so i mayyy be interested in ygo to see what its all about so as a complete noob where do u think i should start?? i know theres a s0, dsod (whatever that means), and like an actual anime (and spin off movies im sure) but like, what would u recommend??

A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON

You're best off starting with the manga (which i may or may not have a link to). It's the original continuity and is frankly the most enjoyable version of the story and characters in my opinion. Season 0 was its first anime adaptation, which only aired in Japan. It covers the first ~7 volumes of the manga roughly. I'd start with this before moving on to the duel monsters anime.

The anime we got in the west is Duel Monsters. (Here's season 1, the channel has a lot of the other seasons as well) It skips past the first 7 volumes to get straight to the card games. To be fully honest this anime is...an experience, let's say. HORRIBLE pacing, censorship a la mode, a shit load of filler arcs, and character assassination to top things off. It's still good fun but you're not going to get the best version of the story out of it.

If you like the Duel Monsters anime but wish the duels didn't last 5+ episodes, here's the abridged series. Be warned, a lot of the early episodes are a product of their time, let's say. This is the original abridged series EVER on the internet, and it's still an ongoing project. Honest to god there is nothing significantly worthwhile in the real anime that you'll miss out on by just watching abridged instead LMAO

DSOD stands for Dark Side of Dimensions, which is the manga's tie-in epilogue movie. I'd save it for last.

If you are for some ungodly reason interested in learning the actual real life card game, Master Duel is free to download on most platforms. It's a lot of fun (if you don't drive yourself insane playing ranked) and I found it to be really helpful at teaching the game to a complete noob like myself. There's also Duel Links, which is a slightly more casual mobile game that uses a modified format for faster paced matches.

Probably the only thing they could pull with 2x2 that would genuinely upset me is some sort of twist that nullifies the original canon. I doubt they will do that though and i think they literally wont be able to since we're already going in with the understanding that its a separate timeline so genuinely my body is ready for whatever bullshit they will pull

Bc the thing about it is is im so Not against "it was all a dream/a game/ a simulation" twist reveals at all. I, very obviously, LOVE them. Its my favourite type of story element honestly. And danganronpa knows how to do it well because it Did do it well with SDR2. Like everything that happened in the simulation wasnt real but it was still impactful. Just because it wasnt real it doesnt mean it didnt mean anything and thats the important part of that trope is making the story still matter even if it technically "didnt" happen. So thats why V3 feels just. Particularly spiteful to me.

I think if JUST V3 had been a television show, I probs wouldve loved it. If it had left the rest of cannon alone, omg, insane crazy amazing what the hell! Bc that whole thing with them not knowing their real identities before the show is so cool. Such a cool evolution of the SDR2 twist. But I dont care even slightly because like actually how dare you look me in the eyes and say that all of the pain and sacrifice the THH cast made was for nothing and how dare you say that Hinata and the Remnant's choice to keep living was pointless because it wasn't real and it doesnt matter. I will never be convinced to like that ending. Sorry !

As disrespectful as it was for V3 to parade around the previous cast of characters that everyone loved while shoving our faces into the dirt and spiting on us going "And none of it mattered because they werent real and were actors you fucking stupid cunt" can you imagine how much funnier it would've been if they hadn't confirmed that Nagito Komaeda was alive and well before that? Imagine Komaeda, THE Nagito Komaeda, after being dead as far as canon is concerned for 5 years and you get to the end of V3 for them to just puppet his dead corpse in front of us while laughing at us for ever caring. Omg. Hilarious!!
