As long as the majority of what you listen to is emo music, you are emo. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Hi! I have a weird question and dunno where/ who else to ask (don't have reddit)

I'm writing a Call of Duty Modern Warfare I| fanfic. As you probably know,

one of the main characters has a thick Scottish accent and uses Scots as well.

I did check the dialogue I wrote for accuracy but I still feel weird about it.

Is it fine for someone who's not even a native English speaker to use Scots rather heavy-handedly to fit the character?

And would you kindly tag @20sturnedmeemo-punk on the reply? (sideblog, don’t wanna reveal main…)

Firstly, I wouldn't say it's wrong to try and incorporate scots slang and jargon into you works if you want to. HOWEVER.

From my personal experience reading fanfiction (oh, to admit to my sins). It's hard to write convincing organic scottish dialogue, especially if you're not scottish. The way we speak is... hard to emulate. I personally would rather not read fics where they do this as I find it kind of immersion breaking, even moreso if the writing is wrong or inconsistent with the usage of the slang.

I hope that's not too much of a debbie downer. I think... Maybe non scottish people won't be bothered by it as much if at all though...?Maybe you should get someone who's scottish to beta read it ?

As a Scottish person who has been writing in this fandom since the first version of this game came out, I've got skin in this coming and going.

I've also written some basic beginner's guides with some pointers before here and here.

The character that the original poster is talking about, Johnny "Soap" MacTavish, doesn't talk in Scots particularly often in the game. When he does, he's mocked, and he goes back to speaking English; although he retains some dialect, and the subtitles reflect this.

For some reason, fan writers want to write him as either a fluent Gaelic speaker, or as if he is Rabbie Burns reincarnated, both of which throw me, a native Scot, right out of any suspension of disbelief I've built up.

This is not to say don't do it, but I would say keep in your mind the context in which he speaks because he code switches. He may, over time, be comfortable speaking with a more pronounced dialect amongst friends, but he's unlikely to speak the same way all the time.

Remember that Scots language changes over years. As in English, there are words that are archaic, and have fallen out of favour. There's also regional variation. I saw someone use "peedie" when they wanted to say that something was "small" a word that I have heard used once, by a character who was telling an ancient folk tale, and who had to explain that the word meant "small" to her modern audience.

The dictionary of the Scots language allows you to see the history of word, and gives examples of context; although you cannot search an English word and find a Scots equivalent, it's for Scots words and for meanings and context in English. This will tell you if the word is still in regular modern use.

I would say that the best course of action is not to go too heavy-handed with it, particularly if you are not sure of the nuances of speech. Writing in English, and adjusting the grammer and some of the vocabulary would be enough to be respectful of Scottish culture and voices without doing harm, and as you get more exposure to the language, you will feel more comfortable putting more in. I've already written about this in the examples cited.

Watch Scottish media, read books by modern Scottish authors set in Scotland, and you will get the hang of it in time.

In terms of video examples, you can watch Chewin' The Fat, Still Game, Limmy, Scot Squad, as examples of Scottish media where characters speak like (admittedly this is a Glasgow bias) people around me today.

As I just said in another reblog of this, I acknowledge it would be the most respectful/ best thing for me to cut out all that attempt at writing Scots…

As for why I have Soap talking (a bit much) in Scots… my Original Character is Scottish-English (I know, I know) so I figured that would give Soap a reason he’d jump on.

So, as much as it’ll be a pain, looks like I’ll have to edit out the use of Scots (I did read up and know that’s a standalone language in its own right.)

I honestly wish I had asked this sooner—would have saved me editing several chapters worth of dialogue— but I’m glad I asked anyway.

And while I generally agree about beta readers from the cultures in question, I don’t know anyone from Scotland and couldn’t afford to pay a beta-reader.
