My honest thoughts abt cottagecore are not that you shouldn’t dream of living an intimate, environmentally friendly life, taking care of the land, but what we have problems with is the idea of homesteading. A lot of colonialism was fueled by the inherent want to find new land and tame it, so you can live a domestic life on it, and natives of all countries have felt unsafe of that idea for centuries due to the effects it has had on us. Theoretically, we would rather you live on land we have autonomy over, and in my personal opinion, you would use local methods of permaculture and knowledge from people who’ve taken care of the land for thousands of years, to effectively live on the land whilst maintaining the fragile ecosystem within it. Not only does the idea of western farming harm lands that it’s been introduced to when practiced in certain ways, but we just don’t want to hear the homesteading rhetoric. I’ll gladly enjoy the idea of drying herbs and cooking tender meals for my affectionate lover, but.. until we set this boundary,

Also, when I say autonomy over the land, I mean the tribal or village government controls it, not that anyone is literally choosing what you as an individual should do.

And like, I’m not gonna deny that my explanation of my opinion of cottagecore sounds controlling or broad. But it is me explaining the concept of land back in a way that is actually disgestable to some people, because I am one of the people who aren’t exhausted enough to not have the clarity to explain. Not to mention that my opinion has more nuance than was actually told, and that I do think African-American people specifically should also have autonomy over the land after being displaced here for hundreds of years. I don’t think I have a way to explain this better without completely changing this post though, because I’m not as well-spoken as I come out to be, I would prefer if you rb’d this version.

i honest to god can't stress how important it is to support authors of colour. white authors are NEVER going to be able to captures the experience of a person of colour in an authentic way and it will be flawed whether they had good intentions or not. support authors of colour because that is where you will get the best rep. if you're looking for good rep of a certain marginalised group and you turn to someone outside of that group for a good, authentic retelling of their experiences you will inevitably be disappointed by the outcome. turning to white people should not be the first thing you do when looking for good diverse rep that is absolutely the last place you should be going
