i think one of the big things that people get wrong about dib as a character is that a lot of the fandom portrays his desire to capture zim/save the world as some sort of moral do-gooder behavior when the only real reason he actually wants to do that is so he gets fame and glory. he doesn’t actually have much of a moral backbone. he just wants people to praise him and to laugh in people’s faces about “being right the whole time”. he doesn’t actually care about saving lives and doing the right thing. he will point blank do bad shit in order to achieve his goals, actually. there’s no righteous motivation here for dib. he just wants to climb the “look at me!” pedestal. and probably throw a middle finger at his dad.
