Reading the plane scene in the long game was such a gut punch. For those who don't follow figure skating, in January 2025, flight aa5342 crashed with 28 members of the US figure skating team on board. Coaches, parents, and kids who were invited to a special training camp after the national championships. Their plane collided with a blackhawk military helicopter, killing 67 people.

The majority of the skaters on board were members of the figure skating club of Boston, and the world championships were in Boston at TD Garden that march. My mom and I were both there, and there was a beautiful memorial and several dedications by skaters for those who died.

I know Rachel Reid wrote the long game years before the crash, but it was so unexpected when I was reading that it took me right back to last year.

anyway, i know this really doesn't have anything to do with heated rivalry as a whole, but if anyone has a moment, check out the memorials online, especially the exhibition skate by Ilia Malinin, the US figure skater who won.

Several of these kids probably would have gone onto become Olympians and world champions. They deserve to be remembered.

the best fanfiction you've ever read was written by a woman in her 40s before she made dinner for her kids. it was written by a teenager after school when they should've been studying for a history test. and a barista came up with the idea while they cleaned the espresso machine and busser fact-checked it on their break and the post-doc edited between writing grant proposals and the nurse apologized for typos in the notes after a long shift and behind every drabble and one-shot and multi-chapter fic there is a person with a wonderful and interesting and chaotic life and it is such a privilege that we get to be apart of it because they decided to do this thing we all share, for fun.

hulu's paradise is about the sacrifice of love more than it is about anything else. all of these characters are making decisions in the face of insurmountable grief. all of them making decisions to keep someone who's already dead, alive. as much as sinatra built paradise to keep her daughter alive, she sacrificed countless lives along with her morals, all to keep the memory of her son alive, with her. in his final moments, cal sacrificed everything to make sure jeremy (and xavier, lol (gay)) would find out the truth. xavier went on the plane in sacrifice of his wife. the [episode 8 spoiler, killer] did what they did, a horrific act, in the service of the person they loved. and still what they couldn't live with was not the killing but the fact that they got so comfortable in their grief—forgetting the sacrifice of the person they loved that allowed them to survive.

Shout-out to Paradise for making the 'lonely guy obsessed with conspiracy theories and hot girls' actually dangerous and not going down the the trope of "he just needs love to change his ways" because he was proved right about what would happen and that was definitely going to go to his head plus the misogyny wasn't subtle and no one ever called him out he didn't change at all in all those years even with all those people relying on him and I love that in the background you can see two other men developing a healthy friendship that the mailman can't seem to emulated (his friend was also dangerous but they made him obvious)
