Are wyvern lords overpowered in Three Houses?

I’m being 100% for real when I say Three Houses Wyvern Lords are the single-handedly most busted part of any Fire Emblem game. More than Seth in Sacred Stones, more than Nosferatu or Galeforce in Awakening; you name it, Three Houses Wyvern Lords has it beat.

Where do I even begin. Second highest base strength in the game and tied with War Master and Barbarossa (Claude’s personal class, which is basically just Wyvern Lord with bows) for the highest strength growth. Tied with Falcon Knight and Barbarossa for highest base speed. Passively grants Avoid +10. Can Canto in and out of enemy range. It’s a flying class. Weakness to bows can basically be toggled on and off by dismounting. There are few notable mages across all four routes that can take advantage of their alleged magic weakness, and the few that exist can mostly be dealt with via Canto hit and runs. It’s not gender locked. It’s not DLC locked. Promotion requirements can be easily fudged by soft resetting. You’re not actually locked to just axes and lances and can still use whatever weapon you want. It shares almost all these traits with its preceding class, Wyvern Rider, which also has the benefit of being way easier to get into than Warrior do you might as well funnel your axe users down the wyvern route while you’re at it.

It’s comically overtuned. The only things I can think of that hold it back are the fact you can’t freely equip whatever adjutant or battalion to them, but the former is mostly irrelevant and the latter isn’t that big of a deal—even without NG+ or DLC, there’s still enough flying battalions to mostly fill your deployment slots with. The minuscule list of problems that Wyvern Lords can’t deal with (like Meteor Mages) can usually be handled by your mages, basically the only units in the game you’ll want to keep out of a flying class (unless you have the DLC in which case flying magic units!)

All of this unfortunately hinders Three Houses’ open reclass system, which otherwise feels tailor made to cater to people who like making weird, out there unit builds. Which is a shame, because I like making weird, out there unit builds! Fates got this down almost perfect with its reclass system. Give me tryhard builds like Hero Xander and Life and Death Ophelia and goofy shit like Great Master Benny and Sniper Beruka any time. But the problem with Three Houses is that anyone can access any class as long as you train them properly (which the game makes trivially easy to do), and when there’s one option that’s so clearly better than all the rest, there’s no reason to want to mess around and experiment with the other classes. Why should I ever invest in Great Knight or War Master when the returns I’d get from them pale in comparison to what I’d get out of that same unit as a Wyvern Lord? Why bother keeping Edelgard in her slow, heavy armor personal class when she can literally solo the multi-health bar final boss of her route as a Wyvern Lord with minimal investment? Why waste a precious deployment slot on my poor sword infantry units when they’ll just fall behind my high movement, Canto-boosted fliers? All of this is elevated by the fact that Three Houses really wants you to play the game at least four times, once for every route, so you’re bound to venture off the beaten path and experiment with reclassing at least a little bit. The second you figure out how powerful fliers are, the game snaps in half.

What’s frustrating is that I think the game knows this, too, because it’s only the flying classes that have this problem. All the magic, infantry, and horseback classes understand the trade off of mounted classes having weaker stats in exchange for better unit and vice versa, something critical to keep in mind for a game with Canto. But the flyers just ignore this rule. It’s like they forgot to nerf them in playtesting.

For everyone who’s seen the TADC finale in theaters, without spoiling anything, reblog/comment what your theater experience was like. Was it mostly normal/chill, or were there any “disruptive” audience members there? Anyone in costume?

Here’s my experience more in depth: I went to a 21+ theater with two of my friends specifically because I wanted to avoid kids and teenagers singing along to Running The Show and just generally being annoying. Thankfully, no one got tipsy during the finale, at least not enough to ruin the experience for anyone else. I wore the most low effort closet cosplay of Caine imaginable (with a newsboy hat instead of a top hat and my limited edition Hot Topic exclusive Shadow the Hedgehog hoodie filling in for Caine’s tuxedo), and I saw one person wearing a Jax shirt, but otherwise no one dressed up/brought their plushies/etc. It was just like watching any other movie from that point on.

I’m seeing a few reports of rowdy theaters on this post and beyond, which is a shame, but I’m just glad it’s more on the level of like, Wicked fans singing along to Defying Gravity and not people completely trashing the theater or getting into fights like with the Minecraft movie. That’s a really low bar to clear though. Forgive me for sounding like an oldhead but what happened to just sitting down and watching a movie.

DIGITAL CIRCUS FINALE SPOILERS BELOW!!!!

Okay, heads up, I’m using male pronouns for Jax here because that’s how they refer to him at the end of the finale. I’m like 99.99999999% sure Jax is supposed to be transfem, they all but spell it out, but the show ends on Jax still being referred to with he/him pronouns and there’s never a moment of him formally coming out of the closet. If Goose/Glitch has said anything about Jax’s pronouns or gender identity, I either haven’t seen it or such a statement/response does not exist at the time I’m writing this.

I feel like I’m missing something in the way Jax and Ribbit were handled in the finale. Jax essentially comes out as trans to Ribbit, and Ribbit basically responds in the best way possible: she says she supports him and that she won’t tell anyone without his consent. And she doesn’t. And Jax…still gets hyper defensive and pushes her away? I get that there’s a lot of internalization that comes with accepting yourself as trans, but as a narrative beat it’s really weak because it feels like Jax basically pushed her into killing herself over nothing. I think it’d make more sense if Kaufmo actually did open the door instead of just knocking and saw Jax with the bow, and Jax blamed Ribbit for being “outed” like that. As is it really just feels like he lashes out for no reason, which is a huge problem for this specific moment because that informs who he is as a character for the rest of the series.

I don’t know. Maybe I’m not trans enough to get it. But the Jax and Ribbit stuff takes up such a big chunk of the finale, so I really wish that there was a little more substance to their history with each other other than Jax lashing out at her because he doesn’t want to accept himself as a girl. Not that that’s a bad story to tell, but as a backstory only revealed post mortem in a finale that could’ve really benefitted from some extra runtime for other scenes, it feels simultaneously flaccid and melodramatic.
