The last scene of the third season was especially bad.
So when Dany said to her brother (who WAS AN ACTUAL RACIST) that he should stop call the Dothraki savages because they were HER people now, it counts for nothing? She identifies with the Dothraki. She is part of the Dothraki people. Should she forget where she comes from to satisfy you?
And you should also remember that those are not the only POC people of the show. Varys, the Braavosi who taught Arya how to use a sword (sorry I forgot his name, must be racism), Daario (don’t you dare tell me he’s white), Xhao from Quarth (I can’t spell it right…), Kraznys and all the Good Masters, all the Great Masters, all the Warlocks, Jaqhen…
I’m probably forgetting some because there are SO MANY characters in that show…
So tell me again how this show doesn’t have POC people.
It is very interesting when the response to this is "No, the character isn't racist!" First of all, I'm not accusing the fictional character of Daenerys of being a racist. Whether the character is or not is up for discussion. I AM, however, pointing out that the portrayal of this character in general can be seen as a pretty obvious "white savior" narrative, which is part of a dominant cultural narrative that has existed for quite sometime. The magical, powerful white person comes and shows all the poor, brown people how to be free, because they either couldn't or wouldn't free themselves. Thanks, magical white person, for helping us out! We'll lift you up on our arms like the magical white savior you are now! Vomit inducing. Anyone who is familiar with the history of white oppression and colonialism knows that some of the key rationalizations of the conquest of numerous groups of people were things like "they are un-civilized, we need to show them what's right!" and "they have slaves, we need to free their slaves!" and "they treat their women poorly, we need to liberate their women!" All of these reasons were used by white colonialists to invade, conquer, and exploit various lands in our actual universe. So, in fiction, when some snow-white princess travels to a foreign land and starts to conquer cities ostensibly to build an army and justifies it by also saying "I'm freeing their slaves!" it is not really too hard to see that as a romanticization of something that actually happened that was/is pretty fucked up. Also, not sure if you know how to read, but the first stipulation is that "the resounding majority" of POC have been portrayed as savages or slaves. I did not say that the show didn't have POC people (in fact the whole premise of the argument is that it DOES have POC people...as dreadlocked "savages" and slaves, for the most part).
