Wild nods sagely, pulling at the hem of the tunic to look at it. “I like green, but I’ve been surrounded by blue for a while. I’ve grown attached to the color.”

He’s not quite sure why Ruto dislikes the green tunic so much, but he can respect people’s likes and dislikes, so he carefully folds the clothes and tucks them back into the drawer he pulled them from. He spots the zora armor as he does, and pulls it out to show Ruto.

He holds it for a moment, and his eyes soften.

It’s a shocking shade of red, a very specific tone that he asked Sayge for help dyeing. He sets it down on the table in front of her to free his hands.

“It’s… not blue,” he admits, “but this is- this is the zora armor that I received from a very dear friend.”

“ blue’s a very good color. you can’t get much better than it, really. ”   she says it confidently and with a tone brokering no argument. she isn’t just saying it because she’s blue, though. oh, it’s a big part of it, but it’s not the only reason. the ocean and all the water was blue. it was the color of life, healing and wisdom. how could you possibly entertain a color better than that?

she peers over the tunic, mouth parting in some surprise and slight jealousy, but mostly approval.  “ ooooh. they’ve made it much prettier from the ones we had ... ! ”  if only her link had had a tunic like this! she would have approved much more than the plain tunic he'd always been wearing. poor boy. those forest clothes hadn’t been flattering on anyone.  “ a very dear friend, hm? ”  ruto’s eyes sparkled, a smile curling across her lips as she leaned back and pinned link with a prying stare.  “ what’s their name? ”

      THE  CURRENT  SITUATION  IS  —  confusing  at  best .  when  they’d  unearthed  the  divine  beast  they’d  never  expected  such  power  within  it  let  alone  an  actual  person .  as  champion  mipha  has  considered  herself  responsible  for  the  girl  they’d  awoken .  after  all ,  she  is  of  the  zora  …  at  least  she  thinks  so .  

      ❛    YES ,  I  AM .    ❜  she  replies ,  slight  confusion  in  her  gaze .  the  question  itself  is  odd  in  itself .  ‘new  princess’  she’s  been  princess  for  nearly  a  hundred  years .  could  it  be  possible  that  this  woman  was  older  than  that ?  that  the  beast  had  preserved  her  for  so  long ?  ❛    —  though  i  will  admit  i  don’t  quite  understand  what  you  mean  by  new  princess .  are  you  familiar  with  some  of  my  predecessors ?    ❜

the smile on ruto’s face grows, infinitely pleased with the answer.  “ good. ”   she says approvingly, and walks around ruta with familiarity, pausing only when mipha speaks again. ruto’s eyes flicker up, interest caught, and a smirk curls across her lips, slow and deliberate.   “ oh, you could say that ... ”   ruto’s eyes narrow, something mischievous dancing in them as she gives a secretive, knowing smile, as if to say, i know something you don’t.

moving again, she circles the younger princess before taking a seat on one of ruta’s benches and rests her chin in the very edge of the palm of her hand, fingers curled inward.  “ tell me, how much do you know about your predecessors, hmm? remind me. what are their names, exactly? ”

    “Ganondorf? I’ve heard of Ganon, but…” Now this was getting to be a bit of a concern. This Zora girl, Ruto, she spoke as if the war against Ganon was still going on. Sure, he knew it took a long time, word was easily going to be hard to spread around the vast lands of Hyrule, but… For some reason, he had the feeling that really wasn’t it. Come to think of it, none of the Zora Revali met looked a single thing like her. There were bound to be differences, but it seemed strange.

    Hopefully her joke was just that; a joke.

    “Wait, what do you mean? Link never did that, he hardly left his post as Her Highness’s knight until Ganon defeated us, and hasn’t again since he turned things around.” This was just getting weirder and weirder, wasn’t it? Talk of war still going on, another Ganon (or maybe the same one, he didn’t know), a strikingly different land than what he’s known…Just what happened to cause this? 

