I've finally finished my Dread Wolf tarot embroidery from Dragon Age Inquisition! Clocking in at 64 hours of work, it measures 11.5 X 19.5 cm and I've been chipping away it during my downtime at work. My fellow community council members on Dragon Age: The Veilguard may have been biased while helping me choose which character's card to do, but I'm so grateful they did because it was so much fun to work on, and so different from the previous ones.
This is my fourth large Dragon Age character card project, and the first one I started since I uprooted everything to train as a costumer. Having a portable yet elaborate project was comforting while travelling for new experiences.
Now, who's excited for the new game later this year?!

Thread Painting: Embroidery as Fine Art
Have you ever seen an embroidery so realistic it looks like a painting? That's the magic of thread painting, also known as silk shading or needle painting. So many names, one stitch, know as long-and-short stitch. But let’s dive into the world of this beautiful art form!
Pills of History
Thread painting has roots that stretch back centuries: examples of long-and-short stitch were found in Coptic cemeteries in Egypt, date back as far as the 5th century BC.
In England, thread painting was first used in Opus Anglicanum embroidery, a technique used in Medieval period. In Asia, particularly in China, silk shading flourished 5.000-6.000 years ago, producing stunning pieces that often told stories or depicted nature in its most vibrant form. By the 17th century, an increase in trading by the East Indian Company made silks more available and silk shading started to appear in other types of embroidery, like Jacobean crewelwork.
The Art of the Blend
This technique never fails to impress. Its photographic quality makes the subject matter instantly jump onto at you. The thread painting’s secret lies in the subtle shifts of color. Embroiderers use long-and-short stitch, but vary its length and direction to create smooth gradations. Choosing the right colors and strategically placing stitches is key to building dimension and lifelike details.
Your Thread Painting Toolkit:
Fabric: choose something that won't stretch, cotton or linen are great options.
Threads: you can start out using a typical DMC Mouliné embroidery thread, but generally, you should use a single strand thread (the Mouliné has six strands).Using a range of light, medium, and dark shades within a color family allows for smooth blending.
Needle: the thickness will depend on the thread and fabric you choose. I usually use size 10 with a single thread.
Embroidery hoop: there are different hoops and structures to hold your fabric in place while you embroider.
Embroidery scissors
Pattern (Optional): many thread painters use their own designs, but there are also patterns available for beginners.
Ready to Pick Up Your Needle?
Thread painting is a beautiful and rewarding art form. While it takes practice to achieve photorealism, the basic techniques are surprisingly approachable.
So why not give it a try? You might be surprised at what you can create with just a needle and thread!
This kicks ass. Disabled activists are protesting for their rights in South Korea by literally just riding the train during rush hour.

I mean, if you have so few accommodations that a wheelchair user can seriously affect train schedules just by using the train, then I think they’ve got a problem.
Well done, Korean disability activists, for making your point clearly and bravely.

Not enough people here on tumblr are talking about this movie but the director built the entire studio from ground up for this work of art. It's ten years of effort put in by animators, artists, and musicians. It is an ANTI-WAR film with beautiful metaphors and transitions and dialogue. It is an entirely HAND-DRAWN animated film in a country where animation didn't even have the scope before.
The themes of the movie accurately depict even the current world events and the story itself is also very sweet.
The director of this movie was very inspired by Studio Ghibli. Please please make sure to watch the movie as well as the documentary of the making of this film when it comes out in other countries because it makes you feel like you can do anything and achieve any goal no matter how impossible it seems.
ALSO, the director named Mano Animation Studios after his CAT!!!!!!
fun fact about languages: a linguist who was studying aboriginal languages of Australia finally managed to track down a native speaker of the Mbabaram language in the 60s for his research. they talked a bit and he started by asking for the Mbabaram word for basic nouns. They went back and forth before he asked for the word for “dog” The man replied “dog” They had a bit of a “who’s on first” moment before realizing that, by complete coincidence, Mbabaram and English both have the exact same word for dog.
on a similar note, a traditional Ojibwe greeting is “Nanaboozhoo” so when the French first landed in southern Canada they thought that they were saying “Bonjour!” Which is fucking wild to think about. Imagine crossing the ocean and the first people you meet in months somehow speak French.
Given that we famously don’t know the origin of the English word “dog”, I have decided to adopt an utterly batshit folk etymology conspiracy theory. As a treat.
For a while I just assumed that the English “potluck”, was derived from Chinook Jargon “potlatch”. Both describe comparable practices of guests contributing resources to a larger community-wide feast. But a little digging quickly reveals no etymological relation; instead of one, I got TWO! interesting linguistic insights into distinct cultures.
False cognates are pairs of words that seem related, but aren’t. Here are some of these amazing linguistic coincidences. What are False Cong
Here’s some more!
Not quite the same thing, but the word “car” predates the word “carriage” by a significant margin and is unrelated to the word “caravan” which is from Persian.
Went to the Aboriginal artifact exhibit in Chicago. And it’s interesting. How many blankets and masks and totem poles say ‘unknown source’, because every five seconds my mom would stop and point to something and say. “Pauline’s grandmother made that,” or, “That belongs to Mike’s family, I should call him” because. It’s all stolen
“These artifacts were excavated by archaeologists from a burial site in the 1970’s. The remains were returned for reinterment” Okay cool, cool cool. So you just, like. Dug up the grave of a respected family member, stripped them naked, mailed their body back to their family and kept everything they were lovingly put to rest in. Like a graverobbing bastard
Reminds me of the time when of the elders from my hometown started touching a totem pole in the Museum of Anthropology out at UBC and got yelled at by the staff, only to tell him that the pole had been stolen off of the front of her bighouse when she was ten years old.
Museum collectors did the equivalent of kidnapping a family member when they were away fishing.
The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act requires all institutions that receive federal funding to repatriate remains and artifacts so if you can identify the source of something on display absolutely get a hold of that institute’s repatriation office
Real talk, expanding the Supreme Court is a bandaid solution, which may be necessary but may also lead to serious future consequences for our judicial branch at large. Here are some steps that would actually work to repair the harm done to SCOTUS:
At least one of the liberal judges must begin writing dissents not based on the content of specific cases but based on the illegitimacy of the court. The dissent must state that this court is corrupt, financially and politically, and that none of its judgments should stand as valid case law. This opens the door for #5.
Impeach Justice Thomas for financial crimes. There is abundant evidence of these.
Impeach Justice Roberts for financial crimes. There is abundant evidence of these.
Open investigations into ALL Supreme Court judges (not just the conservative ones - the liberal judges signed that abominable "we are in charge of our own ethics" decision, too) to seek evidence of financial or political misconduct. Proceed accordingly.
Open a Greylord-style Special Commission to determine the chronological extent of the current systemic corruption of SCOTUS. We do not need direct evidence of quid pro quo bribery in specific cases to justify overturning them. The presence of financial misconduct related to even one case means the absence of a bribe in another could have contributed to its findings. Overturn every single case tried under systemic corruption.
This would create a massive, tangled knot of case law, precedent, and judgments, all of which would need to be walked back, possibly decades. It would be a nightmare. It would be necessary. The Cook County courts tackled the same beast during Greylord. There is historical precedent, and the alternative is to continue building our legal system on corrupt case law.
