This living image captured by Fred Herzog is a favourite of mine in his collection, taken in 1959 on Alexander Street. This image shows a grown man and a young boy. Although this picture was exhibited in the gallery, I could not take a photo of this work of art. In this photo, Herzog superbly demonstrates a strict contrast between two separate age groups of which show highly different thought processes. The young boy is full of joy and hope and eager to live on to achieve his “childhood” or “lifelong” dreams. However in the background is a man that has experienced the harsh environment and savagery of the real world. One can perceive multiple meaning within this photo, however one thing stands out to me. What I believe Herzog has shown is the difference in how age and maturity changes a person, and alters their thoughts on life. This is why this photo is my favourite work from Fred Herzog.
