The sword catching scene in Pirates of the Caribbean took hours to film because the actors kept missing the catch, so their reactions in the final shot are genuine.
shoutout to slow growers, late bloomers, people whose plans got derailed by circumstances beyond their control or their own choices, people who never had a plan to begin with, people who have had to start over when theyre too old to feel like theyre supposed to be where they are, people who cant pretend theyre built for the environment theyre in, and everyone who's not living the life they thought they would. im proud of you for making it this far and i hope you keep going until youre happy ♡
Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward
its like strippers and the economy to me
What the “haha millennials can’t even make phone calls” crowd fails to appreciate is that making phone calls is a far more user-hostile and physically uncomfortable experience than it was 15-20 years ago.
It used to be you picked up a landline, which had physical buttons and at its smallest was still 3x larger than a smartphone, dialed the actual location you wanted to call (instead of a corporate call center) and you could actually talk to someone with access to the store computer/government records/dinner reservations that actually fucking applied to you.
You could also actually hold the phone with your shoulder without it hurting, which freed your hands up to cook or eat, or type on a computer, etc. it didn’t require an accessory you had to keep charged. It was built into the phone’s physical design!!!
It sucks more to do phone calls now! Like it just does!!!
The most mundanely dehumanizing experience I’ve had in the last few years was when I called a domino’s to troubleshoot a pizza order and they directed me to a call center in a different state.
“We had to automate it because nobody would do the job!”
PAY YOUR FUCKING WORKERS
It used to be that you could reliably get on the phone and talk with a human being.
And while human beings have their issues, and occasionally you will hit one who may be from outer space, they usually are fairly easy to talk to about things that are obviously just Some Bullshit To Get Resolved.
"Hi, Town X Gas and Electric? I got a bill saying you guys would cut us off if I didn't pay my overdue balance of $0.00 and I think you can probably see why I have a problem doing that."
"Sorry, ma'am, we're switching computers and it's a nightmare. Let me get that fixed for you, if you'll hold for a minute…okay, that should be it. If you get another notice like that, call back and ask for Dennis."
"Thank you very much, Dennis, you have a great day, you hear?"
But you just try explaining to a robot that you can't owe $0.00 to Gas and Electric, because as far as it's concerned, it's a number, and numbers are things you either pay or you owe, and the computer that represents the AI's entire existence is saying you owe this number—and the fact that it is literally not an amount of money that exists cannot make a difference to something that, itself, does not exist in most meaningful senses.

is that song actually character-coded or is your brain a character-shaped hammer looking for lyrics to nail down somewhere
I've reached the point where cynicism is a major turn-off for me. You're not smarter than idealists, and you're not helping.
Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.
#yes! cynicism reads as very juvenile to me#and yes prev often stemming from teen pain
Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"
I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.
i've been phasing the phrase 'google it' out of my vocabulary and going back to 'look it up'. fuck you youve lost your generic trademark privileges
seconding these tags by @ragsy: #if the social consciousness has decided that duckduckgo is the Only Othet Search Engine#might i suggest 'go duck yourself'
There is absolutely a platonic explanation for that
But I will also entertain the non platonic for my own edification do u understand
So...how much of the bad discourse surrounding Steven Universe is just because people were really hoping that the Gems would beat up Andy DeMayo in "Gem Harvest"?
I was astonished to learn that there was controversy around this episode, because I felt like it was just kind of a normal children's cartoon about getting along with difficult relatives; and then I looked it up and learned that it had the extremely inauspicious timing of airing right after Trump's 2016 victory, and, yeah, okay, I can understand why a children's fantasy about reconciling with your obnoxious conservative relatives and getting them to accept your alternate family structure would play rather poorly at the time.
I think that Rebecca Sugar probably assumed, like most of the world that wasn't my specific flavour of extremely online in 2016, that Clinton would crush Trump and that this episode would maybe help to smooth over divisions; but of course what ended up happening is that an episode about how you should be empathetic towards your bigoted relatives ended up airing just as your bigoted relatives were going around victoriously hate-criming people in the street.
Watching it now, though, it ends up feeling wistful more than anything. Like, yeah, sure, it doesn't work like that, and we all know that now...But wouldn't it be nice if it did? It feels like a pleasant dream.
Steven Universe is fundamentally a power fantasy—but the fantasy is being able to get through to people and heal things. The power is love instead of strength.
"Like, yeah, sure, it doesn't work like that, and we all know that now...But wouldn't it be nice if it did?" Yeah....