    Where - or when - was he now?

ruto raises her brows. “ ganon? that was his true form, yes ... but most regular people refer to him as ganondorf. the dark lord? demon king? of the gerudos? ruled for seven years after seizing the triforce? ”   she really wasn’t about to retell the whole story, was she? she wasn’t, not even if he asked. living through it once was more than enough, she wasn’t about to talk about it. he could go grab a bard or ask someone else if he wanted to find out so bad. 

but he just kept getting everything so wrong! with how hyrule had been in such a tizzy following link’s heroics, how the legends of him had been spun and sung and passed all through the kingdom for years, how could someone get everything so wrong? ruto let out an aggravated, drawn out groan of a sigh.  “ he may have been the hero of time, but he was never any knight. he never even met the Queen before all of this started. ”  as if they’d ever let a boy from the forest become a knight of hyrule, anyhow. ruto crosses her arms.  “ besides, he's not anything anymore. not here. ”  she says it simply, but the moue of her mouth is unhappy. she tries not to let it show, but the loss of him hurts. she knows now they were never anything more than passing acquaintances, but she’d respected link. liked him, even, as friends do. and she never got the chance to really thank him for all he’d done for her people.

A rare free day, and Malon’s out fishing.  She is, however, clearly better at pretty much everything else, because the moment she hooks one, she panics and starts swinging, sending the fish flying into a Zora who’d been swimming down the river.

ruto flails back inelegantly, eyes shut and nose scrunched as the fish slowly slides off her face and into the water in front of her. a moment passes before heat rises to her cheeks.  “ watch where you swing that thing! ”  she yells heatedly, and swiftly swims her way over to where the ranch girl is standing. honestly, hylians. couldn’t they figure out how to do something so simple?   “ you could’ve blinded me! ”

“ i’m jealous. father never let me fight. ”  she sighs. to be fair, there had never really been much need to, and even then when she was young she hadn’t wanted to, either. but she’d learned once the dark king rose to power. oh, she’d learned. they all had, out of necessity. her eyes are eventually drawn to the spear in the other princess’s hand.  “ are you any good with it? ”   she asks, nodding at the weapon, and raises her eyes to meet mipha’s own. she’s smirking, brows raised in challenge and curiosity.  // @serencgrace (♥)’d for a starter!

Unpopular opinion but i absolutely adore princess ruto and you cant change my mind on that

Like i know a lot of people think she was bratty and selfish and rude in the game, or annoying because you had to carry her around, but 1. She was a literal child 2. None of her actions were selfish. The only reason she was in jabu jabus belly was because he swallowed her after she noticed he was sick and acting oddly. She mentions that she’s been inside his belly multiple times and could handle herself and knew where to go. Princess Ruto was very capable in that, not stupid or overconfident or bratty.

She runs off when Link tries to get her to leave, but because she refuses to leave without the zoras sapphire, a valuable relic to not just her and her mother but her people, and to see what is bothering jabu jabu. I know this move pissed a lot of people off but let’s think about it. If Princess Ruto had been Link, this action would have been widely accepted and not made a big deal of. Because its expected of him, he’s the type not to leave when something is wrong, he wants to help and bring peace. He was also a headstrong and stubborn child. As was Ruto - headstrobg and stubborn but also knowledgeable in where she was and the zoras sapphire and ALSO wanting to help lord jabu jabu, who was very important to her people.

She refused to leave until she gained back what was lost, and wasn’t going to wait for Link to decide whether he would follow or let her or not. Herr entire dialogue never focuses around herself – whenever she uses the word ‘I’ or 'me’, its always in relation to someone else. How she feeds Lord Jabu Jabu and was concerned of his odd behavior, how she lost something important that belonged to her mother. Etc.

In the Water Temple when we meet her again she also mentions her father and her people. She wasn’t in the Water Temple because she was lost or had accidentally wandered in there. She entered purposefully to try and save her family and her people. She accepts her role as a sage without question when she could have been as bratty or morose as she liked. It isnt a fun or happy situation. But she accepts it and is honored to help Hyrule and her domain. Princess Ruto was selfless and courageous and thinking of others before herself and it showed in her dialogue AND her actions. In this essay I will –

Ruto’s teasing flies over his head and he glances up, nodding to himself. The Zora he knows are tall, so it makes sense to him that Ruto would be too.

