Dune by Frank Herbert is one of my fave sci-fi serials ever. It completely revolutionised me as a reader and an aspiring sci-fi author. I also really enjoy the extended universe additions from his son and Kevin Anderson (unpopular opinion). Most of the covers for this franchise over the years have been godawful. My current read is this hard sci-fi story about beings that are used to assassinate folx & it’s told from the POV of one of those beings (at least that’s what I’ve gathered after reading the first 20 pages, lol). It’s so well written & I’m hecka digging the story. I ordered some Japanese literature after a long time. It felt great to finally add a few more titles to my collection. These are some of my most anticipated books. Keigo Higashino is one of my fave authors. The pink one is a short story collection that I’ve been dying to get my hands on. Hey all. So, I had a total emotional breakdown yesterday. I’m honestly glad it happened because I think it was something I needed. Just to expel all the negative energy I hadn’t realised I was bottling up. For 2020, I’ve set some vital professional intentions for myself. With my getting older and then dealing with the fact that I may not live as long as I’d like, I really want to make some of my long-time dreams come true. Yet, with those desires comes a lot of pressure and my mind and heart finally buckled beneath it all. It felt so cathartic to cry and unload. And, it also gives me a chance to restart feeling freshly rejuvenated. I’m hoping with all of my heart and soul that 2020 will be the year that good things happen and when stuff will start to change for me. I’m going to be working extra hard and hustling to improve my craft and my discipline with the things that matter the most to me, like finishing my writing projects, for example, and screaming about diverse books that I absolutely adore and being more vocal about social issues that I’m passionate about. I know that things won’t be easy and I’ll probably have more moments of emotional vulnerability. But I also know that with each new hurdle I am getting stronger. Getting better armoured and better prepared for the challenges that shall follow after current ones. For me, that’s progress. Even if it can be messy. I think that’s really the most important lesson in life. No matter what’s going on or how chaotic and untidy life can feel, taking it one day and taking it at a pace that feels comfortable and being open to the lessons that arrive with each step is ultimately what moving forward is all about. In 2019, I had the incredible honour of reading a dear friend’s debut novel and it easily became one of the most wonderful stories I have ever read and one of the best books I’ve read this year. It’s a tale of strength and beauty and imagination and was a remarkable reminder of the power of storytelling. Seeing myself in the characters and experiencing my culture through the magically created universe and inspiring fantasy elements and the gloriously scrumptious food was such an emotional experience for me. My end-of-the-year goal is to finish off the Stalking Jack the Ripper YA historical mystery series. So far my favourite instalment is the first one, and while I had mixed feelings about the other two, I have adored the charming (and sometimes heartbreaking) characters, the settings, and the unique take on old-time folx. I’m feeling sad that the journey will be over soon.
