a confused eyebrow raises, taken back by sherilyn's strong and blunt rejection of his playful teasing, which is ... unusual coming from her. playfulness is a common aspect of their dynamic, so, for her to turn it down so abruptly and sternly ... could only imply that she means business, that this is no game she is playing.
only now does ish realize that, despite her nonchalant, causal mention of her true feelings towards him, she is being completely serious. she's in love with him, and she is confessing it to him over the most mediocre dinner he could have possibly cooked up for the two of them. the steak is more well done than medium rare, and the mashed potatoes are ... less than to be desired this time around.
the embarrassment is ... an understatement, as he looks down at his lap for a moment to gather his thoughts together. this is what he was afraid of. his hands begin to fidget under the unease, and once his gaze returns to face her, she is looking away from him, clearly upset from the implication that he was not taking her seriously to begin with.
he gulps a breath of air, as if to buy himself time to provide an adequate response. he really doesn't want to fuck this up, but there's a imp of fear within his gut, clawing at his insides. as much as he wants to say how he feels, to tell her that he loves her too ... the anxiety convinces him this is dangerous territory he's passing through, and as a result, he, again, avoids saying anything of the sort.
instead, he focuses on trying to remedy the situation. " sherilyn. " he starts, pausing for moment. " look at me. " he nearly begs, his gaze softening as the reality of the situations hits him. " i'm sorry for not ... understanding you sooner. " he apologizes, waiting for her to look him in the eye.
ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ" you really mean that ? you - uh - love me ? "
sherilyn was never known for holding anything back, and so to sit there with him like that after his reaction, in silence, was rather suspicious. saying what she did only felt right and talking through it with somebody else to understand her feelings better helped as well, but she might have not understood just how serious this was until he teased her about it in a joking manner. something about it rubbed her the wrong way and it got her to feel this punch inside her stomach that she usually felt when remembering her dad. it made her rather sad.
her facial expression changed slightly as she looked down to her plate, a fork in her hand building somewhat of a cave out of those mashed potatoes before destroying it and starting over. the corners of her lips were turned slightly down now, though she was so sure that she wasn’t showing anything! not only did it make her sad, she also felt embarrassed and soon enough, her cheeks began to feel warm and turned a slightly different colour. she didn’t like this at all.
she heard him call her name all of the sudden, but she didn’t pay attention to it, instead bringing the fork to her mouth to have another taste. she looked up to him once when he asked her to, but then she got back to her plate right after as if she couldn’t bear that. so they were all wrong... it was not love. he even called her by her full name! with a deep breathe in and out through her nose, sheri listened to his apology and then finally allowed for their eyes to meet again.
❛❛ yes, ❜❜ she whispered with a certain firmness in the word, surprised by the way her body felt like she couldn’t let all that many words out anymore. her hazel gaze dropped to his lips only for a moment before returning back to his eyes, but it still made her remember the kiss they shared after she chased after him once she found out that he left. left to search if there was anything left of her and james’ father, to possibly bring him back to them. ❛❛ you are a good man, ❜❜ sherilyn breathed out as her throat tightened, looking away once more. it felt almost unbearable to look at him now, her head and heart heavy from the emotions her confession set free. there was once a time that the first sight she got of him terrified her and she mistook him for a bad one, but now he brought her feelings of a completely opposite nature. suddenly, it seemed not so easy to handle.

You allow Nancy to move closer to you, glad that her reflection is still in the mirror. As much as you want to trust the woman, it's not made easy by her choice in men. That, and the fact you've learned trust doesn't really exist how it should, not in their world at least. Trust is easy to break as long as you have enough money to bribe someone with. Not that you can blame anyone for that— it's a dog eat dog world, after all.
Despite Nancy's promise, you can't help but scoff. How many times have you heard that same statement? "As much as I appreciate the sentiment, don't make promises you can't keep." Perhaps you appear callous, but you're simply attempting to help Nancy out with truth of the matter. "And I suppose if anything I'm glad it was me and not you." Nancy has modelled various bruises gifted to her by no-one other than Sikes. Ass much as you don't particularly wish to take the brunt of his displeasure, at least Nancy has a chance for some respite (however short it may be). "Caught up? You mean this hellhole isn't your centre of attention?" you joke, flatly. Finally finishing up with the understanding that's all that can be done for the wound, you finally displace the cloth and turn to face Nancy properly. "What could be more important than here?"
fantine’s words made nancy bite down the tongue two times in a row. however true they might be, it didn’t make it any more pleasant to hear somebody else say it out loud. perhaps she would much rather endure what she so often did than to listen to fantine just throwing it in her face. she closed the shawl tighter around her arms as if seeking some protection in it, shifting uncomfortably on the chair. ❛❛ well, i am not glad about it, ❜❜ she breathed out a little frustrated, ❛❛ all of that belonged to me, not you. ❜❜ there was not a day she would ever be grateful for the way bill proved his love to her now, but she was willing to take it any day - especially to keep him away from the boys as well as from other innocent people; as much as fantine.
