i NEED people to realise foreshadowing is. in fact. a literary device. and not a Bad Thing. the audience picking up on your hints is a Good Thing. because. it makes the story and it’s conclusion make sense. and some people will not see those but enjoy seeing them on a second read through. red herrings are one thing but if your novel consists of nothing but red herrings it’s not a coherent story it’s just a collection of paragraphs that don’t actually plausibly link to one another. you're not fighting with the audience you don’t look clever you look like you don’t know how basic fiction works. be vulnerable for once in your goddamn life and don't treat writing like a game to be won where the audience losing is a good thing.

Actually, beekeepers take many precautions to keep their bees from leaving.

many clip the wings of the queen, destroy new queen cells, cull queens they don't like and use bee pheromones to prevent a hive from naturally swarming or absconding. They also try and prevent mating with the African honey bee, which makes them less docile among other things. During artificial insemination of queens, drones are crushed and „spare“ queens are killed.

and commercial beekeepers even cull their hives during winter, or when they are not producing well.

Coupled with the fact that there is evidence that insects do feel pain, this is not great.

(Not to mention that honeybees are an invasive species in most places, competing with native pollinators and spreading disease)

Because yes, it is true beekeepers will cull queens and destroy queen cells. It's also true they do it SO THE ENTIRE FUCKING HIVE DOESN'T DIE. Bees don't worry about risk management. If they decide to swarm with their new queen two weeks before first frost and they all die, oh well, it was time to swarm. Monitoring queens is a way to avoid this.

Also, yes, a couple of drones may get crushed in handling. Do you know what happens to them, to ALL of them, at the end of summer whether there's a beekeeper or not?

The worker bees forcibly drag them out of the hive and throw them to the ground to die. Because they don't produce anything except sperm, and therefore in winter they're nothing but extra mouths to feed.

As for mating with the African honeybee: yeah, that's happened by now, and the result is hyper-aggressive, highly-territorial bees that can literally track you for miles and remember faces. There's a reason we didn't want this crossbreed to happen. I live in an area with Africanized honeybees. They're dangerous. That isn't the bees' fault, but it would have been better if it didn't happen at all.
