a friend of mine started dating this girl who recently got out of an abusive marriage with another woman. when they met, they were originally only casual, bc the girl and her wife had agreed on an open marriage (but the wife would get jealous and then violent). anyway, this was 6 months ago. a month or two in, the girl had ended it with my friend over text, saying she wanted to focus on repairing her relationship with her wife. idk when they started texting and seeing each other again, but my friend lowkey hid the fact that they were seeing each other again bc she knew i thought the situation was too messy to be involved in.
now, apparently the girl is separated with her wife—she has her own apartment and everything. idk if they started the divorce proceedings. but the girl just recently asked my friend to be her girlfriend, and my friend said yes. when my friend relayed the news to me and another mutual friend of ours, our reactions were predictable (she literally prefaced the news by saying ‘y’all might not like this’, then told us. our reactions were kinda jokingly disapproving. i said ‘okay, a wife and a girlfriend!’ and my other friend was like ‘oh….?’) anyway my friend abruptly ended the call.
later, my friend texted us saying that our reaction hurt her feelings and that she feels like we think she’s stupid when it comes to being with the girl, and it feels belittling. i apologized for my judgmental reaction and explained where it was coming from, and also said that i still don’t like the situation based on the limited information i had, but all i could do was be supportive when she wanted support, and that i’ll be welcoming to the girl if she ever decides to bring her around. i also said that i think if it were the other way around and i were in a situation like this, she’d be skeptical too. she said she understood but she wishes we had asked more questions and that it feels like ‘y’all have these standards for how a relationship should work and develop and that’s just not always how it goes’. personally, i still think it’s naive. but again, i have limited information and i don’t have relationship experience.
