It’s recently been found that even hive insects rest. Bees will play with colorful toys. Ants sleep for about 1 minute but they do it so frequently it amounts to a few hours per day. Even trees take breaks.

The only things that work without rest are machines; literally everything that lives requires rest.

EVERYTHING THAT LIVES REQUIRES REST. STOP JUDGING YOURSELF FOR NOT BEING A ROBOT.

robots require very frequent breaks! welding machines generally have it programmed in that they can’t run so long they melt themselves. ive overseen two different manufacturing robots now and each of them were fragile, finicky idiots that require constant maintenance and repair. they pause in between moves, in between jobs. you’re always keeping an eye on programming errors, on coolant levels, on heat. you’re always pulling bits of scrap out of joints, sweeping up debris, washing off nozzles and untangling hoses. and even then it snaps a chain and takes a whole morning’s vacation.

even robots need downtime.

I’m still sad that Sweeney Todd isn’t on broadway anymore. That show is so magical and I am forever grateful I got to see it live.

Honestly I miss it more that beetlejuice. Like beetlejuice is great, hell it’s my favorite musical of all time, but it leaving just didn’t hit as hard as Sweeney leaving. I want to go to New York and Sweeney my Todd all over the place again.

ohhhhh I was you once. you are INCREDIBLY brave just for getting through each day and I mean that with my whole heart!!!!

the adults around you may say dumb shit such as "you should get outside more" and "you should try and sleep better" and "I don't think you're getting enough vitamins". and it sounds really flippant and dismissive and OFTEN IT IS but as someone who had a Horrible time as a teen and has since figured out as an adult how Being Alive Works: ALL OF THAT IS GENUINELY TRUE. UNFORTUNATELY. TO A HUGE DEGREE. SO SORRY. IT'S DUMB I KNOW.

it's unbelievable how much these things can impact your state of mind. and your physical well-being. even if the rest of your life is messy and difficult and stressful, these things will at the VERY LEAST give you a CRUCIAL buffer for dealing with them. you don't want to be stressed AND dehydrated AND sleep deprived. it amplifies your misery to the power of ten. speaking as someone with a permanent mental disorder AND a permanent health condition. some things can't be cured but they CAN be made so much more bearable. you deserve your life to be bearable!

but these things can feel impossibly tough! so do them gently and on your own terms. find a sugary drink that boasts about the vitamins it includes and make it a weekly treat. make bedtime a treat that you look forward to! fun dim lighting and a bit of chocolate and a good movie. snuggle into bed. sleeping well was genuinely life changing. I am looking in your eyes as serious as I can be. you gotta sleep as close to 8 hours as you can manage. if not more. 5 hours is better than 4. etc. you will notice your emotional resilience increase, your memory will improve, your body will hurt less. sleep is a wonderdrug.

hang out with your friends and get there by walking or riding a bike at least partway. pick up dancing. dance BADLY. the endorphins you get from exercise are so extremely good for stress. my number one coping mechanism in times of stress (besides relying on other people!!! important!!!) is to get on my bike and just GO.

and PLEASE let yourself be bad at things. don't Give Up but do remind yourself how fresh of a person you are. you're fairly brand new to this whole Being Alive thing! it's okay to fuck up bigtime. you WILL live and grow even if it feels painful and embarrassing. I have so so much sympathy and awe for every teenager because it is hell and a half sometimes.

I've been wanting to make this post for awhile because saying things in public make me feel better about them albeit the fact they don't get much attention

I think ultimately a fundamental truth that I know, yet have to accept, is that everything turns out okay in the end

Its so easy to have bad stressful or even traumatic events occur to you and think you'll never recover but you always do. Things always get better, and the suffering isn't forever.

It's hard to accept that, because human beings are wired to look at negatives. But no matter what's happened I still wake up every morning and I still continue to live, and everything ends up fine in the end. Even if new stuff arises, that stuff always dies down too.

Everything will be okay, even if it's hard to acknowledge that
