Insert cool quote here
Insert cool quote here
I don't have anything, so take this brainrot Kel pic, with the help of translator I found in google I regret nothing
Sunny is forgivable because he was a child who was not in a good rational mindset and made an impulsive decision with much more dire consequences than anticipated
Jimmy is not forgivable because he was an adult who had to make several conscious decisions to do what he did and does nothing but repeat his horrible behaviour
Both games are about forgiveness but two completely different ends of that spectrum. Omori is about how forgiveness can be healing and help those recover, and mouthwashing is about how sometimes forgiveness does nothing but enable horrible people to continue their abusive behaviour
Sunny is forgivable because he was a child who was not in a good rational mindset and made an impulsive decision
First of all, his murder of his sister was not an impulsive decision. The game doesn't indicate that Mari physically restrained him to stop him from running away. This means that instead of reacting like a realistic 12 yo child and running away to someplace safer - either his bedroom or the bathroom, which both were on the same floor they were having their argument on - Sunny consciously employed physical force.
In that moment, he saw hurting Mari as a bigger priority than running away from her because he was overwhelmed.
Secondly, killing Mari wasn't the only bad thing he's done. In fact, he's got a consistent pattern of being an ass before and during the game's events. The game conveniently glosses over all that since focusing on it would make the character too unpalatable, I suppose.
You say what Sunny did was the fault of an irrational mindset but also claim Jimmy "had to make conscious decisions to do what he did", as if the latter's "conscious decisions" weren't influenced by his irrational mindset of "I'm the hottest shit ever". It's undeniable Jimmy's vile, but by your logic, he's as forgivable as Sunny is (or, conversely, Sunny's as vile as Jimmy is)
Finally, "he was a child" is not an excuse in Sunny's case. A 12 yo child would not react to his sister's desecrated corpse with "lol I got off the hook :D"
Hey! So your take is insane!
Before anything else your arguments are terrible you are not referencing any official media you are just referencing your own biased work and one out of context photo from the game.
His murder of his sister was not an impulsive decision
First off, contrary to what you were saying he was in fact restrained by his sister
The both of them are grabbing each other in this photo as you can see. And if you were being grabbed, the first thing you have to do to get away, which is probably what sunny was trying to do is to get them off of you, and the most effective way to do that is to push them.
Secondly, like you said he would’ve been overwhelmed and the situation he’s in is one that would trigger a fear response, your fight flight or freeze, fear responses are not conscious decisions, they’re not even made on impulse but on pure survival instinct, and when you can’t run, like when you’re restrained, you will fight back. as someone who is trained in dealing with life or death situations situations (a lifeguard) you are trained to protect yourself from those who are drowning because sometimes people do dangerous things because they aren’t thinking at all, let alone rationally
Thirdly, the intent matters so much here, he did not intend to kill her, obviously, he didn’t even intend to get her to fall, he wanted her off of him so he could be left alone. He did not know how much force he put into that push he did not know what would happen if she fell, as he never intended it, and he of course didn’t intend for her to die. Because he is 12 and that is his sister and he loved her more than anything.
I also have a question for you. Is this consistent pattern of assholery your referencing able to be explained by him being shy, him trying to repress his trauma, or a reaction to the immense pressure his sister put him under, because that is all I can think of from the game itself. Remember the sunny ending is the canon one, the hikkikomori endings are the players own decision.
And before we move onto Jimmy, quick development fact! Up until you’re about 25 you do not make decisions with the logical part of your brain basically at all! You make it with your amygdala, the emotional side, so adding onto the fact sunny is, again 12 (really weird of you to persecute this 12 year old like that but I digress) AND in a fight or flight situation AND has animosity against his sister BECAUSE of the recital which is what they were fighting about mind you. I can perfectly see where that mistake would come from and how it 1 wasn’t a conscious decision on his part and 2 not at all even close to his intentions 3 something he clearly regrets, that regret fuels the whole game.
Jimmys “mindset of irrationality” starts at the very least after the ship crashes when he’s afraid of the responsibility he has to take for his actions, so after the rape of Anya and after he consciously (as he had to veer the ship towards the asteroid and turn off the autopilot) crashed the ship and liedto everyone about who had done it and what had happened because curly couldn’t defend his case, he also consciously told daisuke to crawl through the vent to get Anya even through his apprehension and actively mocks and hedumanizes everyone on the ship due to his egoist and selfish nature, and he never shows an ounce of regret even once.
I do not see how you view this prepubescent child, and a monster with a horrific record of this behaviour who does nothing but continue it on the same regard but whatever
So your take is insane! Before anything else your arguments are terrible you are not referencing any official media you are just referencing your own biased work and one out of context photo from the game.
I have to say that I appreciate your choice to open your response with a slew of insults. Really sets the stage for a productive conversation.
