Mei took a deep breath in and then sighed loudly. She really hoped that Ochako actually believed that this was a funhouse mirror. If so it was going to take a lot more convincing than she thought in order to get her new friend to see things how they really were.
She stepped to about where Ochako had been standing before and then began to wave her arms back in forth. Her reflection matched her movements perfectly as reflections often did. Hopefully, if there were any actual doubts that this wasn’t a real mirror, her gesture managed to assuage them.
“My reflection looked perfectly normal when I was standing next to you and my reflection still looks normal when I’m standing where you did before. There’s no weird trick of the mirror Uraraka-chan. How you looked in your reflection is exactly how you always look.”
She reached out and tried to give the brunette a reassuring pat on the shoulder. Hopefully, this would help make Ochako feel a little more confident about her looks. Otherwise, they’d be out of luck, as Mei didn’t have much of an idea how to help her past this.
“If you think that that girl in the mirror was hot then you should think that you’re hot. It’s as simple as that!”
Wait, why was she sighing? It was a funhouse mirror, right? Or some sort of mirror-like device that made people look hot? Obviously it had no effect on people who were already hot, but still. That was the only way to explain how Mei looked so good. Even when the other girl moved to the spot she had stood in seconds ago, she still looked like a goddess. There had to be some trick; it was the only way to explain why Ochako suddenly looked so attractive.
“But...maybe it...doesn’t work on you..because you’re..already hot...”
She managed to mutter, sounding a bit like a certain nervous wreck she thought way too much about. As her rant transformed into unintelligible syllables, she tried to suss out a reason, any reason, to describe what was going on.
But she couldn’t find one.
She looked to her reflection, then back Mei. Then back to her reflection, and back to Mei again. This continued for a few minutes, as if she was trying to dissect every possible answer to this conundrum.
And then she stopped.
When she looked back to Mei, a few tears were already streaming down her face. A shaky hand pointed to the brunette in her reflection.
“Y-you...really think...that...she....is me?”
strange headcanon: uraraka's favourite pokemon is shaymin because it reminds her of Midoriya for some odd reason.

Without saying a word, Mei grabbed Ochako by the hand and dragged her off to the development studio. Instead of actually bringing her any sort of invention, Mei just dragged her in front of the mirror that was used for displaying inventions.
“Okay, now I want you to look at that hot girl in the mirror and try to say that she’s ugly. I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You’re not going to be able to do it because you’re not ugly.”
While this may not have been the best way to go about it, Mei’s heart was at least in the right place. She couldn’t stand to have a cute girl compliment her while putting herself down. It just wouldn’t be right for her to let it continue.
“And if you look at the pink haired girl standing next to her, you’ll notice that you do compare to me.”
Ochako soon found herself dragged off by the pinkette, and dropped in front of a tall rectangular device set in a wooden frame. The surface seemed clear, like the cleanest of water, yet it did not ripple at all. It was solid. Such a strange thing, almost like a glass of some sort. And if it were like glass then...
Wait, did Mei Hatsume invent the mirror?
No, that’s just silly talk. Mirrors existed way before either of them were born.
Ochako wasn’t really the type to look in the mirror all that much. Just to brush her teeth, maybe check if her hair looked alright. But never for long. At least not as long as she heard the other girls do. Normally, she just kept quiet and pretended that she, too, took that long, just to not seem weird.
But this was the first time she’d actually been forced to get a good look at herself through the mirror, as others would see her.
“Is that...?”
She muttered, trailing off. The brunette staring back at her looked adorable as heck! Those cute blushing cheeks, bright eyes that shown like stars, and- dare she admit it- a larger than average bust. How could this be her? No, she couldn’t believe it. It made no sense.
She didn’t deserve to look hot.
“N-no...you must be mistaken. That must be a ...funhouse mirror or something. I don’t...I don’t look that h-hot.”
Note that she said nothing about the pink haired goddess next to her.
She was caught aback by the shiver that went through her when she uttered the word ‘hot’. Until about five minutes ago, she’d really never considered another girl that way. But being this close to Mei, talking to her like this...
Was it wrong to like a girl?
motheroinvention:
Mei wasn’t entirely sure what to say. She didn’t exactly consider herself to be the end all be all when it came to being attractive, but she’d never describe herself the way that Ochako was describing herself.
