This, having worked briefly as a crisis counsellor for victims of family abuse the relationship Dean has a classic control/abuse/ownership dynamic towards Sam that we see in abusive relationships. Sam has classic PTSD and withdrawal of an abuse victim. People who deny this are 100% invalidating victims of abuse and excusing it the same way the abuser does.
