The idea of telltale signs for someone that they ARE about to puke and there’s nothing they can do to stop it are… just so nice to think about. There’s of course the classic “mouth filling up with that weird thick saliva” but I’m talking about whole body sensations too. For someone the signal might be a wave of hot flashes, for someone else it might be sudden cold sweats or chills. It might also be more localized. Maybe their heart starts hammering, or they feel a lump in their throat, or their stomach feels unbearably full out of nowhere. It’s no longer just nausea - it’s their body letting them know that yeah, they are about to puke their guts out.

Heres Some Nausea Whump Tropes Since I've been Gone for The Longest:

Sorry that I haven't been very consistent with posting on here, I've been getting over procrastination so I should be posting way more frequently so you guys will have more content from me, thank you!!

These tropes mostly consist of some of my favorites.

PRE-NAUSEA WHUMP:

✮ When the whumpee has their hand over or near their mouth "just in case".

✮ Going quiet and answering questions with short hums or nods.

✮ Sudden sensitivity to smells and or the smallest or movements.

✮ Sitting very still because, any motion feels risky.

✮ Those nauseous coughs right before actual vomit or gagging comes along.

✮ When the whumpee is asked if they're okay, and they whisper "I'm fine..." a little too quicky (bonus points if they hesitate for a bit before responding to any questions at all).

✮ When the whumpee gets the slow realization: "I think I might throw up."

PRE-VOMIT WHUMP:

✮ The whumpee breathing through their nose like it might help.

✮ Once again, the nauseous coughs.

✮ When the whumpee let's out a series of wet, nauseous burps.

✮ Being asked if they're okay, and instead or answering verbally they just shake their head no, as their eyes remain highly unfocused.

✮ When the whumpee's belly starts to gurgle.

✮ When the whumpee begins to salivate a lot more than what they usually do.

✮ Knees pulled up and or arms wrapped around their stomach.

✮ When the whumpee avoids touching their stomach,nervous it might trigger vomiting.

✮ The whumpee starting to whimper as their stomach muscles start to contract.

✮ Shame or embarrassment hitting before anything else does.

DURING / LOSS OF CONTROL:

✮ Those gagged burps.

✮ The whumpee's stomach muscles contracting with each gag they produce.

✮ The whumpee letting out coughs after each gag.

✮ Gripping their own stomach (someone gripping the whumpee's stomach) to help comfort or aid vomiting.

✮ The whumpee gagging due to feeling small chunks of vomit at the back of the throat.

✮ When the whumpee is getting their back rubbed/patted for comfort.

✮ Tears start to fill their eyes, and their nose starts running due to the force thats being used to push up stomach contents.

✮ When the whumpee's body becomes really shakey.

✮ When the whumpee let's a out shakey breaths during breaks or after every gag.

✮ When the whumpee is scared to stick their fingers down their throat, despite not being able to get anything up at all.

✮ The humiliation the whumpee feels knowing that they can't stop it.

POST-VOMIT WHUMP:

✮ Slumped posture, completely boneless.

✮ Thick saliva dripping from their lips and chin.

✮ Wiping their mouth with th back of their hand or sleeve, simply because they just dint care anymore.

✮ When the whumpee is having trouble walking due to weakness from strain and or overall sickness.

✮ Repeats "I'm okay, I'm okay..." (bonus points if they are most definitely not okay).

✮ Dizzy and wobbly when they try to stand.

✮ The cold sweats afterwards.

✮ Softly and shakily asking for water.

✮ Remaining in front of the toilet not fully sure if they're done puking.

RECOVERY / AFTERCARE WHUMP:

✮ Wrapped in the blanket even if they're still warm or are overheating.

✮ Sitting inches away from a fan due to overheating.

✮ Sipping water almost too carefully, pausing in between with a blank stare at nothing.

✮ Those nauseous, post-vomit hiccups.

✮The whumpee's breath hitching in their throat.

✮ Someone instisting that they rest; the whumpee finally not fighting it (bonus points if they keep on fighting).

✮ Exhaustion crashing down all at once.

✮ Embarrased apologies that don't need to be said.

✮ When the whumpee breaks down and starting starts weakly crying.

✮ Falling asleep mid-sentence.

✮ Feels honest relief of being taken care of, instead of having to continue to hold it all together.

BONUS WHUMP TROPES: EMOTIONAL FACTORS

✮ Most upset about being a "burden" fathering than the fact that they are sick

✮ Trying to clean up afterwards despite barley being able to stand.

✮ The whumpee downplaying their sickness:"It's not that bad." (they say as they're still shakey).

✮ Softly sobbing into the caretaker or whumper's shirt

✮ Realizing how close they were to pushing themselves a little too far.

