Tried to redesign the riders to be a little more believable? … as in convincing but not historically accurate? Tried taking the ac:Valhalla approach, I think they look kinda cool (pls ignore hiccup he was my test & I can’t get him to look any better but this is more abt design than polish I guess)

The helmets were kind of a nightmare and irl Viking’s defo wouldn’t wear any of those designs but I wanted it to still feel like their helmets. Snotlout esp needed his horns they’re too cute I’m sorry.

You asked for it, so here's a selection of my storyboards from that scene! This scene went through quite a bit of changes, and we were trying out different things for every version, so some of these are from my rough pass, and some are from the clean pass. I went a bit too over-the-top for my original rough pass -- Kenji full-on cried and everything -- so that got removed even before the clean pass, but I thought it'll be fun to see haha. For the clean pass we also tried something where you can't see the crack until both of them had left the room, but in the final the spiderweb crack was brought back.

Aside from the usual professional influences from other movies and Arcane, there were two stupid inspirations from this scene I'd like to share. Ben reaching for the door but Kenji pushing open it first is inspired by the Dreamworks feature building's second floor female restroom, where I had this happen too often when I tried to open the door from the inside that it instilled a primal fear in me. Second-to-last image is a shot of Ben reaching for Kenji but just missing him that got taken out at the end, and the inspiration was us seeing Leah Atwick at lunch one day, but she couldn't hear us, and Heidi tried to reach but just missing her by an inch.
