@zara-stripe
History: The Minoan civilization had a rapid decline following the eruption of a volcanic island close to Crete where they had settled. The eruption was so large its effects were felt all the way in China.
Me: Oh yeah. The Mediterranean had a lot of problems with volcanoes every few thousand years or so. So why was this one special?
What the island looks like today:
Me………….. oh
Ye.
They had several extremely advanced items for the time period (3000 BC to c. 1100 BC) which other civilizations had not developed yet for thousands of years (such as a working plumbing system). They had a writing system we have no idea how to read as no writing system evolved from it and it’s not related to any of the other writing systems we do understand (ancient Greek, Ancient Egyptian etc etc)
They had a extremely peaceful nation from what we can gather, as none of their art showed soldiers or military until near the end of their civilization, and instead showed scenes of agriculture, games, every day life and things along those lines instead.
“tiddies out” civilization as I like to call it due to the common dress of the women as shown in almost all art.
(men are drawn with darker skin than women)
I heard somewhere that they were possibly a Matriarchal society but I need to do research on that as I’m not entirely comfortable with declaring that as possibly true just because I heard 1 person talk about it. I want to see some sources first.
But yeah. Many people believe the Minoans were the basis for the Atlantis story.
Plato wrote the story of Atlantis in 360 BC and based his Dialogues are supposedly quoting Solon who went to Egyp between 580BC and 590BC and Solon said he got the information about Atlantis from the Egyptian Records.
The Minoan Civilization, like I said, was between 3000 BC to c. 1100 BC. So by the time Plato wrote his dialogue on Atlantis, which is our only Primary source, the Minoan civilization was something that had died more than a thousand years ago. Meaning this was ancient history to the people of ancient history.
I was curious what this untranslated writing system looks like. It’s called Linear A and it’s pretty neat!
Oh! Forgot to mention this is the civilization where the “Phaistos Disc” came from that made a lot of historians very angry because it was made using techniques that weren’t suppose to exist yet.
Also while looking for this photo to show you what it looks like I found this which says the Disc’s writing has been more or less deciphered. So THAT’S exciting! I’ve been wondering what the fuck this thing was since I was 17 and remember hearing people say it was possibly a board game or some other item. I remember some people saying it was possibly a prayer based on where it was found or something. It seems “prayer” or at the very least hymn was right on the money.
The disc is not written in Linear A (or Linear B). However it may be closely related in language as it IS a Minoan item.
It seems they’ve at least figured out the pronunciations more or less, using pronunciation conventions from Linear B. (idk I’m not a linguist. This is all really confusing to me tbh)
Basically we can read it. But not understand it.
This Dr Owens guy who is doing the linguistic research says the words they’ve figured out so far are;
IQEKURJA, which may mean “pregnant mother” and/or “goddess.”
IQE, which may mean “mother” and/or “goddess” and which appears repeatedly on the disk.
IQEPAJE or IQE-PHAE, which may mean “shining mother” or “goddess.”
And these words appear over and over again on the disc. So most likely a prayer or possibly a hymn

This is super interesting! I’ve noticed that one of the most common way for a naturally occurring fake story to appear is through the combination of a previous moment with a current event. It feels like fan fiction, almost-- I wonder if it might not be a deeply human thing to do-- “omg, remember the elephants that fell asleep all curled up and cute? what if they fell asleep in the tea because everyone’s at home?”
We tell the stories we wish were true. We tell stories that make us look good, or feel good, or feel right.