A short list of lesser talked about reasons for a character to throw up you may have not know about

I’ve been been slowly adding to this since like late 2023 and finally decided to post it, some I’ve given a little summary of, some I think didn’t need one : D

Warnings for both illness and non Illness related reasons to vomit, please take care and skip this list if you are someone who may get worried over finding about new Illnesses or things that may affect health, please look after yourself

Also I am not a doctor, I do not claim to be a medical professional and this list is intended for fictional writing only

Also also these were at least not that known to me, I cannot guarantee these are not as known/ talked about lol

Okay sorry for the long warning, list is under the cut :)

H. pylori infection/ Helicobacter pylori infection

An infection caused by Helicobacter pylori (or known as H. pylori) bacteria that affects the stomach lining and can weaken it. More than half of world’s population has this infection but will have no symptoms or issues with it. Most infections happen in childhood, however a person infected may be asymptomatic for years before developing any problems. A H. pylori infections can cause Gastritis, Peptic Ulcers or in rare cases Gastric Cancer if left untreated. Symptoms happen as a result of Gastritis from the infection and can include symptoms of nausea/vomiting, a burning feeling in the upper stomach, bloating and frequent burping/ gas, indigestion etc. it can be treated with antibiotics and other medications. (I only found out about it through having a friend who would have on and off stomach aches and vomiting for years with no idea why until she was diagnosed with it)

Hypercalcemia/ high levels of calcium in the blood (abdominal moans and groans)

Hypercalcemia can be caused by taking too much calcium and vitamin D supplements, hyperparathyroidism, some cancers, as a side effect from Hydrochlorothiazide or even be temporarily caused by a taking too many tums. ‘Abdominal moans and groans’ refers to the symptoms of Nausea, Vomiting, heartburn and constipation. And while abdominal moans and groans also can be used to describe other illness and conditions I saw Hypercalcemia specifically being called Abdominal moans and groans the most frequently due to it having those symptoms.

Food poisoning caused by old food stuck to a microwave roof falling into the new food that’s being heated up. (Not sure how likely this is to occur however it was written on the official government food health and safety website where I live.)

Magnesium Deficiency

Taking Zinc on an empty stomach 

Green tea being brewed too strong or drinking it on an empty stomach

Motion sickness from video games (cyber sickness or simulation sickness for vr.)

Throwing up from laughing too hard or from the force of bad hiccups (known people to vomit from both) 

A side effect from having an iron transfusion

Post nasal drip Caused by excesses mucus dripping down the throat, the mucus may drip down into the stomach which can irritate the stomach causing nausea/ vomiting.

* Shift work disorder

disorder that can affect people with no traditional working hours that cause a misalignment with circadian rhythm. It can cause nausea and vomiting due to a poorer functioning digestive system from not following the body’s circadian clock when eating, less healthy food choices that could be made with less food available at the time of shirt and stress from being tired.

* Food poisoning specifically from eating food that had contaminated flies land on it

* Motion sickness from swimming in choppy water

* Alternatively catching a stomach bug from swimming in contaminated water with the virus

More common in chlorinated pools, but some websites said it’s possible in ocean water.

* Eating charred food

Charred food can be harder to digest for some people which can lead to nausea and vomiting. (Saw some claims that eating charred toast can settle an upset stomach so could do a scenario with a character that had nothing else available so they try charred toast and end up making their stomach worse.)

* Drinking apple cider vinegar

May cause nausea from other the acidity or some studies believe that it can also slow down digestion (I can throw in a person story of throwing up after drinking one of the Apple cider vinegar, cucumber, and honey drink back in the day)

* EMF sickness/ ‘microwave syndrome’

I debated including this one as it’s not recognised as a medical diagnosis, and it’s more in favour to look for into external factors instead and is based of anecdotal claims. Symptoms are real, but it has no medical diagnosis criteria however evidence supports it as a real syndrome. I decided to include it anyway since it could be used in a fictional scenario!

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity or EHS IS the idea of a sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. There are no specific symptoms however some reports by people who believe they are affected but ehs exposure have listed nausea as a symptom as well as headaches, fatigue, dizziness, heart palpitations and tingling/ redness when exposed to EMF sources (such as mobile phones, computers, microwaves etc)

A wakes with a violent shiver and a gasp as a tepid washcloth meets their forehead. They jerk upright, falling back against the headboard as they do so. Goosebumps rise on their skin as they try to bring the room into focus, but their vision keeps tunneling in and out.

“Sorry,” their friend’s voice cuts through the haze. “We really need to get your fever down.”

B stares into A’s glassy eyes as they shift lazily around the room, not particularly focusing on anything.

“Where am I?” A muttered as if embarrassed they had to ask.

B’s stomach lurches and drops to the floor. “You’re not feeling well. You’re in bed.”

“…Oh.” A’s eyes slip back shut as B darts across the room for the thermometer.

“Don’t go to sleep quite yet,” B whispers as they place the thermometer under A’s tongue and notice for the first time how intensely they’re shaking. Gently, they brush back A’s hair and remove the cloth, dabbing it all over their neck, cheeks and temples. B is trying not to let on their anxiety as they await the reading.

The thermometer trills and flashes angrily, and B curses as they read it. If they can’t get their temperature down, it’ll be a trip to the ER.
