love this show so much. look how carl canāt take his eyes off pete <3
@ pete doherty @ carl barat
Carl Barat on first time he met Peter Doherty
Interviewer: How did you meet Pete Doherty?
Carl Barat: I went to Brunel (University, west London) to study acting. University disappointed me: I was expecting to find people with a passion to learn and who cared about their subjects. And I just found a bunch of idiots who wanted to race and were in to golf. It was heartbreaking. There was no one there who seemed to give a shit about
being alive. It did my nut in really. But there was one girl (Amy-Jo Doherty) who saved me from all that. She stayed in the same residence block as me, that was Peteās sister. He was a year younger, he was still in their hometown, in Nuneaton near Coventry. But he was really in to coming to London. Sheād go home for family things and tell him little stories about how great I was. She thought we were quite like-minded.
Interviewer: Can you remember the first time you met him?
Carl Barat: It was in the residence block. He was in London for the weekend. There was an audition for the theatre society or something, and Ā I was really rubbish. And he got up and auditioned and got the part! He Ā told them after he wasnāt a student and they were really pissed off.
Interviewer: What was your first impression?
Carl Barat: I couldnāt believe this kid had got one over on me! He was intelligent and witty. I felt I had competition, for once. Somebody I could spark off. We just clicked. Then he moved to London and kept hassling me to write songs with him. I didnāt have any confidence really, and he had no talent for guitar, he was completely out of tune, but he had all the confidence in the world. It really inspired me.
Interviewer: Was your and Peteās relationship combative from the start?
Carl Barat: Yeah, absolutely. In silly ways, like getting to the top of the staircase first. I suppose itās partly because weāre so alike. Did that make the songs better? I guess so, yeah. Youāve got to bounce off someone to work with them, havenāt you? Otherwise youād just do your own Ā thing. It was always quite affable, really, and amicable.