Exactly what kind of official media am I supposed to be referencing in this case, if you don't mind me asking? Omocat's left toe?
"biased work" Classy. Is it biased because you don't agree with it? XD
The both of them are grabbing each other in this photo as you can see.
I can't see shit, actually. The photo is too blurry to see anything. What other sources for your claim do you have aside from a blurry photo? :)
The datamined captions for the Truth photos would've noted that she grabbed him if that actually was the intent. All she is said and seen to have done in the caption for Photo of a Fight and in the photo itself is blocking his path to the staircase's narrow passageway with her body and yelling at him.
Funny how quick Sunny is to interpret her scolding as a "fight", eh?
like when you’re restrained, you will fight back.
As I have explained above, it's not indicated that he was restrained.
I've explained that in the first post I linked ro in my response. Perhaps you would've kept that in mind had you bothered to read it.
he did not know what would happen if she fell,
Are you seriously insinuating Sunny's so stupid that he wouldn't know falling from a big height would be bad for the person who fell? lmao
He nearly died when he fell from a big height into the lake. That's why he has his fear of heights in the first place.
Because he is 12 and that is his sister and he loved her more than anything.
And yet he felt at peace when he saw her desecrated corpse.
That, interestingly enough, is a point of mine you didn't address.
Is this consistent pattern of assholery your referencing able to be explained by him being shy,
1) There's a difference between having trouble finding the right words and walking out on people while they're having a breakdown.
2) "Able to be excused" is a better way to phrase it. That's what you're doing, anyway.
him trying to repress his trauma,
Trauma is not an excuse for assholery either. That's pretty much what the game tries to say via Aubrey - her big rant near the stump on One Day Left has her admit the trauma of Mari's death was the reason she was an asshole to her friends and resolve to be better.
Judging by the fact you (and most of the fans) still readily use trauma as a defense, however, I think it's reasonable to assume the game has failed to communicate the message.
or a reaction to the immense pressure his sister put him under,
"Mari was mean!" is not a valid argument because the game only tells you she was without showing it throughout its runtime.
Quick development fact! Up until you’re about 25 you do not make decisions with the logical part of your brain basically at all!
The "fact" you're using as an argument is pop-culture psychology and has been disproven by clinical professionals. Despite that, it has been also used as an argument to prevent trans teens from transitioning.
This is not the defense you think it is.
(really weird of you to persecute this 12 year old like that but I digress)
1) You're talking about Sunny as if you're defending a real child. He's a fictional character. That means I'll talk about him however l please.
2) Sunny's age ceased to be a mitigating circumstance the instant he - and I have to emphasize that - felt at peace upon seeing his sister's desecrated corpse.
[it's] something he clearly regrets, that regret fuels the whole game.
He never does anything with it, though. It doesn't compel him to be a better friend to the group now that he has a chance to reconnect with them.
As for Jimmy, it seems that you've missed my point and took it as me arguing that he wasn't thinking clearly when he did what he did. What I was saying is that Jimmy's mindset is "irrational" in the sense he still believes he's always in the right and can fix everything even when it is clear the only thing he's doing is making shit worse. Thus, most of the decisions he makes are also influenced by his "irrational" mindset he's the "hero" of the story. At least, that's how I saw it.
lied to everyone about who had done it and what had happened because curly couldn’t defend his case,
Like Sunny lied about the cause of Mari's death to his friends to cover his own ass? :)
actively mocks and hedumanizes everyone on the ship due to his egoist and selfish nature
Because making your friends' pain - the pain you were responsible for - all about yourself is not selfish at all!
I do not see how you view this prepubescent child, and a monster with a horrific record of this behaviour who does nothing but continue it on the same regard
1) The logic I used to make my argument was yours.
2) Sunny's got a record too. I linked to it.
The only difference between those two is that you're willing to excuse Sunny's behavior.
1) I’m insinuating your work is biased because everybody has a bias when it comes to their interpretation of the work, had you actually linked canon material that explicitly states he was at peace with his sisters death, consciously chose to kill her, or that he wasn’t restrained I’ll actually listen to you
2) I’m not insinuating he was stupid. As someone trained in lifeguarding, fight or flight shuts down your higher reasoning, in fight or flight he wouldn’t think at all that the stairs were right there and had she fell she could be seriously hurt or dead.
3) please learn the difference between forgive and excuse. And also the difference between explain and excuse. I forgive him, meaning I recognize that what he did was wrong he killed his sister, I can’t argue that that isn’t a bad thing. But given the situation, how he felt, and how he chose to be honest, even if that took a while, that he deserved to be forgiven and to not have that burden him. And those things explain his behaviour I don’t believe it an excuse I believe it an explanation to get into his mindset.
