My father’s name is Richard Lewis Irving.

He has fought no wars, yet he was enlisted in the U.S. Army for several years before I was born. He keeps his hair in that typical, clean shave, specks of strands freshly peeking from his scalp like a patchy lawn in spring. After nineteen years of raising my sister, my own childhood smushed inside those, he no longer keeps his body ready for overseas foreign massacres. Instead, he indulges in the occasional cheeseburger, slurps martinis on the back porch, (a wicker chair facing the Rockies, his most admirable location), and spends most of his time reading business books with white men on the cover looking stern and successful. He is not a fearful man, he does not incite terror nor experience it. Rather, he is a quiet Idaho Republican. He votes in silence, he listens to Fox News radio alone in his Jeep, he nods his head at political paraphernalia that aligns with what his father believed, what his father’s father believed, and what his father’s father’s father believed. He dismisses any young individual with color in their hair. He fishes in the appropriate seasons, hunts in the same way, used to drink beer when he was younger, and switched to classier alcohol when he switched to classier women.

I’m glad my father never fought in any wars. He is a simple man, he is made in the mold that all Irving men are made in, and after a while, the imitation becomes so far removed from its source, that there is simply nothing particularly strong about it. He has no strong opinions, no political hill to die on, and no favorite color to purchase tee shirts in. He is the printer's equivalent of running low on ink once you get to the fifteenth copy.

I say none of this in a way that might demean him. There is nothing wrong with being plain.

Wrinkles in the world, these mountains, large Godly hands cupping the thin strip of our hometown like hands around a cigarette, I gaze slack jawed and mindless, let their enormity crush and rumble the tectonic plates of my brain to form ranges and valleys, peaks and high altitude lakes.

Hi, thanks for the ask!

The protagonist and narrator is named Richard Irving. He's from Some Small Town in Idaho (close to where I grew up, but I'm thinking of pulling a Grasshopper Jungle and just inventing a fake town to avoid...yk)

He keeps his hair short, doesn't really like anything flashy. He's sort of boring at first glance, but that's what makes him interesting to me.

His father is also named Richard, as is his grandfather. He unfortunately suffers from Dead Mom Syndrome, but I put a spin on it that I find subversive.

Then there is James Thatcher. James is a wildcard. He isn't from Idaho, but his mom owns a second home there. This is common where I live.

James is a mountain climber/rock climber/he boulders, whatever you want to call it. He goes on extensive backpacking trips and has done so across the world. He's a city boy at heart and a total Outdoorsy LARP.

They're both trying to kill each other, eat each other alive, and fuck Brokeback mountain style.

The book is obviously more complex than this. However, what I tend to post (the excerpts) are from Richard's point of view.

hiii zooey, i love your longer work! are you more of a garden writer or a construction worker writer? when you write long stuff?

What I currently call The Stanley Project (I have yet to identify a proper title) has been written spontaneously over the last four years. I go into nature and free-write in my notebook, and then pour over the information to infuse the narrative with my observations.

I don't write out an entire detailed "construction" plan. Instead, I prefer to just start. I have various endings for the story in mind, but I will know which one is right when I get there.
