Day 13 - Selma Burke⠀ ⠀ Did you know that a black woman sculpted the portrait of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, that lives on that dime currently in your pocket but was never given the credit?⠀ ⠀ 🎨Selma Burke was born in Mooresville, North Carolina 1900⠀ ⠀ 🎨She studied nursing at St. Agnes Training School for Nurses in Raleigh, NC. In 1928, she moved to Harlem and became a private nurse. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨While in New York, she started exploring the arts. In 1935 Selma became involved with the Harlem Renaissance cultural movement via her relationship with the writer Claude McKay, with whom she was roommates with at the time. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨Selma is one of the few female artists to achieve fame during the Harlem Renaissance⠀ ⠀ 🎨Selma started teaching for the Harlem Community Arts Center under sculptor Augusta Savage, and later went on to work for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) on the New Deal Federal Art Project. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨One of her WPA projects, a bust of Booker T. Washington, was gifted to Frederick Douglass High School in Manhattan in 1936. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨Selma competed in a national competition for the Recorder of Deeds Office in Washington, D.C. But after feeling like she couldn’t capture the likeness of FDR from photographs, she wrote the White House and, to her surprise, was granted a 45 minute sitting with the president to sketch him. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨The finished plaque and was officially unveiled in 1945 at the Recorder of Deeds Building, where it still hangs today. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨The design on the dime is officially credited to U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John Sinnock, but scholars believe that Sinnock “borrowed” aka stole Selma’s original design. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨Officials at Mint were positive that Sinnock deserved full credit as they claim both he and Selma had sit in sketch sessions with the president. ⠀ ⠀ 🎨“This has happened to so many black people. I have never stopped fighting this man and have never had anyone who cared enough to give me the credit. Everyone knows I did it”⠀ ⠀ 🎨Her last monumental work was the statue of Martin Luther King, Jr that currently graces Marshall Park in Charlotte.⠀ ⠀ 🎨Selma Burke passed away in 1995, never receiving credit.
Im having trouble explaining this to myself, the fuck?
So Stormy Daniels, Aka: The Ex-Pornstar who was paid to sleep with Donald Trump in a case of Adultery literally no one was surprised by, released an Interview talking about the experience. And one of the things she mentioned was that he was watching Shark Week and was obsessed with it in the most Trump way ever. I’ll post a little exert cuz from that Interview because it contains more gold than the entirety of 45′s tacky as fuck apartment: “The strangest thing about that night — this was the best thing ever. You could see the television from the little dining room table and he was watching Shark Week and he was watching a special about the U.S.S. something and it sank and it was like the worst shark attack in history. He is obsessed with sharks. Terrified of sharks. He was like, “I donate to all these charities and I would never donate to any charity that helps sharks. I hope all the sharks die.” He was like riveted. He was like obsessed. It’s so strange, I know.” And because every intelligent person in the world has firmly taken the stance of “If I want to be able to look myself in the mirror tomorrow, I will do the opposite of everything Donald Trump does”, Everyone started donating to Shark Charities in an amazing example of collective beneficial pettiness. I’m thinking there’s a marine biologist out there right now somewhere like “Listen if we can just get him to say he hates Sharks on live TV we could repopulate the entire fucking ocean by 2019.”
In an amazing example of collective beneficial pettiness
😂This😂post😂is😂life😂
When y’all gona donate to poor people who can’t afford health care tho
Never. Whites value animals more than people and I’m willing to bet all who donated were whites.
This is very accurate
