26H URBANISM: Check out our presentation at the Moscow Urban Forum (MUF) 2014 for the ISOCARP YPP workshop Moscow, Russia. We proposed to develop the exhibition center as a site where people can retreat, learn, and participate: Tranquility - Redeveloping the Moscow Exhibition Center (VDNH). check out the presentation online: http://goo.gl/zAYO2w.
26H URBANISM: Chapter Tranquility, Redeveloping the Moscow Exhibition Center (VDNH). Moscow is busy, too busy. Moscovites need to be able to escape the city, within the city. In addition, the VDNH contains a lot of potential to house and exhibit the richness of Russian history, national achievements, and diverse cultural ways of living. The VDNH will slow down the tempo and increase the focus and enjoyment of living in Moscow. The project proposes to escape the busy city; via a park, in addition to uncover by discovering; via edutainment. By doing so, the project proposes to transform the area to become even more popular, informative, and global-orientated while remaining different, eclectic, and magical. Group members & authors include: Anna Nagornaya; Evgeniya Belashova; Farid Latroch; Kadyrov Timur ; Kseniia Mezenina ; Maria Luchnikova ; Wouter Pocornie ; & Zofia Krzykawska. 26H URBANISM: The ISOCARP YPP Moscow 2014 report is online. Last week the full report was made available on the ISOCARP website (www.isocarp.org). The workshop took place in December 2014 and focused on the redevelopment of the Moscow Exhibition Center, also known as VDNH. This (surreal) place in the North of Moscow holds an eclectic collection of pavilions and exhibition pieces. I was part of the group Tranquility which proposed to consider developing this site to retreat from the busy city life. Tranquility: Escaping the busy city & uncovering by discovering. 26H ARCHITECTURE: RECAP: Haiti & the Saga of Vulnerability (excerpt). In light of the Pecha Kucha presentation at Rialto (27/2/2015) check out the other works focusing on the reconstruction mission in Haiti. Following the 12/1/2010 earthquake, one of the world’s most vulnerable nations with strong heritage and cultural history is faced with re-developing their affected areas and livelihoods. With a History Thesis in the field of Architecture we were able to examine the rich history of Haiti and reflect on the architectural evolution and urban development. This research extracted from fieldwork research and is used to argument a local adaptive style in architecture and urban development in my other thesis works. Take a look at the excerpt of the History Thesis: https://goo.gl/CJbhHz About the thesis, in short: The international attention following the 12/1/2010 earthquake in Haiti exposed the nation’s vulnerability but also portrayed the stigmatization of Haiti and its culture. What do we actually know about Haiti? What can we learn from the history of the country? In addition, how did it become so vulnerable? More concretely, how did Haiti develop over the course of time to the point that an earthquake with its epicenter close to the nation’s capital; Port-Au-Prince, could expose the current severe vulnerable state of Haiti and its population? #year1804 #architecture #colonialism #design #development #education #haiti #history #identity #imperialism #methodology #neocolonialism #ngo #planning #postdisaster #redevelopment #reconstruction #revolution #syncretism #urbandesign #urbandevelopment #urbanplanning, #urbanism #vernacular #villarosa #vulnerability
26H ARCHITECTURE: RECAP: Identity in Post-Disaster Re-Development (excerpt). My MSc Thesis (in the direction of Architecture) examines the possibilities of integrating identity in de design and build process. This research depended strongly on fieldwork research and is expanded via my MSc Thesis in the direction of Urbanism. That addendum was presented as the Pecha Kucha. Take a look at the excerpt of the MSc Architecture thesis: https://goo.gl/TU0DKS For MSc Urbanism, see excerpt: http://goo.gl/gzP9sB Also, see the Pecha Kucha: https://goo.gl/pSqBr1 About the thesis, in short: The large amount of actors involved in the reconstruction mission in Haiti have to find a way to work in an historically instable political situation and with recently rapid transforming economic and cultural development potential. Will Haiti rise as a nation to strengthen itself? The crisis poses danger as well as opportunities. The people of Haiti have to deal with major losses and post-disaster psychological issues. The identity of the nation will transform. Will emigration take on new heights? As emigration and its resulting remittance indicate a strong potential for Haitian- stimulated (private) development. A nation domestically dominated by poverty has limited options to develop but from an historic point of view it seems to sustain due to its cultural resilience; its social capital. The main issue is how to reduce vulnerability. It will have to undergo major transformation to locally agglomerate the process of development in order to decrease the vulnerability on long-term. #architecture #cbo #design #development #education #haiti #identity #methodology #ngo #planning #postdisaster #redevelopment #reconstruction #syncretism #urbandesign #urbanplanning, #urbanism #villarosa
26H URBANISM: The Pecha Kucha presentation is now online. My MSc Thesis (in the direction of Urbanism) was selected for the NALACS Thesis Award. On February 27, 2015 the 7 nominees from various disciplines presented a Pecha Kucha during a special event. This was a good opportunity to briefly share my research results and share some of my experiences in Haiti. 26H CONSULT: ‘Reading and Re-adding The Wire’ presentation is online, now. http://goo.gl/4zSRKt Earlier this month (9/2/2015) I had the opportunity to share some insights and thoughts on the critically acclaimed series The Wire (HBO) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). As an guest lecturer I presented for a BSc course on Multiperspectivism: ‘Reading and Re-adding The Wire’. I’m convinced that The Wire contains so many layers of storytelling and production that the creators, predominately David Simon, have constructed an universe to extract from. They call it a visual novel. Core chapters: • ‘America, That Got Left Behind (Opening Scene) –aka– Snotboogie’ • ‘The Game (Chess Scene) –aka– The Demise of Pawns’ • ‘Gentrification (The Demolition of the Towers Scene –aka– Reform’ • ‘Marlo Stanfield (portrayed by Jamie Hector) –aka– Black’ • 'Michael Lee (portrayed by Tristan Wilds) –aka– Fresh?’ LOOK OUT FOR: November 2015 when the University of Amsterdam is organizing an ‘Open Collegedag: The Wire’ and the publication. #thewire #wire #series #semiotics #art #presentation #uva #amsterdam #26H #studio26H

I’m convinced that The Wire contains so many layers of storytelling and production that the creators, predominately David Simon, have constructed an universe to extract from. They call it a visual novel. The final chapter in the presentation was: 'Michael Lee (portrayed by Tristan Wilds) –aka– Fresh?’. This is an attempt to link the character Michael Lee in The Wire to the character Michael aka Fresh in the movie Fresh (1994). This is also a conclusive part of the presentation, bringing back the wider context to subjectively (re-)add to the analysis of The Wire. LOOK OUT FOR: November 2015 when the University of Amsterdam is organizing an ‘Open Collegedag: The Wire’ for the second time around. On this day the publication will be presented and some of the speakers, if I’m lucky including myself, will present to a wider audience. Keep you posted. Much obliged. #thewire #wire #michaellee #michael #series #semiotics #art #presentation #uva #amsterdam #26H #studio26H

In addition I’m writing an article for an upcoming book comprised and published by the University of Amsterdam. One of the chapters in the presentation was: ‘Marlo Stanfield (portrayed by Jamie Hector) –aka– Black’. I shared insights on the limited trivia surrounding this intriguing character and made arguments for a possible applied beat sheet, references to Goldman Sachs, the character as an allegory, and the minimalistic (silent) performance of the actor. LOOK OUT FOR: November 2015 when the University of Amsterdam is organizing an ‘Open Collegedag: The Wire’ for the second time around.