4) he does do something with that regret by the end of the best (and canon!) ending, he does admit to the truth and even him reconnecting with his friends can be seen as him taking steps towards confronting the truth
5) he doesn’t feel at peace because she’s dead, he felt more at ease because he thinks that the problem has solved itself (when it hasn’t but again, he’s 12 years old and riding off an adrenaline high where he won’t be in a straight rational mindset)
6) by your logic of “Mari was mean doesn’t count cause they never showed us” the captions from the truth photos don’t count because they aren’t in the game period.
7) jimmys irrational mindset caused by a warped view on reality and Sunny’s irrational mindset caused by his survival instincts setting in are not comparable
8) show me Sunny’s criminal record including sexual assault, battery, and murder. Being a brat is not on the same level as being a rapist and a murderer, period.
9) I can forgive a child better than I can a rapist, who would’ve thunk!
I’m insinuating your work is biased because everybody has a bias when it comes to their interpretation of the work
By the same token, all of your arguments are invalid. Everybody has a bias when it comes to their interpretation of the work, after all.
Now, with that out of the way,
had you actually linked canon material that explicitly states he was at peace with his sisters death,
Photo of a Lie's description is right there. It doesn't cease to exist just because you refuse to acknowledge it.
consciously chose to kill her, or that he wasn’t restrained
Still waiting on sources other than one blurry photo, by the way.
and how he chose to be honest, even if that took a while,
He did that for himself and himself alone.
And those things explain his behavior. I don’t believe it's an excuse, I believe it an explanation to get into his mindset.
You've used those things as arguments in defense of what Sunny did, which is what excusing those actions is.
he does do something with that regret by the end of the best (and canon!) ending, he does admit to the truth
Are you seriously arguing I should applaud Sunny because he did one (1) good thing at the very end of the game?
he doesn’t feel at peace because she’s dead, he felt more at ease because he thinks that the problem has solved itself
Well, yes. That's the point I was making. He feels at peace because he won't have to suffer any repercussions, and this sentiment outweighs the shock at seeing his (ostensibly) beloved sister hanged.
That's not the reaction an average 12 yo would have. As such, Sunny's age is not a valid mitigating circumstance.
By your logic of “Mari was mean doesn’t count cause they never showed us” the captions from the truth photos don’t count because they aren’t in the game period.
My point was that Mari's perfectionism isn't really given any attention despite being the reason the argument happened in the first place.
show me Sunny’s criminal record including sexual assault, battery, and murder
He has murder at most and voluntary manslaughter at least under his belt, that's for sure. Maybe complicity in Basil's cover-up too lol.
Last thing I’m gonna say, it’s incredibly pathetic that you’re so salty about this game that you decided a 12 year old boy is just as bad as a rapist because I DARED to make a comparison of the two not to show how one is unequivocally better but to show how their themes are two sides of the same coin. Bitch THATS what I was going for, you’re fucking insane give it a rest
I appreciate that you've started and ended your conversation with me with a slew of insults instead of actually paying attention to any of my points or citing the sources I asked you to cite.
Hope you have a nice day, kid.
Jimmy is an egotistical, delusional, and narcissistic person who wasn't capable to be a leader and a manipulative person as well. He r-word anya, literally make Curly not being able to do anything and literally the reason why Daisuke and Swansea died
Sunny is a child, he pushed Mari out of stress and fear, he suffered a lot due to the traumatic incident he had to witness plus the grief and guilty due to the consequences of his actions
Honestly, I am baffled as to how you think this two characters are the same, you probably need to seek a brain specialist and check your neurons, I'm sure God gave you a wrong patterns recognition. And hey maybe you can test your IQ in there and have some advice to get smarter.
Also, a friend of mine decided to come up with rebuttal
First of all, his murder of his sister was not an impulsive decision. The game doesn't indicate that Mari physically restrained him to stop him from running away. This means that instead of reacting like a realistic 12 yo child and running away to someplace safer - either his bedroom or the bathroom, which both were on the same floor they were having their argument on - Sunny consciously employed physical force.
Yes, but as we are both entitled to using non canon materials (the album captions are considered non-canon), I shall use mine:
This video: timestamp 0:35 Mari screams “Where do you think you’re going?”
Anyone with reasonable deductive skills can see what she means by this. The timeline was as follows:
Pre 0:35: Sunny attempts to get away. There would be no reason for him to pull his sister as he’s getting away, so there’s no contact, 0:35: Mari screams “Where do you think you’re going”, 0:37: Mari falls down the stairs.
Now in those 2 seconds, who is more likely to make first contact? The angry one or the one getting away.
Bingo.
Mari grabbed Sunny, closing the distance between them, and Sunny having a flight or fight response (normal for a human being, by the way) and shoving her off him, thus down the stairs.
Voila.
consistent pattern of being an ass.
Let me address each argument for you.
