Okay, so, I hadn't been using tumblr much, and thus saw no reason to make a blog for this, but I need a place for hdg stuff, because I only have my characters and now I'm using this app more because of them. So here we are.

No, this isn't a plant-enthusiast blog (atleast not that kind of enthusiasm). As much as I like my garden, this isn't about that. I'm gonna post human domestication guide stuff on here. Please block me if you don't wanna see that, thank you <3

Probably still going to relate mostly to rp topics, but we'll see? (I don't actually write stories. I can't do them justice. I just like reading them, because other people are really good at writing!!). I made this blog so I can reblog stuff somewhere other than my rp blog(s).

i dunno if i vibe with the idea in hdg that the majority of a given sophont species is independent and doesn't get domesticated

the point of this fantasy is that no one slips through the cracks, right? i don't want to be able to slip through the cracks by never working up the courage to volunteer to be a floret

a huge appeal is not having to make that choice, but if the majority of people aren't florets it's one that has to be made. and if i can't make it, am i just left abandoned? idk

This is a really good thought! There are answers for this, actually, and kind of a lot of them. So many that I kind of wilded out under the cut, but the TL;DR is that independence as a concept in HDG is in deliberate conversation with the impossibility of falling through the cracks, and they exist to show different ways you would be enthusiastically not-abandoned that participants in violent resistance can't show as easily.

(Also, I wrote enough words here from a place of personal experience that I feel the need to disclaim, I'm not a loret or anything, I just write here.)

HDG as Disability Allegory

The point of this fantasy is 100% that nobody slips through the cracks, and this is a load bearing quality to the disability allegory HDG is built around.

When Involuntary Domestication is brought up, the factors that compel it are usually summarized as "danger to one's self or others." The fact that these same criteria are the common justification for involuntarily sticking someone IRL into an institution isn't a coincidence, it's the point. What does it mean to be "a danger to one's self?" There are some obvious answers that would merit strong content warnings, but in IRL practice, the definition tends to be broader than that. Neglecting your own need to eat and drink might easily be considered a danger-to-self, for example.

Florethood is an allegory for institutionalization, with the crucial difference that the caregivers responsible for it are sincere in their goal of doing it for their wards' own wellbeing, and hypercompetent enough to reliably achieve that goal. The other aspects of institutionalization – the dehumanization, the flexible justifications, etc – are preserved.

A common way to write in this setting is to start with a character with a need they aren't satisfying on their own, and then throw them into the waiting vines of an affini who will satisfy that need regardless of the ward's consent in that process, using basically any means necessary. The need itself is dealers choice. What actually determines if someone gets domesticated/institutionalized is Vibes.

So circling back to the character who lacks the courage to volunteer – it's implied in this situation that the character wants and/or needs to be a floret, and they're being held back by something about themselves that isn't in their power to change on their own. This is actually very fertile soil for a story about an affini treating this like an unmet need and forcing it onto the character. The Compact wouldn't wait for them to volunteer.

Societal Domestication

The Affini Compact dosn't only domesticate the individual sophonts they take as florets. The earliest story I've read that pokes at this is Nurture and Acquisitions, which differentiates between little-d "domestication" (taking individual sophonts as pets) and big-D "Domestication" (the Compact's larger political philosophy, and the Domestication the Human Domestication Treaty is concerned with). Even if Independents aren't owned, they're still Domesticated in the broader sense.

Independents are sometimes described as barn cats on the community server. I took a crack at describing large-scale Domestication in Love Doesn't Ask for Permission (The story isn't about it, it just comes up in conversation), and I described it in Calyx's voice through a comparison to feral cats in Istanbul. The city has a sizeable population of street cats, which the community feels some collective duty of care toward despite them not being owned. They started out as something closer to barn cats, subsisting on pests like mice and generally caring for themselves. Now, though, it's common for residents to be friendly toward street cats on their street, and the city even puts up little cat houses and vending machines for them. These street cats are at least on some level dependent on the humans living alongside them, and while they aren't as docile as house cats, they are notably more docile and friendly than most feral cats.

