On migraines: is there an explanation for some of the visual issues I get beforehand? Sometimes I can only see half of an object or person at once. And even though which half I see can flip horizontally it doesn't stop for maybe 10-15 minutes and I get the pain 20-30 minutes later.
That sounds like your aura may involve your visual cortex. An aura is basically your brain having a bit of a fit, and neurons firing where they shouldn’t, which is why the ‘flip’ can happen and why it doesn’t make a different what you’re looking at and how. The problem happens in the brain, not in your eyes.
Hm, no idea if drachenrose will see this bc they’re not showing up in the @ tag menu but - Both visual auras, any other sort of aura, and the prodromal state that happens in the days before a migrane are part of the migrane itself. If you take ibuprofen as soon as you get even a hint of an aura, it’s more likely to cut off the whole thing than if you wait. Anything that constricts blood vessels like caffeine will help too. If you’re getting them 1/month or more frequently and/or your aura starts to mess with other cortexes (ex you can’t understand what people are saying and temporary loss of words or you have memory issues during the preheadache phase) and you don’t have one already, consider a visit to a neurologist, bc migrane specific meds work really well and you’ll basically never need to deal with the suckers again once you’ve got the right one.
lol i was told i can’t get an Rx for migraine meds because “they aren’t bad enough” ha ha f UCK yeah no you’re right /currently experiencing second one in four days/
[thank you @queen-plutoria for mentioning migraine buddy app]

Reblog if your cramps have ever
made you vomit
lasted between 2-3 days
stopped you from being able to walk or run
made you cry
It’s not considered a viable excuse on any occasion, and I would like to know why.
add
woken you up at night the pain was so bad
also
made you pass out
don’t forget
made you unable to stand up without doubling over and grabbing onto the closest object for support
see also: just wanting a warm bath to help soothe the ache but NOPE CAN’T DO THAT.
Fucks up your bowels as well. People don’t talk about that but it really does.
Or if you had appendicitis and didn’t go to the hospital because the excruciating pain still wasn’t as bad as your monthly cramps.
Lydia!! That’s horrible! EVERYONE READ THAT LAST COMMENT IF YOU STILL HAVE YOUR DOUBTS!!
Would just like to add, in addition to cramps:
needing a FUCKING BLOOD TRANSFUSION because it just. won’t. stop.
the black-out, fall down, incoherent, vomiting, destroying your stomach and liver with painkillers-that-do-nothing migraines are good times too
A PSA About Chronic Pain
Pain is draining. Even though it is physically *painful*, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Pain takes energy. It steals joy and tries to put a hold on happiness. There is truly no relaxing when pain is present; one is constantly fighting to be stronger than the pain.
Pain turns small tasks into marathons. Showering becomes difficult and draining. Eating is exhausting. Getting dressed and brushing teeth can seem nearly impossible.
If there was one thing about my life I wish people could truly understand, it’s that pain is a dominating force in my world. I may fight it, I may ignore it, I may even have good days…but pain - or the plethora of symptoms it brings along - is always present.
Does that mean I am unhappy? No. Does that mean I am strong? Yes.
I wish people understood this.
I wish there was a way to communicate what that constant state of “my world begins and ends in pain” /does/ to you.
Invisible illnesses suck the life out of you.
Nearly everyone with ADHD answers an emphatic yes to the question: “Have you always been more sensitive than others to rejection, teasing, criticism, or your own perception that you have failed or fallen short?” This is the definition of a condition called rejection-sensitive dysphoria. When I ask ADHDers to elaborate on it, they say: “I’m always tense. I can never relax. I can’t just sit there and watch a TV program with the rest of the family. I can’t turn my brain and body off to go to sleep at night. Because I’m sensitive to my perception that other people disapprove of me, I am fearful in personal interactions.” They are describing the inner experience of being hyperactive or hyper-aroused. Remember that most kids after age 14 don’t show much overt hyperactivity, but it’s still present internally, if you ask them about it. The emotional response to the perception of failure is catastrophic for those with the condition. The term “dysphoria” means “difficult to bear,” and most people with ADHD report that they “can hardly stand it.” They are not wimps; disapproval hurts them much more than it hurts neurotypical people. If emotional pain is internalized, a person may experience depression and loss of self-esteem in the short term. If emotions are externalized, pain can be expressed as rage at the person or situation that wounded them. In the long term, there are two personality outcomes. The person with ADHD becomes a people pleaser, always making sure that friends, acquaintances, and family approve of him. After years of constant vigilance, the ADHD person becomes a chameleon who has lost track of what she wants for her own life. Others find that the pain of failure is so bad that they refuse to try anything unless they are assured of a quick, easy, and complete success. Taking a chance is too big an emotional risk. Their lives remain stunted and limited. For many years, rejection-sensitive dysphoria has been the hallmark of what has been called atypical depression. The reason that it was not called “typical” depression is that it is not depression at all but the ADHD nervous system’s instantaneous response to the trigger of rejection.