That being said, the point about the green tunic piques his interest.

“Green tunic?” Link signs, scrambling through his storage to pull out the tunic of the wild. “This? I like to wear it sometimes but it feels…” He pauses, balling his fist up to think. “Sacred. It doesn’t always feel right to wear.”

it takes her a moment to remember hylian sign language -- she never has much use for it in her daily life, looking after the water temple as she was -- and she’s inwardly relieved to find not much has changed, thankfully.   “ sacred? ”   ruto lets out a tinkling laugh.   “ goddesses help you if it was! could you imagine, being forced to wear that thing? no. ”  she shakes her head.  “ seeing that ugly thing once was more than enough times. believe me when i say, blue is a much better color. ”  she paused, thinking for a moment.  “ speaking of ... do you have a zora tunic? ”

    “I am many, many things, but I a liar I am not.” Revali answers, feathers only growing more ruffled with every word. Though…Something about the one she described gave him the oddest sense of deja vu. That almost sounded like Link, had she mentioned a blue tunic rather than green. Oh well, there was no point in wondering about that now; nothing was making a single scrap of sense right now. This Zora girl was not helping that case…but no one else was around. Maybe he needed to step back for a moment, he did say he was going to try to be better about that…

    “Okay, fine, I’ll relent on that for now.” he sighs again, a wing raising to pinch the bridge of his beak. “Do you mind if I at least see why Hyrule looks so different than it did yesterday, Princess Ruto?”

“ could have fooled me. ”  she comments idly, inspecting her nails. and so much different from yesterday? ruto makes a face at that before sighing and deciding to graciously indulge the bird.  “ well, a war will do that to land. ganondorf was all about that razing the ground. ”   or freezing the water, in the zoras case. the memory of her people and her poor father encased in ice still raised her hackles. ooooh, if she could only imprison ganondorf once more ... just one more go at him to really get even.

“ i’d hardly say it was yesterday, though. all that’s been over for a few years now. ”  had this bird and his people really been so isolated from the world they hadn’t known about the seven year war? there was no way a tribe went unnoticed for that long, especially under the dark king’s reign.   “ don’t tell me you’ve somehow traveled through time from the past, too?  ”  ruto jokes, and looks infinitely amused at the thought.  “ if that’s the case, tell link to come and visit sometime. oh, and that he needs to pay me back for my mother’s sapphire seeing how i can no longer get it back. ”  not that she’d have any need for it anymore, anyway. marriage was no longer part of her future.

“ it’s been a while since you’ve visited. ”  she points it out bluntly and unapologetically, resting her chin in the palm of her hand.  “ what, too good to visit me anymore? don’t tell me you’ve forgotten about me? ”   she asks pointedly, but there’s a glint in her eyes that reveal the playfulness of her words.   // @boy-from-the-forest​ (♥)’d for a starter!

    “Princess? What are you talking about? That’s Mipha. Anyway, you’re certainly not Vah Ruto; I don’t see a single piece of metal on you, nor a single water spout.” What in Calamity’s name was going on here? Feathers ruffled a bit more; this was Hyrule…but it looked different. So very, very different from the Hyrule he’d come to know. Why was that? A frustrated sigh escapes the champion’s beak, shaking his head. “Obviously not! I am Revali, Champion of the Rito as appointed by Her Highness Princess Zelda.”

“ mipha? ”  ruto looks even more offended now. so some zora girl was off using her title, was she? to impersonate her princess in such a way, and make ruto out to be an imposter ... !   “ i have never heard of a mipha. whoever this girl is, she’s been fooling you. and i, for one, hold no sympathy for fools. ”   unless her father had given up the throne for some insane reason, there would be no princess taking the place she had given up.   “ princess zelda? she appointed you. as ... champion. of the rito. ”  ruto stayed silent, staring the bird down --- and then threw her head back with a great big laugh.    “ HAH! i have to say, you’re funny, even if you aren’t that bright. princess zelda. ”  ruto smirked and crossed her arms.  “ maybe if you were seven years earlier, blond, and wore a green tunic, sure. you’re none of those things. just a liar. a bad one at that. ”