Similarly, independents are generally allowed to go about their lives without a collar, but their lives are very different than mine or yours (directed vaguley at "reader"). They're docile around affini and receptive to head pats. They may accept food from affini, or accept invitations to couch surf in an affini's hab. Their basic needs are taken care of.

Independents are actually even more domesticated than Istanbul's street cats in some ways. The Compact has a truly massive surveillance (sometimes jokingly called the "plamptopticon") watching everyone, affini very much included. If a sophont's needs aren't being met, someone will know. It follows, then, that any independents you see in stories are either 1) doing great or 2) not going to stay independent long. (Or, spicy option 3) both!)

The Inherent Eroticism of Living on Thin Ice

Stories sometimes explore what independence under the Compact would look like.

Independence is Easy, David the Independent Terran, Independent Establishment, How a Floret Finds Out, and the oneshot I just posted Not Alone have characters who are (or least start off as, or think that they're) independent during or in the first few years after the Human Domestication Campaign.

She Wants You, Freedom's Ember, and Taming the Wolf have similar characters several decades after the campaign, after human society has been very noticeably changed by large scale Domestication.

I tried to give a pretty broad sample, but there are some common themes in stories like these:

Independents immediately post-campaign are well adjusted and their needs are being met.

Independents decades or centuries after the campaign are ironically fairly dependent, just on the affini broadly instead of an owner specifically. From our perspective as readers, they're actually pretty cooked.

Independence isn't something that's decided once. Much like the condition of not being disabled, you're independent until you aren't.

You are always on thin ice.

Looping the disability allegory back in, an independent could be domesticated at any time. Maybe something happened in their life that's compromised their ability to manage some or all of their needs. Maybe the affini think they would just be happier as a floret. Or maybe an affini just wants you.

"Danger to yourself or others" isn't a hard rule, it's a vibe. Affini barely need an excuse to take someone as a floret. If you can conceive of a reason an independent would be better off as a floret, it's pretty likely they aren't going to stay independent for long.

Independents are a Narrative Device

I think it's useful in conversations like these to step back and remember that HDG is a setting for kinky erotica. It isn't a real thing that exists, and a lot of its characteristics are the way they are to facilitate that erotica.

Independence within an HDG context is a trope intended to contrast florethood, and to enable the telling certain kinds of stories.

IIRC, the very early setting didn't even have independents – it was kind of assumed that any humans in the compact were florets or about to become florets. Independents came about as the writing community grew and the setting expanded to facilitate more kinds of stories and more perspectives on the Affini Compact's Great Work.

Independence within the Compact is a way of recontextualizing the setting's Institutionalization Allegory by making space for protagonists who already live in the compact and are compliant with it. Feralists/Rebels are engaged in militarized insurrection against the compact, and their domestication often has elements of pacification or deradicalization ("radicalization" as affini would define it ofc), whereas independents are just normies. The domestication of an independent ends up being much louder about the allegorical subtext at play. When an independent is domesticated, it's for reasons that are nearly-to-indistinguishably similar to reasons someone IRL would be institutionalized.

A feralist is avoiding domestication in a way that, in the setting's logic, only has one possible conclusion. Because an independent is compliant, their existence also makes it possible to examine the ways in which avoiding the collar can be a long term situation. Independents live with the knowledge that their independence is a fragile state that has to be maintained.

(I think a story I linked earlier, HAFFO, is especially good at illustrating this kind of headspace.)

Independents also make very good foils to floret characters, and vice versa. Whatever qualities a floret has or had that led to their domestication can have their opposites demonstrated in a character who, due to those opposite characters, avoided the collar and got off with the comparatively much lighter touch of societal domestication. (I won't spoil it with specifics, but there's an incredible moment in Dog of War that does exactly this.)

If I can't make the choice to be a floret, am I left abandoned?