It’s funny how science fiction universes so often treat humans as a boring, default everyman species or even the weakest and dumbest.
I want to see a sci fi universe where we’re actually considered one of the more hideous and terrifying species.
How do we know our saliva and skin oils wouldn’t be ultra-corrosive to most other sapient races? What if we actually have the strongest vocal chords and can paralyze or kill the inhabitants of other worlds just by screaming at them? What if most sentient life in the universe turns out to be vegetable-like and lives in fear of us rare “animal” races who can move so quickly and chew shit up with our teeth?
Like that old story “they’re made of meat,” only we’re scarier.
HOLY SHIT THEY EAT CAPSAICIN FOR FUN
YOU GUYS I HEARD A HUMAN ONCE ATE AN AIRPLANE.
A HUMAN CAN KEEP FIGHTING FOR HOURS EVEN AFTER YOU SHOOT IT
humans are a proud warrior race with a pantheon of bloody gods: Ram-Bo, Schwarzenegger, etc.
REMOVING A LIMB WILL NOT FATALLY INCAPACITATE HUMANS: ALWAYS DESTROY THE HEAD.
WARNING: HUMANS CAN DETECT YOU EVEN AT NIGHT BY TRACKING VIBRATIONS THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE
WARNING: HUMANS CAN REPRODUCE AT A RATE OF 1 PER SPACEYEAR. DESTROY INFESTATIONS IMMEDIATELY
THE HUMAN MOUTH HAS OVER THIRTY OUTCROPS OF BONE AND POWERFUL JAW MUSCLES.
HUMAN BITES CAN BE FATALLY INFECTIOUS EVEN TO OTHER HUMANS
WARNING: HUMANS CAN AND WILL USE IMPROVISED WEAPONS. SEE CLASSIFIED DATA LABELED J. CHAN.
HUMANS CAN PROJECT BIOWEAPONS FROM ALMOST EVERY ORIFICE ON THEIR BODY. DO NOT INHALE
OH GOD THE HUMANS FIGURED OUT DOOR HANDLES OH GOD OH GOD
More seriously, humans do have a number of advantages even among Terrestrial life. Our endurance, shock resistance, and ability to recover from injury is absurdly high compared to almost any other animal. We often use the phrase “healthy as a horse” to connote heartiness - but compared to a human, a horse is as fragile as spun glass. There’s mounting evidence that our primitive ancestors would hunt large prey simply by following it at a walking pace, without sleep or rest, until it died of exhaustion; it’s called pursuit predation. Basically, we’re the Terminator.
(The only other animal that can sort of keep up with us? Dogs. That’s why we use them for hunting. And even then, it’s only “sort of”.)
Now extrapolate that to a galaxy in which most sapient life did not evolve from hyper-specialised pursuit predators:
Our strength and speed is nothing to write home about, but we don’t need to overpower or outrun you. We just need to outlast you - and by any other species’ standards, we just plain don’t get tired.
Where a simple broken leg will cause most species to go into shock and die, we can recover from virtually any injury that’s not immediately fatal. Even traumatic dismemberment isn’t necessarily a career-ending injury for a human.
We heal from injuries with extreme rapidity, recovering in weeks from wounds that would take others months or years to heal. The results aren’t pretty - humans have hyperactive scar tissue, among our other survival-oriented traits - but they’re highly functional.
Speaking of scarring, look at our medical science. We developed surgery centuries before developing even the most rudimentary anesthetics or life support. In extermis, humans have been known to perform surgery on themselves - and survive. Thanks to our extreme heartiness, we regard as routine medical procedures what most other species would regard as inventive forms of murder. We even perform radical surgery on ourselves for purely cosmetic reasons.
In essence, we’d be Space Orcs.
Our jaws have too many TEETH in them, so we developed a way to WELD METAL TO OUR TEETH and FORCE THE BONES IN OUR JAW to restructure over the course of years to fit them back into shape, and then we continue to wear metal in out mouths to keep them in place.
We formed cohabitative relationships with tiny mammals and insects we keep at bay from bothering us by death, often using little analouge traps.
And by god, we will eat anything.
We use borderline toxic peppers to season our food.
We expose ourselves to potentially lethal solar radiation in the pursuit of darkening our skin.
We risk hearing loss for the opportunity to see our favorite musicians live.
