after the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite. His name Terumi means “shining beauty”. In the dub, he is named Love to reference Aphrodite, who is the goddess of love, and Byron which is the name of the romantic poet Lord Byron. So basically, his name in the dub is chosen to represent his connection with Aphrodite and thus, his beauty.

It might be ugly, but it’s actually cleverly chosen!

(Also I’d like to share with you that I am working on a translation project, studying and explaining the dub names. For now it’s only in French and will be called “Le Petit Mark des noms propres”. I could totally use some help if ever you guys have tips on the Japanese names meaning!)

 I prefer Aphrodi than Byron Love. It’s really ugly… But I admit it’s really cleverly chosen by your explanation. And I find that’s a good thing they did that. I hope your translation project will go far ! It would be nice if you could help the fandom by your skills. It will help it to understand the dub names -.-

Yeah, I prefer the Japanese name too xD Thank you very much, that’s actually my goal because I want people to understand the dub names so they will stop pulling their hair at the unexplained ugliness lol

Byron is a nice name, but it sounds weird if you give this name to a character like him :´D Afuro Terumi is such a nice name… Terumi is really pretty, since it means “Shining Beauty” ( 照 - for shiny and 美 - for beauty) And it can be a female name, too.

It´s interesting to notice how they never say his full name in the anime (He did in Fire Dragon match? I don´t remember…) and seems like he actually dislikes being called by his surname. The proof is seen on the special Dream Match, where Tenma calls him “Afuro-san” and Beta “Afuro-chan”… And he´s not amused at all.

If I´m mistaken, feel free to correct me :v

Well, I remember I liked Byron when I only watched the French version. But after Japanese version, I found that Aphrodi suits him more than Byron. Afuro Terumi is really a nice name. And it’s really a pretty one by the meaning you gave.

Yeah, it’s true that we hear his name only for a few times. And I think theysaid it in the Fire Dragon match but I don’t remember either x). Even in IE Go, when he’s Kidokawa’s coach, Kidou called him Aphrodi. It’s possible that he doesn’t like it. Now that I remember, it’s true that he didn’t seemed to like it. xD I really don’t know. I don’t think they say in this presentation on the sites. I have to check it x3

I’m sosorry but since this is about Teruru best boi i felt the need to add to this discussion;; sorry if it bothers anyone;;

I played all games up to Inazuma GO in Japanese, and I noticed something :

In the 1st game, Kageyama calls him by his real name “Afuro” (if my memory isn’t loopy). He says it like, 我が亜風炉よ (which is a… very formal way to refer to someone?? kageyama u need to stop) which reads like “waga Afuro yo” but it’s never seen in the anime, since he never really refers to Terumi alone in the anime.

In the second game, when you win the match against Zeus near the end of the game, they all go in the inazuma caravan with Terumi and Zeus’ goalkeeper, Poseidon. And then Kogure says (roughly) that Zeus is a bunch of losers, and Terumi snaps and does Heaven’s Time to freak Kogure out. And it works, because in Japanese, Kogure says “what have you done to me, you bastard-Afuro”, And then Kabeyama is like “… Afuro… pfttt” because I’m pretty sure now everyone has realized that Afuro just sounds like “afro” so they’re making fun of his name - and of course, Teruru isn’t amused and is like “wow I know why you’re laughing at me, ur so RUDE” (in French, I remember Kogure says something like “what have you done to me, u tall asparagus” and it doesn’t have the same impact lmao)

I don’t remember anything in the third game, but in Inazuma GO, when Terumi introduces himself to his Kidokawa babies, he’s like “Just call me Aphrodi-kantoku”, and doesn’t even mention his real name so I guess he’s just DONE with all the jokes and everything lmao

So yeah, I just think he dislikes it because.. well it sounds like afro and people have been making fun of this so…

Ohh!! This is so interesting! I haven’t played the old games, so thank you for sharing! So he seems to not be a fan of his surname. Even asking his Kidokawa Seishuu kids to call him Aphrodi…

And let’s not forget during the Dream Match when Tenma calls him Afuro-san he asks Tenma ディまでを呼んでくれるかな (lit. I wonder if you could call me until the -di?) or Could you call me Aphrodi? That’s kinda cute if Afuro is embarrassed by his name…
