Tools and Tricks: In Praise of Crappy Tools
You've just bought that nice, new sketch book and do you know what? It's terrifying! There it is lying in front of you in all of it's alabaster purity like some holy relic. Do you dare defile it with your profane marks?! Maybe that's a little dramatic, but it can be intimidating staring at that expensive piece of white paper. There is a way to overcome that level of intimidation ... but that way is heresy!
Commit thou not Blasphemy!
If what you really want to do is end up with every single drawing that flows from your hand being something your grandmother can hang on her fridge, then don't do what I'm about to suggest. Tools & Tricks: Deconstructing My Children's Book Illustration
Even with limited drawing ability there are simple techniques to improve your illustrations immediately. To demonstrate, I've deconstructed one of my recent paintings, The Flyers. This is a children's book illustration where I wanted to focus on the characters in a light, happy environment. Building Illustrated Characters
Character designs by Jason WrenGeorge Bernard Shaw famously said, "Those who can do, those who can't teach." What a dumb ass! Okay, there may be a hint of truth to the stereotype that individuals who aren’t the most adept in their field will gravitate towards teaching as a career, but Shaw’s attitude completely misses the central notion of teaching.
Focus on Illustration Fundamentals
At it’s core teaching is about filtering out the noise. There is so much contradictory information out there about illustration that a young learner’s head can spin. It’s an instructor’s job to say to a student, “focus here: these are the fundamentals, and these are the materials to build your foundation.” Teaching in and of itself is an art. It’s a rare ability to be able to strip a craft down to it’s essence and clearly communicate the skills needed to reproduce that craft. That’s a capability that requires an intimate knowledge of the subject.

Digital Illustrator Returns to Traditional Media

But when I did arrive, I was all in. “That’s it,” I thought, “I’m a digital artist now.” I put all of my paints and paper into the closet and cozied up to my Wacom tablet. I didn’t have to worry about drying times for my oil paints, and the revisions were quick and easy. It was a brave new world.
Digital Illustrator Seeks Out Old Masters for Inspiration
For the last half decade, 95 percent of everything I’ve created has been digital, but an interesting thing has developed lately. As the technology to create digital pieces mimicking traditional media has improved, so has an interest in traditional media. Digital artists are now seeking out the old masters for inspiration and instruction. I’ve found myself pulling books off the shelf and revisiting artists like Klimt and John Singer Sargent. They seem fresh and alive again. These are old friends that have been trying to reconnect with me for years. I just forgot how much they had to teach me.