We have a game where two people get into an enclosed area and hit each other until time runs out/one of them pass out
We willingly jump out of planes with only a flimsy piece of cloth to prevent us from splattering against the ground.
Our response to natural disasters is to just rebuild our buildings in the exact same places.
We climb mountains and risk freezing to death for bragging rights
We invented dogs. We took our one time predators and completely domesticated them.
On a planet full of lions, tigers and bears, we managed to advance further and faster than any other species on the planet.
Klingons and Krogan and Orcs ain’t got shit on us
We drink ethanol (in concentrations high enough to be used as an effective as microbicide or a solvent!) for the express purpose of achieving blood toxicity and disrupting normal brain function… AS A RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY!
On the same subject, we also deliberately incinerate assorted substances and then inhale the particulate-heavy smoke and vapor resulting for the same effect. EVEN IN THE FACE OF SAID SUBSTANCES BEING CARCINOGENIC, BECAUSE WE JUST DON’T GIVE A FUCK.
Humans do not have biological castes. Kill their commander and another will take its place. Soldiers left alone on a planet will start farming and manufacturing to survive. Farmers and manufacturers will take up arms and kill you if pressed. Just because two humans look different doesn’t mean they cannot do each other’s jobs.
Breeding does not kill them. A single human can mate dozens or hundreds of times in a lifetime. They often do so as recreation. Xenobiology team six believes they do not have a mating season but this is too strange to be true.
Their appendages are not designed for hitting, so they developed special training to make them very good at hitting anyhow.
The proteins making up their bodies are toxic and cause prion disease. Do not touch anything humans have touched. Do not consume earth foods. Fire does not adequately remove this contamination.
Humans perceive sixteen times the colors we do. Do not hide in bushes or vines from humans. They can distinguish your pelt from the foliage with ease.
We tried venting waste gas into the tunnels to kill the humans when they attacked. Turns out they breathe it.
Everything on their planet came from a single biological strain. They developed comprehensive genetics BEFORE they developed space travel.
They lack radio receptors and cannot be brought into compliance with right-thought simply by broadcasting to them. Even after we learned how to translate it into sound-waves one of their hatchlings drove the Great Authority mad by responding to every demand with a single question: “Why?”
#an individual human being is actually a microbiome in its own right—you are dealing with a legion each time you approach them #they carry pathological agents inside their deep tissues and this is advantageous to their health #one of the most widespread and resilient viruses on their planet is treated as mildly hazardous—even though it causes #massive disruption to the body’s homeostasis #(their young offspring endure multiple rhinovirus infections EACH YEAR yet they seem unperturbed by this) #they have developed such long lifespans that now their primary threat is their own body’s degeneration #humanity has literally figured out how to survive so long that their body gives out under them #and they are not satisfied with that #stupid willful vengeful survivalists who treat mortality like a challenge
And people wonder why we’re the top of the food chain.
Humanlife and most Earthlife are in a state of unlife.
This unlife views itself as separate from other life even similar forms.
Humanlife has dedicated much communication to this state. Examples: “self”, “individuality”, “me”, “myself”, “I”
This unlife functions as a virus and consumes the entire ecosystem without any moderation mechanism.
For simplicity this unique Earthlife mode as “selfish” from the Humanlife communication which defines it.
‘ one of their hatchlings drove the Great Authority mad by responding to every demand with a single question: “Why?” ‘

Only Lovers Left Alive: Adam [INTP]
Introverted Thinking (Ti): Adam is somewhat detached from his surroundings, and has an analytical mind. He makes decisions based on practicality rather than sentiment when it comes to survival (not drinking too much blood, keeping a safe supply in the house, checking it carefully). He likes to “tinker with things,” and reuse old stuff in his apartment rather than buy new stuff; he has rigged his 70’s television and an assortment of other gadgets to work as a video phone!
Extroverted Intuition (Ne): His apartment is a chaotic mess of half-finished projects, hobbies he has taken a momentary interest in, stacks of books, and other indications of his general restlessness and boredom without stimulation. Adam is something of a philosopher and dreamer, who muses on eternal thoughts whenever he is in a melancholy mood.
Introverted Sensing (Si): He is firmly against modernization and prefers the old to the new; rather than buy new technology, Adam re-invents and re-purposes the old. He often reminiscences about the past, and expects people to behave in similar patterns to what he has seen out of them before (hence, his dislike of Ava, who has a history of irrational and unpredictable behavior).
Extroverted Feeling (Fe): Melancholy is Adam’s middle name. With a little prompting, Eve can get him to open up about his feelings on a variety of topics, including his distaste for modern-day humans and their selfish natures. He cares what other people think of him, but is uncomfortable with too much affirmation. If the others agree about something, he will go along with it to keep the peace.