“You’re not like that at all! Why would you even think something like that? Has someone been telling you lies?”
Up until today, Mei had always thought that Ochako had hated her. Yet she now found herself wanting to defend the girl. It was odd how easily opinions could change at times. Maybe that machine wasn’t as wrong as she had thought that it was.
“Listen. Your description of me … isn’t the most accurate thing out there, but your description of yourself is even less so. And you know … I’ve got a baby that could probably help you realize that.”
For once Mei actually didn’t have an invention to help with the situation. She was just planning on dragging Ochako in front of a mirror and making her look at herself.
“No- well, at least I don’t think people are lying to me.”
Sure everyone had their secrets to hide, but that was different.
She had intended to leave it at that, though to be honest, Mei’s proposition sparked a bit of interest in her. In days past, she might have considered the inventor’s equipment a little exaggerated and out of place- and she really doubted that an invention would prove her description of herself wrong- but she did trust her enough to try it.
Kinda weird, right? Until a short minute or so ago she thought she’d hated her.
“Are you sure? I really...really doubt someone like me could ever compare to...well...you.”

Mina was just so cheerful that, honestly, Uraraka had a hard time ever feeling blue around her. Aside from Deku and Iida, she was the only one she trusted with her...ahem...situation. And even then, she was the only one she told about the tears. How she cried so much after that fight. How she didn’t stop until her tear ducts ran dry and her eyelids swelled shut.
And that’s why they were currently sitting cross-legged next to each other beside Uraraka’s bed, a gallon of Rocky Road icecream in each of their laps. Mina had demanded they spend the weekend together, dealing with those negative emotions the only way that made sense: burying them in cheesy movies and excessive amounts of junk food.
Thankfully, the toll that their Quirks took on their bodies actually allowed them to eat like pigs without fear of getting incredibly fat, even if Uraraka generally maintained a low appetite so she didn’t puke so much if she overtaxed her Quirk’s limits. Especially on days she purposely taxed it. Mina had been present for a few training sessions that...well...went as well as you might expect.
When their conversation that night had turned to boys, she couldn’t help but blush even harder when Deku was brought up. Sure, she’d convinced herself that falling for him was a bad idea, that doing so would only take focus away from her training, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was there.
But there was that one issue. Deku was always so...flustered. Yeah, that’s a good word. He almost never talked to a girl properly, acted like they had three heads or something. Come to think of it, there probably was someone with three heads. She thought it was a second year from the business classes. Sort of a tangent, but eh. Whatever.
Anyway. Deku. She had to admit, it was a bit annoying. She was just Uraraka. She wasn’t scary or anything.
Mina chose to reject that statement harshly.
The way the pink girl had spoken to her, called her strong and smart, it made her cheeks burn even more than thinking about Deku. She almost wanted to curled up in the corner and hide her head, hoping the peppy girl would stop saying such nice things about her. Shining Meteor may have been a cool attack, but it was hardly effective in that match, so did it really matter if it could potentially hurt someone else? What good is an attack anyway if it only works some of the time?
A frown split her lips when Mina said that was why people should be intimidated by her. Sure, she got what she meant to say, that Midoriya’s reasoning was a bit silly, but still. Was she really that scary?
Before she could voice her concerns, Mina had already scooched closer. If her last comment had made the brunette blush, this one made her turn red as a cherry. No, she wasn’t...no, she was far from...she couldn’t be... pretty. The other girls were pretty. Especially Mina. She thought her eyes were like mini stars, glowing with an inner light. And while others may find the pink skin and little horny things weird, Ochako thought they were cute and made her look unique.
She was gorgeous. And Ochako was...
An image of a deflating balloon passed through her mind.
Something like that, probably.
But that was when she dropped the bomb.
Perhaps Uraraka shouldn’t have been zoning out then, as it seemed to make Mina crack a bit. Before she knew it, the pink girl’s hands had her shoulders in a tight grip, and her lips had descended upon hers.
Her first reaction was surprise, her eyes sparking wide open as if she’d been stung by a bee or something. The next was nervousness- that was her first kiss. And it had come so suddenly, she wasn’t quite sure how to react. And it had come from Mina, her best friend.
