today i’m sad about that one line from the creator’s commetary about how zuko is a tsungi horn prodigy and the little letter zuko, aged 7, sends iroh in “legacy of the fire nation” where he very politely requests that iroh come home and teach him pai sho tricks, because that casts such a different light on their interactions in book one.  it was never iroh trying to push his own favorite things - pai sho and music night - on an uninterested zuko, it was iroh desperately trying to reconnect with zuko by recreating the activities he knows zuko used to enjoy.  zuko, aged 7, once begged iroh to come home and play board games with him and now zuko wants nothing to do with him and you know that eats iroh up alive

book 1 zuko had the moral backbone of a chocolate eclair he was literally doing mental gymnastics to justify himself. one minute he rammed his ship into a town, then he beat the shit out of zhao and said shit like, “if my father thinks that then he’s a fool.” and then he did shit like FULLY violate his banishment and go “teehee father will forgive me <3″ and then do shit like full on treachery to be the blue spirit. and he’d come back and say he loved the fire nation so much he’d do anything. and then he got blown up. literally most entertaining person to watch because he was a WRECK.

I don’t know how many of y’all need to hear this but Aang absolutely had a deep understanding of his own culture and to suggest he didn’t is to ignore the PHYSICAL evidence upon his skin that he had to earn in order to have. It wasn’t an accident on the writers part that Aang was a master and had the tattoos to prove it. One of the most important elements to the show and to Aang’s arc is how well he understood his culture and just how deeply he loved it.

On the note of his arc, even if he wasn’t the only one left of his people it was essential that Aang find an alternative to killing Ozai because it was essential that Aang realize he’s capable of being the Avatar and an Air Nomad without compromising either part of himself.

That was his arc. That was the point. That was why he ran away to begin with.

Trans Zuko is so funny to me. I’m not saying this to try and make fun of people who headcanon him as trans - trans headcanons are great and I support them. It’s just wild because it implies Ozai was out here like:

Possible explanations I just pulled out of my arse:

Being trans is very normalised in the Fire Nation and misgendering is considered dishonourable and makes you Look Really Bad.

Zuko’s transition was convenient because Ozai wanted a male heir.

Zuko went to the Mother of Faces or whatever the spirit was called to get a new (male) face and body and part of the magic was that his family would only remember the new him.

Ursa allowed Zuko to transition when he was very young and Ozai just straight up forgot that he used to be a ‘girl’ because he pays no attention to his family.
