there's 200 of y'all following this blog already, which means it's time for my favorite blog tradition of a 200 word ficlet for 200 followers. thank you to @smile-at-the-stars for allowing me to steal the idea of a cat on the vat :))))
letting y'all know now that this might grow into a longer fic just for the fun of it, the idea is taking root in my head
There was a cat on her ship.
The little black cat ran across her path, making her stop so suddenly that Grace bumped into her, wives’ tales about black cats crossing paths suddenly racing through her mind.
“What?” he said, confused.
Like it was summoned, the creature rounded the corner, trotting up to them happily.
They both stared at the cat as it wound through Stratt’s legs — looked up at each other, Stratt in shock, Grace in embarrassment.
“You’re not supposed to know about this.”
“I’m not?” She bent and picked up the cat, scratching behind its ears as it purred, stretching into her touch.
Grace stared at her, obviously surprised. “We thought you’d be mad.”
She gave him a bland smile, then said sharply, “Why would I be mad about a cat around dangerous material?”
He cringed. “We keep her confined to the housing section.”
Her eyebrows rose. “We? Everyone knows?”
He nodded. “There’s a group chat. Ah…” he cleared his throat. “Stratt’s Vat’s Cat…” He gave her a weak smile, then offered, “Her name is Astro?”
“If that’s short for astrophage—”
His deepening blush told her everything.
