Photoshop 'Minimalist/Cartoonising' Tutorial
Open Photoshop Portable either by right click then Open, and if that doesn't work, then right click and ‘Run as Administrator.’
Now click on File, Open and go to the folder where you have saved your image, select the image and click Open.
Click on the Zoom Icon (the magnifying glass) in the toolbar on the left, and click on 'fit screen' tp fit the picture within your screen. You can also click on + magnifying glass and the - magnifying glass to zoom in and zoom out.
(TIP: For this, it is preferable that you use a MOUSE rather than TOUCH PAD, since this is difficult.) Now click on the ‘Magnetic Lasso Tool’ as marked below OR if you don’t find it, right click on the 3rd icon from the top, and then click on the ‘magnetic lasso tool’.
Now, using this tool, TRACE the outline of your body (TIP: ZOOM IN and do this so that you can get as precise as an outline as possible)
After you’re done tracing the outline, right click, and click on select inverse. Now go to the ‘layers’ section as show below and double click on the layer to change it from ‘Background’ to ‘Layer 0’.(If you've done this already, no need to do it again!)
(If you've made a mistake and you want to unselect the outline, right click and click on ‘deselect and do it again.’)
Now click on delete.
You’ll now have something like this.
Now, here is the MOST tricky part, selecting the individual parts of your face. Start with your hair/scarf, using the same 'Magnetic Lasso Tool'.
Now click on Layer at the top of the screen (in the menu), then New Fill Layer and then Solid Colour. Then Click on OK and choose a 'black colour (hex code: #00000) in the colour options.
Now you'll have this:
Now if you notice, you'll see that your outline is not clean (like if you have some parts sticking out like thorns like this
USE THE ERASER TOOL
to erase it out. To change the size of your eraser, click on the arrow
here and change the size accordingly. Keep the 'hardness' to 100%.
Now, click on the eye here
so that it disappears. You will have this
You will notice that along with the 'thorns' you have some 'cuts' too, like this
Right click on the layer called 'Colour Fill 1' (the only layer with the 'eye'), and click on Rasterize Layer. Now click on this part of the layer
and the right click on it and click on 'Apply Layer Mask'. Now you can go to the 'Brush tool'
making sure the colour selected is black (you can select it here:
and paint slightly over the empty 'cuts'. (TIP: YOU CAN CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE BRUSH IN THE SAME WAY YOU CHANGE THE SIZE OF THE ERASER)
NOTE: This thorns and cuts thingy above is probably the hardest thing to do here, so be very very careful and precise on how you do it. ALSO, it is again recommended that you zoom in. REMEMBER, the 'cartoon image' DOESN'T have to look exactly like the picture. But it does have to look neat, so be careful.
Now make the actual picture appear again (by the same way you made it disappear i.e by click on the 'eye' next to that layer) and now select the face. Do the same thing you did with the scarf that is
click on layer > new fill layer > solid colour > ok > choose WHITE colour.
Then click on 'Normal' dropdown menu right below the LAYERS tab
and select MULTIPLY from the dropdown menu. Now double click on the white box below Normal/Mulitply in the Color Fill 2 Layer, and using the colour picker tool
click on your face for your skin tone (if you don't get a proper colour, play around with the hues to get a proper skin tone. Like I used this colour #ffdfc6 for Mai's face which can used by almost every one who is FAIR/WHITE SKINNED [no racist].) Now go back to the drop down menu and set the 'Multiply' to 'Normal' again.
Again, check if there are any thorns and cuts and erase/paint over them. [Don't forget to rasterize the layer and apply layer mask, like you did with the scarf, before painting]
You'll have THIS now:
NOW, you're done. To save the image, go to File > Save As > Make sure that file format is PSD and if you don't know how to check that, just type down the file name and the put a dot/fullstop and then write psd.(like: MAI.psd) Then click ok. Click OK again.
NOW MAIL THE PSD FILES TO ME BY 8TH OF APRIL OR YOU WON'T BE ON OUR GRADUATION CANVAS!
NOTE: REMEMBER THAT WE'RE WORKING ON 'LAYERS', SO WHEN YOU DO ANY EDITING, IT WILL EDIT ONLY ON THE SELECTED LAYER!
And if you don't understand ANYTHING, mail me at [email protected] OR tweet to me!

Graduation!
Phew, that was tiring. Getting ready for graduation photographs with makeup and everything and then having it postponed is the worst thing ever, don't you agree?
So now, as far as I've heard, the photographs are going to be taken on the 13th of Feb. Be ready guys!
Psssst. Don't forget Valentines Day chocolates for Ms. Shyni. She gave us cookies so we give her chocolates.
How's being a westminsterian?
Amazing. There are so many things you'd see only at Westminster and I wouldn't trade all the experiences I had in this school, good and bad, for anything else.
