Oh yeah. Been in flare for a hot minute. Got myself new glasses because I loved the round frames of all my Regency romance media. Trying to survive another migraine day. I’m still alive I promise. I’ll have Totenreich stuff next week on my day off.

After listening to hours of voice quotes from BO7, I think the biggest crime of this game is how much shit happens off camera between maps.

I can almost understand this choice from a storytelling/development perspective. This isn’t really a single continuous narrative. The narrative only happens in gameplay. If everything was solved on screen it would result in way more dialogue. And since development and story really depends on who you’re playing as an how many people are there, you might as well do it off screen because the average solo player was never going to hear it anyways.

But almost every single character relation changes between maps without any real explanation. Tank spends all of Ashes and Astra hating Weaver. He admits he knows it’s not his Weaver but he’s so traumatized that looking at him is triggering. Paradox rolls around and they’re cool now because Maya said so and he has no hard feelings against him. No “I’ll try to be better”, no “I’m working on it”, no explaining to Weaver why he feels that way. He’s just cool now.

Takeo spends three maps putting his trust in Richtofen, not because he wants to but because he knows he should. He offend defends him from the perspective of “He’s a lot smarter than us and for those reasons we should follow him.” Suddenly in Totenreich he hates Richtofen. And that’s before learning what he actually did. They show up to the village and he just goes “Wow I should’ve never trusted you, look at what you did!” As if looking around that village indicates anything that Richtofen did.

We see this with Tank and Maya where suddenly between maps he isn’t interested anymore. No explanation. He’s just done chasing her. We see this with Nikolai and Weaver where suddenly they’re homies. No explanation. Nikolai is just don’t holding resentment. Grey and Maya have gone from friends to acquaintances between maps for…I dunno spin the wheel and take your pick I guess.

I think people with media literacy and critical thinking skills can probably connect the dots and it doesn’t need to be spelled out. But even for me it just makes the relationships feel disjointed. Like every map might as well be a standalone because when I spawn in I have no idea how these characters are going to feel about each other anymore.

Kowakujō will be interesting to see what gets spit out this time. Maybe everyone will just outright hate each other idk.

one change i’m super excited for in opla is the fact that sanji hasn’t told anyone he talked with mr. zero yet. like all the crew knows is that he fought two agents and got the enteral pose. they don’t know he rage-baited the head of the criminal organization so hard that he is now enemy number one. cannot wait to see how this plays out