The short answer is "no." The long answer is that this question is itself the kind of interesting situation that independents are used as a narrative device to explore. They offer new angles on what it means not to fall through the cracks and what it's like to live with the Sword of Damocles (hot, kinky) of domestication hanging over your head.

Veris Hedera, Eighteenth Bloom has just recently found herself on board a Terran ship along with an absolutely adorable little human. Veris knows that she and Nelson are made for each other, and she's prepared to make sure that Nelson knows it too.

Ooh, this was a delightful surprise! Very reminiscent of John Terra's Last Stand in terms of structure and function, I simply adore this kind of progressive mindfuckery, and Saranthos executes on it beautifully. A genuinely really pleasant surprise on my end; what a lovely story by an author I'm not familiar with!

Even if she’s been officially labeled a human pet, she knows that the fires of rage will help her keep away the buzzing in the back of her head just like they always have. Her captor, Malle Arboria, insists that she’s already been implanted, but clearly nothing about her behavior has changed! As long as Misha feels hatred within herself, she’s still her, no matter what happens. She just needs to focus. Even if it’s hard. Harder than it used to be. This is a story about ADHD, breaking a conflict addiction, age regression, kissing a giant spider, and focusing on the things that make you happy instead of those that make you angry.

So did y'all know that conflict can be addictive? I do. It fucking sucks, to have this constant urge to start fights and get into drama because my ADHD brain seeks stimulation. I've had to re-edit this post twice to cut out some very unproductive spite. There's a reason I don't hang out on most social media platforms; I get angry and it stops being fun, and I can't stop myself from being angry.

At the moment, there are two chapters of this out, and it's absolutely peak. Like, I've been let in on a bit of a spoiler of what actually happened to Misha, and uh... Holy shit. I would do domesticatable things for that treatment. Look, if all else fails, remember: it's fucking Lagnia and Sheepwave. I shouldn't have to explain to you that this is going to be fucking incredible. I just shouldn't. You either already know, or you should be reading some of their works right now instead of this list!

Saturn Oleifera, recent volunteer floret cuddles up one late eve with her tablet, a small trove of junk food, and the nagging feeling of something out of place. She is very, truly happy, as she waits for her Owner, Moringa Oleifera to return home from petsitting. So why do they feel so empty?

Oh, okay, we get another Lagnia collab, this time with violet_moonvine, whose previous work, Love Doesn't Ask For Permission, hit me like a metric ton of bricks and holds up as one of the hottest class-C stories in the entire setting. And it's peak. Holy shit. An affini and their floret realizing that their current easygoing dynamic just isn't quite working for either of them, and a. Correction. It is absolutely peak; a story told from both perspectives, and both are incredibly fun and hot.

Wow, it's wild how many amazing authors showed up for this. Who really care about asexuality in HDG, and asexual representation in general. Anyways, moving on:

In 2554, humanity was conquered and domesticated by the Affini Compact. That was generations ago to Luna, a dominant human wolfgirl who doesn’t like being indoors. She wants to be a floret, but her personality makes her very… particular. So she hops onto a random ship on its way to the next campaign, hoping to be courted by an owner along the way. Sorias is an Affini ecology engineer with a body also styled like a canine predator, a love of bringing out the best in nature with careful cultivation, and the heart of a romantic under the grassy fur. This is a story of contradictions. About becoming a loyal pet without giving up dominance, and about finding a forever home while still being free to roam.

Oh hey, another sheepwave collab! And it's so goddamn good holy shit. I have known Luna for all of three chapters, and if anything happened to her I'd kill et cetera et cetera et cetera.

So it's not just that Slylittleprincess and sheepwave are two of the most talented authors in the entire space, it's that this specific collaboration brought us From Pawn To Princess, and it's looking like that same level of magic and whimsy is given to us here. I just love this stupid wolfgirl! She really is lowercase-d "domesticated" to the point that she can't imagine that anything is actually dangerous because she's grown up her whole life in the compact, and if it was dangerous, the affini wouldn't allow it. She's not afraid of being capital-D Domesticated either; her only fear is that she ends up courted by an affini who doesn't take romance seriously and just snatches her up. Well, that, and also any form of rejection whatsoever.