(Apparently) was aware of Aubrey's troubled situation at home, wasn't shown doing anything of note to help and/or support her
What can a ten to twelve year old do other than talk to their friend and make sure they’re okay? (Which Sunny did do a lot with Aubrey by the way, shown through the video montage of “Duet”).
Whined about having to help his friends build their treehouse
What twelve year old wouldn’t complain MENTALLY? It’s not being an ass, if he was, he would’ve outwardly said all those things. It’s just that mentally he doesn’t want to do it. But he does because he knows it's only fair to the others. That’s called respecting other people and compromising for them.
Threw a tantrum that resulted in the death of his sister because he couldn't watch cartoons for as long as he'd have liked
Once again, I am allowed to point at non canon as you have.
0:04: Sunny says “Gosh, you-”
0:05-0:014: Unintelligible
0:15: The violin crashes
Firstly, no one screams “Gosh, you-” without the other having not done anything.
Secondly: Do you really think Mari stayed silent for those 9 seconds of unintelligible noise?
Was throwing the violin down the stairs the best option? No. Do I think it was just caused because he didn’t get to watch cartoons? No. Mari obviously said something to provoke it.
Blamed Mari for the argument as if she forced him to practice even though he himself begged her to let him join her
Something tells me you don’t have younger siblings tbh. It’s very normal for kids to want something at first, but change their minds later after they realise the work that has to be put in. (E.g: Wanting to go to school when they’re younger but hating it as soon as they start) Also, you’re disregarding Sunny’s motive: He never wanted to do violin because he loved the violin. He just wanted to spend more time with Mari.
Also to address “ as if she forced him to practice “
You think a 15 year old whose parents booked a venue for their recital wouldn’t be pressured and in turn pressure their younger sibling into making it PERFECT? Just food for thought.
Chose to resolve his argument with Mari by violence even though he had the option to run away instead
Already addressed this :)
Was relieved that he got away with accidentally killing his sister
For someone who has a brain and must scream, it sure seems otherwise. Do read what it says. “For a moment, you feel at peace. You hate yourself for feeling this way.” He was relieved, sure. But he hated himself for that. Because he didn’t want to feel relief.
Chose to lie to his friends by omission and let them believe they had somehow failed Mari due of the assumed nature of her death as a suicide, irreversibly scarring them
Chose to let Basil take the fall for blacking out Mari's photos in the photo album, which entailed Basil becoming the target of Aubrey's bullying and wore Basil's mental health down to near-psychosis by the time of the game's events*
Half of the game is just showing the consequences to Sunny doing that though. It's portrayed as a bad thing. It’s also realistic to those experiencing PTSD or shock. I don’t want to make this too long (it’s already 800 ish words) so just read it here https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/post-traumatic-stress-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-2035596
Walked out on Basil - his best friend - when the latter had a mental breakdown despite Basil begging him to stay
Considered leaving Basil to his death as a legitimate option, twice
Seems to have been content with thinking of doing nice things for Basil (e.g. watering Basil's plants in his dream world) as opposed to actually trying to support him in the real world
Walked out on Hero after seeing him crying over the piano
Again, just read up on the link I sent earlier. Specifically avoidance. It’s not morally correct but that doesn’t mean it’s in his control either.
Wasn't shown to feel any guilt or shame from having a picnic with the people he lied to near his dead sister's grave
I don’t know if you’ve played the game, but you like to bring up “Sunny and the player aren’t separate” so… Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe the reason Sunny doesn’t show any guilt in-game is because he’s discovering the truth as much as we, the player are? Just food for thought
Twisted the supportive words of the people he lied to to alleviate his own self-loathing over committing manslaughter
This is just a wrong interpretation entirely lmfao. The battle against OMORI isn’t a battle against self loathing. It’s a battle against the denial that kept him from telling the truth to begin with. Sunny doesn’t kill himself in the bad ending because he hates himself. He kills himself in the bad ending because he wants to hide the truth and knows he can’t do it for much longer. Why do you think he doesn’t end up killing himself in a majority of the hikikomori routes even though OMORI has taken over?
Told his friends the truth shortly before having to move town, thus avoiding the direct consequences of his confession and leaving Basil behind again to face them alone
Not exactly his choice as I’ve said earlier.
Is only concerned with how his friends' pain affects himself at the end of the day
Can’t say much about it (I’m a little stupid and can’t be bothered to spend over an hour doing this) other than I wanna see an analysis of My Time next. Sure it's not made for the game, but it was chosen for a reason.
What Sunny did was the fault of an irrational mindset
What Sunny did was the fault of him being a child witnessing a traumatic incident being led by another child who witnessed the same incident and then the rest are just the effects of PTSD. A majority of the reason the incident took place the way it did can be explained by: Sunny’s in worse shock than Basil due to him having to process that he was the one who killed his sister, and Basil just wants to protect him. If anything, Basil's at fault.
”Lol I just got off the hook”
Lol I explained this already. You used the same point twice.