Her lips were...warm, oddly, despite the cool taste of Rocky Road against her lips. And they were wet. Probably from the icecream. But maybe a little bit from her acid, albeit heavily diluted. Just as she began to calm down and relax against her lips, giving in to the bubbling desire to taste more of the dessert on her lips, the other girl pulled away.
Her lips were left buzzing from the hard kiss, and her thoughts made less sense than a screen door on a battleship. Or was it submarine?
Ochako tilted her head to the side, catching a glimpse of Mina backing away. A slight wave of concern passed through her blank eyes when she saw beads of liquid dripping down the other girl’s cheek- was she crying??
She was too focused on Mina to hear her muttered apology, her thoughts too jumbled to think much more than ‘fire bad, tree pretty’. A small squeak cut through the silence as she scooted over too Mina, throwing her arms around the girl’s neck in a tight hug, pausing a moment to flick away her tears with her finger. When she finally found her voice, she whispered softly, addressing the first thing that came to mind.
“Am I...really that scary?”
There were plenty of others scrambling her brain, but this one stuck out more than the rest. She was worried, perhaps rightly so, that Mina thought she was scary. Why else would she that insist her Shining Meteor attack was grounds to call her intimidating?
let’s go on an adventure!

motheroinvention:
It seemed that both of them had self-esteem issues when it came to their looks. The two of them were probably going to be there for a while.
“Me the attractive one? As if. Have you looked in a mirror lately? I’m surprised you aren’t already dating someone.”
Well if she was going to compliment Ochako then Mei might as well go all out with it. Getting this kind of stuff off of her chest was probably healthy anyways.
“Y-you think s-so?”
She half-yelped, startled by how blunt and forthright her...friend? was being. No, it just didn’t make any sense. No one would want to date a poor little dork who wouldn’t be able to lavish her boyfr- ...significant other with lavish gifts and expensive dates.
Wait, why’d she cut herself off there? Was it wrong to simply think ’boyfriend’? Her thoughts were as jumbled as her face was red; she could barely sort out heads or tails of anything now. Only one thought managed to break through.
“But- but...you’re so...”
Not quite finding the words, she attempted to pantomime a pair of voluptuous breasts and a curvy figure. Things that Ochako believed she herself lacked.
“A-and I’m so...”
And she deflated like a balloon.
Literally flattened to the floor.
And then got back up again as if it were nothing.
“...That.”

motheroinvention:
“I mean of course it’s broken. How else could it pair someone like me with some as attractive as you?”
Did she just say that out loud? No, of course, she didn’t say that out loud. She must have just imagined herself doing it. No matter how much Mei wanted to force herself to believe that, she couldn’t.
“… Pretend you heard nothing.”
“No...bshhh...no...I’m not- no... I can’t be...attractive...”
Her face was redder than blood, her cheeks burning as if Todoroki had thrown a wave of fire at her. How could such a simple thing as calling her attractive gotten her so worked up? She mumbled to herself in a low voice, trying to make sense of what she’d said. Some of her mumbling, apparently, was audible.
“...You’re the...attractive one...”
Wait, shit, did she just say that out loud?
No, not her. Flustered Ochako. There’s a difference. Ochako isn’t responsible for what Flustered Ochako says. Flustered Ochako is an idiot.
😘 mua!
Send a kissy face for smoochies with Ochako
And now her face is red.
It had seemed like any normal day. She came to class, fantasized about Deku for, like, two seconds before putting it to the side because it would do nothing to help her become a hero, obviously. And then she kicked that test’s ass. Which was awesome, frankly. Throwing people around like they were nothing.
Those judo moves Gunhead taught her really were awesome.
But then. THEN!
Mina Ashido, That super cheery girl with pink skin and an acid Quirk.
She kissed her. Pulled her into a tight hug and just...fucking...kissed her.
Forgive her French. Ochako is a very nice girl who never swears. Ever.
Ochako’s deep red blush sent tingles down her spine. This was her first kiss and it was from a girl. A girl. She wasn’t supposed to like girls. Right?
So why was she hugging her close too? Why was she enjoying the kiss, despite the sheer volume of blushiness?
