Rick taunts Morty whilst blackout drunk about how he’s going to turn out just like him, because addiction’s a genetic disease. He, later on, drugs him with a parasite that makes him hallucinate his pain and suffering into a happier scenario where he’s helping people. It turned an explosion into a happy cartoon sun. And somehow, he’s surprised and livid when Morty wants to see things that way all the time. Rick tells him that it’s inevitable that he’ll be a miserable addict. Morty watches in despair as his grandfather and mother drink to escape their pain. Rick’s still somehow surprised that Morty would think that using would be a valid option. After Morty marches off, Rick says that now would be a good time for a drink and then cut to Morty drugging himself.

i think one of the big things that people get wrong about dib as a character is that a lot of the fandom portrays his desire to capture zim/save the world as some sort of moral do-gooder behavior when the only real reason he actually wants to do that is so he gets fame and glory. he doesn’t actually have much of a moral backbone. he just wants people to praise him and to laugh in people’s faces about “being right the whole time”. he doesn’t actually care about saving lives and doing the right thing. he will point blank do bad shit in order to achieve his goals, actually. there’s no righteous motivation here for dib. he just wants to climb the “look at me!” pedestal. and probably throw a middle finger at his dad.

From least wubi to most wubi:

1. Dib - wins least wubi due to his infection of rabies and general lack of fear and morals.

2. Esther - she is an honorary paranormal boy. She also tends to lack fear. She leans towards being an instigator rather than one who is passive or submissive.

3. Dipper - he is next because even though he does get nervous in canon when facing off scary bullshit, he’s a go-getter. He’s not the type to shy away from conflict.

4. Wirt - bit more Wubi than dipper due to his tendency to avoid conflict unless it is necessary or unavoidable. Although I haven’t seen the show more than once or twice so feel free to argue if you disagree.

5. Morty- Current holder of most Wubi of the paranormal boys. He’s the most submissive and most prone to moral dilemmas. He’s highly susceptible to others viewpoints. He wants to please his grandpa and ends up in a lot of pretty messed up situations because of that.

My definition of a Wubi character is one who is more likely to be babied, or victimized in canon or just within my own heart. This is not an attack on any characters abilities to be tough or capable. Just for funsies. ^_^

Definition of paranormal boys is a boy or boy-adjacent character who studies and seeks out the paranormal on a regular basis. This is not the same as being a paranormal creature.

@emeraldspiral made a post reminded me of one of my first fic ideas.

Consider the following: Dib at the tender age of 17 decides he fucking hates living at home and runs off to pursue his dream of hunting ghosts and Bigfoot. Maybe it’s just a couple weeks he needs to find himself or something. This occurs after a huge fight with his dad.

Professor membrane happens to have a big press conference coming up which will require the presence of his children. Something about putting on a show of being a family-man to garner sympathy points after a failed experiment escaped again.

Membrane replaces dib with either a soulless clone or a robot.

He’s almost perfect in mimicking Dib aside from his sudden disinterest in the paranormal. Zim sees through the facade immediately. Gaz, who is suffering from her own lack of friends and notices her brother being odd in a new way, ends up forcing her way into Zim’s plan to go find his “enemy”. The voot, however, is down for the count. They end up having to hitchhike across the country to track Dib down and make sure he’s not dying in some abandoned house somewhere.

This trip involves Zim being nervous and weird and bonding with Gaz over her almost equally heinous social skills.

Gaz has never had girl-friends, she’s too angry at school and it makes people nervous. Zim’s always nervous so it cancels out. They do bad makeovers in the back of some stolen van. They break many laws. Zim tells traumatic funny stories from elite training. Gaz tells Zim about the time Membrane revealed she didn’t have a mom and that she was just a clone, like Dib. They go on a fateful journey to find a charger for Gazs game slave. Gaz watches Zim try to play vampire piggy slayer and throw a rage fit because he’s not very good yet.

And eventually when they find Dib (who bought a camper with PM’s credit card) he’s very gross and un showered but mostly fine. He’s been spending the last several weeks having a blast and maybe even met another cryptid.

Gaz and Zim beat him up.

After that, they remain low-key friends. They share a Minecraft world and blow stolen money on infinity Nikki rolls. They discuss video games and Gaz shows Zim anime and Yaoi

Dib hates both of them.
