Mystery Girl™ may resemble Rose, but you just know her and Pearl’s relationship dynamic is gonna be wholly different.
For the entire thousands-of-years span that Rose and Pearl were together, Pearl idolized Rose. Lived for her. Risked death for her. Maybe even felt that she owed her life and her freedom to her. She hung on Rose’s every word, and followed Rose’s creed to the letter. She loved what Rose loved (earth, humans), often despite herself. She lost contact with a world and culture she clearly had great admiration for (in some ways). All to be with, and to hang on the words of Rose.
But when Pearl talks to Mystery Girl? She emphasizes the fact that she has saved the world multiple times (and you’re welcome, she says, jokingly). She emphasizes that she is a magical being comprised entirely of light. She takes the initiative in approaching her. She lets her own desires and identity matter. In so doing, Pearl gets to be the mysterious, enigmatic, powerful one. She gets to approach Mystery Girl from secure footing, with a strong identity and clear sense of her own purpose and value. Sure, we may see the romance play out from Pearl’s (love-struck, smitten) perspective, but imagine how Pearl looks to Mystery Girl™. Like a vision of intergalactic loveliness and strength. Not just a free, independent being, but a world-saving, human-freeing one.
Basically, what I’m saying is, Pearl just met her Greg.
That inversion of the Rose-Pearl dynamic is really something special. And it gives me all kinds of hope for the relationship, and for Pearl’s arc.
