 zayn has said that the band made him ill, that he literally had an eating disorder, that it was negatively impacting his emotional and mental health, that he was tired of not having control over his career or creative output, and that he left for his happiness and health. 

he said all this from the perspective of someone whose music taste was most different to the music 1d was putting out, someone who was deliberately marketed as a dark horse and mysterious and dark and dangerous, someone who was and is routinely the victim of islamophobic and racist comments, someone who personally disliked the reality of the band he was working in (the band managed by the same people fans on here like to criticize day in and out), someone who personally struggled with the environment he was in. he said all this while speaking out multiple times about how he was grateful for the band for the opportunities they gave him, proud of all the achievements one direction had, saying in his book (the same book that people on here said would be a ‘tell-all’ giving away all the secrets of his bandmates because thats how low they think of him): ‘one direction was an incredible experience in its own right, and its a part of me, an integral part of my history, and im never going to deny that aspect of my life’. this is in addition to the positive things he’s said in interviews such as with elvis duran where he says anything he said that sounded ungrateful came from him having problems with himself, or with zane lowe last year

zayn stans have been very, very vocal about this for years because people routinely use his comments about 1d’s music against him and to justify their fucked up behaviour towards him, because him talking about his own personal taste and wanting to do something he finds authentic is apparently a crime, even though they reward this in other people. they do this while flat-out ignoring the other things he’s said. the clear conclusion to draw here is that these people value the fantasy of 1d as a band more than they ever do about zayn as an individual, as someone who has opened up about his health and emotions when leaving the band. they’d rather write him off as ungrateful and selfish than actually listen to what he says, and they’d rather act like him saying he didnt like 1d’s pop sound is evil a reflection of his evil ungrateful character than accept that democracy in a creative environment is hard and not everyone will be happy. you can feel personally hurt that zayn didnt like the music he produced in the band, but there comes a point where you need to push aside your own feelings AS A CONSUMER and respect the feelings of one of the people PRODUCING this products for you. you cant demand 1d give you an unlimited service of happiness at all times when these are real people with real human emotions, not fountains of endless joy.

overall, seeing people compare harry’s comments on the band to zayn’s in a way that routinely serve to prop harry up as ‘better’ than zayn because he enjoyed the band, is fundamentally ignoring a) the fact zayn didnt have the same experience in the band that harry did and b) the fact that zayn has said very, very similar things about his general time in the band that these same people overlook and ignore.