It's frustrating the degree to which Sheepwave writes these incredibly specific, relatable characters. I've been waiting for some shoe to drop on this before giving it its own post, but... c'mon. Sheepwave and SlyLittlePrincess. An affini who looks like a cross between a werewolf, Roadhog, and Father Christmas. Tali being Tali. A hot fuzzy wolfgirl. And I shouldn't have to tell you by now - Sheepwave makes some pretty incredible art.

(This seems as good a time as any to state that I consider @sheepwavehdg to be one of the most unambiguously positive creative voices in the HDG community.)

This isn't everything; it's just a smattering of highlights. There are new fics by Belenen and Victorinya as well, which I didn't get to because this post is already going long. The point is, this writing jam is full of incredibly good stories and really talented authors, and I'm excited to see what else comes out of it. There's even a new Cadence file, which, while not yet officially part of the jam, would be an excellent fit for it.

Anyways, I've been pretty busy and not as active on this blog as I might otherwise be, but it's good to be back to reminding everyone why HDG and the community built around it is awesome.

I just wanted to post this little rant, because it really annoys me when people misinterpret this specific axiom to criticize HDG.

The whole axiom of “The Affini Always Win” isn’t trying to say “The Affini would literally win any conflict you could possibly imagine”. It’s not trying to be an ultimate power scaling win button like some people seem to think. That idea is fucking stupid. The reality of fiction is that you can always come up with something capable of beating another fictional creation. So of fucking course you can come up with an empire capable of beating the Affini. That’s not the point! Don’t say it’s the point!!!

The ACTUAL reason Affini don’t lose is because it goes against the structure of the setting itself. Ultimately, HDG is a story about giving up control to a force you can’t fight against. It’s about being given care and unconditional love thats literally impossible to run away from. If you’re constantly writing stories about how the Affini totally got their asses kicked, well that’s kinda gonna diminish the core aspect of the setting. So, it’s mutually agreed that writing those kinds of stories is a bad idea.

If you want to write your epic story about how John Terra totally kicked the Affini’s collective asses, that’s totally chill! Just write an original story instead of an HDG one. And if the idea of HDG having this axiom pisses you off so much you feel the need to post on about it, even though you don’t really care about the setting, maybe consider finding something else to do with your time.

"Ah, I appreciate it, really I do! But I can't... mother will be worried, I promised to help her bake, and-"

"But petal, it's cold outside-"

"And what of father? He expects me-"

"The fire is so much nicer, don't you think?"

"I really should get going though..."

"There is no need to hurry so, they will all still be there later."

"Oh fine... I suppose I could stay for half a drink more."

Her vines relaxed, as Noelle let herself be led back to the couch. Friga handed her another glass, already adjusting the Terran back into her lap. The woman giggled, as she snuggled up against her friend... Miss Foris was so thoughtful.

"Oh, what the neighbors must think? They'd probably assume I'm your floret!- Say... what's in this drink, anyways?"

"Don't worry about it, petal~"

If you have supposedly have a device to construct things out of atoms as a consumer product then how does currency work in the Affini's system? Are there systems to detect counterfeit money or is everything like a cryptocurrency or something? Even if you tried making it impossible to create fiat money there will always be Communists looking to ruin everything by hacking devices against the wishes of its designers. Surely you aren't just letting people pirate money?

I... hmm! I'm actually not sure what a lot of these terms actually mean. Let me just make a note of these. "Consumer product"... "counterfeit"... "money..." "cryptocurrency" - that sounds like a real word, but it sounds like it means "currency that doesn't know it's currency"? How very odd.

And I'm not exactly sure what "pirate" is, as a verb. Did you mean steal, petal? Like how some birds will take things to make their nests with? (It's so precious, isn't it? They just love the shiniest most beautiful strings!) I'm not sure what stealing would even mean for a sophont, you know.
