“Bread.. eggs..” I muttered to myself as I looked over the list a hundred times. I had already been to the store, my groceries in my arms, but I just wanted to make sure I actually did get everything I was supposed to.
There was nothing missing, nothing added.. but I read over the list one last time to make sure.
With a sigh, I looked up to the endless sidewalk ahead of me.
I lived not far from the store, though walking to it always felt like a troublesome task. A hundred million steps for a few items once or twice a week? I could always take my car, but then it's a waste of gas.
My hands found their way to my hair as I ran my fingers through it. Goodness. I was not in shape. A walk like this shouldn't stress me out.
“Kalie!” I heard someone exclaim with excitement, though I didn't care much to turn around and see why. Maybe it was their birthday or a colleague they hadn't seen in awhile.
It was awfully loud though.. and awfully close-
Darkness enveloped me so quickly I had no idea what was happening. Walls clamped around me, weightlessness soon followed as I was lifted into the air. This could not possibly be happening right now.. it was a Saturday afternoon! Not a day to be kidnapped on.
My breath felt raggedy in those few seconds that everything was in a whirl. It was only a few seconds though. My whole life flashed before my eyes in just a matter of seconds.
The light came back, but I was now sitting on the palm of a giant's hand. I clutched my chest like death was here for me as I stared up at her.
She squinted at me, adjusting her glasses before gasping loudly.
“Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry! You're not Kalie!” It was only another moment before my shaky legs touched the pavement once more, the giant then patting me on the back. “I'm so so sorry about that! I hope you have a good rest of your day.”
With that, she set my groceries on my lap and left. I'm sure she was embarrassed about it, but I was mortified. Not a word had a chance to get out of me in the whole altercation. What if that had been so much worse? That I really would have been kidnaped?
My head throbbed from the anxiety, but I just brought my hand up to my forehead, closing my eyes as I took a shaky breath in.. and out.
It was just an accident. It was. I'm ok. I just need to get home.
I stood up, still somewhat shaky, but dusted myself off, grabbed my bags and began walking home again.
“Bread.. eggs..” I muttered the words, now distracting my mind from what had just happened.
