Calamity ?
We need to talk about Stampgaze (and not much in a happy way I am afraid)
Aight fuck it, the squeaky hampster wheel that is my brain will not let me sleep until I post this. Will add on to this post as I think of things later! This is 1:30 am sleep deprived posting, at least on this first post, so BEAR WITH ME!!
To start off, this isn't me saying "Durr the original is BETTER" with no reason other than it's the original so I like it. That kinda talk always pisses me off. I gave Stampgaze every goddamn chance I could give it, but my patience... my goddamn patience found a limit.
To start off, idk if this is just a me thing, but the soundtrack was very... bla?
There are some stand-out tracks that I do very much enjoy and even have on playlists, like Puppetmaster and Guignol, Nai's theme is very effective... but that's really honestly it.
I think largely what the soundtrack missed was texture. Trigun 98's soundtrack was ICONIC and I have almost all of it on my drawing playlist. The soundtrack for 98 was way ahead of its time imo. It was gritty, it was a perfect mix of cowboy movies, sci fi horror, and jazz. It was experimental and rough around the edges, just like the world it helped bring to life. Some of the tracks are downright as feral as the people on Gunsmoke/Noman's Land.
Stampgaze had its moments- it dabbled with some jazz, some freeform sax, some glitchy sci-fi motifs... but it didn't... really hit. Not like 98. Back when Stampgaze was just Stampede, I liked it all save for a couple gripes- and the soundtrack was one of them. It was orchestral, polished save for some jazzy bits, and really just... clean. It sounded like anime soundtrack for p much any other anime I have heard. It was honestly a letdown.
I ESPECIALLY missed Sound Life. I understand it wasn't really a Thing in the manga, but it was so significant in 98. It's such a haunting, sad, pretty song imo, and I feel it would have been such a lovely nod to 98 while still largely being Trimax based.
I haven't watched it yet, but I heard some of Gachiakuta's soundtrack and oh my GOD. If Stampgaze wanted a more modern soundtrack that still kept the texture and grit of 98, they should have gone the Gachiakuta route. I couldn't help but think of Stampgaze and what it could have sounded like when I first listened to Gachiakuta's OST.
That's uh... it for now ig? I swear I had more thoughts on the soundtrack, but it is now almost 2 am so I am gonna try and ACTUALLY sleep now. I'll talk more about plot and pacing and stuff maybe tomorrow over breakfast.
Okay so I am sipping coffee now. Please note I have not had consistant access to Trimax (regrettably) so feel free to "um actually" me if I get some things wrong about it!!!!
Something that Stampgaze SUFFERED from was pacing. I feel like it should have been a three season show, esp since you can kinda divide the Trigun/Trimax manga into three parts. I have complained about pacing since Stampede. It moves way too fast in some areas and doesn't give us time to breathe and really extra fall in love with the characters.
98 ALSO had pacing issues near the end due to catching up with the manga, but it at least had at 7-8 episodes before it started trickling the real plot in (and Wolfwood's immaculate tits). Imo a good story needs a little filler here and there so when certain plot points hit, they actually HIT.
Stampgaze really... trimmed the fat. The characters were loveable and we did get to sit with them BRIEFLY in flashes, but we didn't really get to relax with them and laugh with them as much. There's so much to a compelling story than just straight up plot.
In part but not in full, I feel that anime in general not taking time to let their characters breathe has been a result of... well... Naruto. I love Naruto, and yes, I watch the filler. Naruto kept catching up with the manga, so filler eps were made (sometimes in the middle of big plot arcs iirc) so the manga could get ahead again. People rightfully complained. I love me some filler, but it needs to be placed strategically and it needs to be at the right dosage. Once people complained about Naruto filler to a meme-ish degree, I noticed anime get less and less and less filler until it is a super dense action show that has to be constantly on the move. There's also probably social media and shortening attention spans to blame for less filler, I suppose. Idk man, I am so engrossed in typing this that I am forgetting to sip my coffee so I am uncaffinated atm whoops!
I feel like Stampede was building up Meryl's character arc to be really cool only for them to largely make the girls... not do anything in Stampede. Other than Rem, Meryl is definitely one of the most important women in Vash's life and I feel like making her a side character with very little to do plot wise was a bad, even misogynistic.
Dear god, Orange did a lot of things that were just... icky in Stargaze. Jessica's design was changed between seasons, even her race?? Because?? Ig they wanted a more diverse cast? BUT THEY DID THE THING. THE ONE GD THING. THE ONE FAMOUSLY BAD THING TO DO WHEN DESIGNING POC CHARACTERS. THEY GAVE HER THE LIPS. If Orange wanted more diversity, THEY COULD HAVE GIVEN WOLFWOOD MORE MELANIN, you know... like how he looks in ALL OTHER VERSIONS (save for BLR, they made my man Wolfwood PASTY).
Then of course there's the fatphobia that they did with Milly... and how they portrayed the abusive relationship between the twins... there's probably more that I am missing because I have not given Stargaze a rewatch since it originally came out. Stampede had its issues I was willing to forgive, but Stargaze really just... added new issues with each episode.
Coming next: That Episode. You know the one.
Alright fuckers, I'm back. I feel a bit like I am preaching at the choir or at an empty room so I lost a bit of motivation on this, but dammit I do need to talk about Wolfwood's "death" at LEAST.
It pissed me off so goddamn much. I actually got up, walked out of my room, and ranted to my poor mom who has no idea what the hell Trigun is.
Orange hinted at it, they nodded and winked to everyone who knew what was SUPPOSED to be coming up. I was so tense and braced for it, I even made this as a silly/copium piece.
I was looking forward to hearing JYB voice act that scene. He is truly one of my favorite voice actors and the PERFECT man to play Vash. The way he yells, the way he can scream, the way he can sound so so silly and also sound DANGEROUSLY PISSED. They literally could not have picked a better man for Vash.
I was curious how they'd do this. Would they have JYB scream? Would they make it totally muffled or silent? Would they show him inhale and start to scream and then it cuts to those weird bird-worms flying away from the roof, startled? There were so many thematic, amazing, cinematic ways they could have done just this one single frame... and we were ROBBED.
I don't know if they wanted to "fix" it because everyone was crying over Wolfwood's death in both pre-existing versions, but if that's the case, I have one thing to say.
WE GRIEVE FOR SPORT, YOU DUMBASSES. You took away one of THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS IN VASH'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT TO MAKE FUJOSHIS HAPPY THAT THEIR VASHWOOD CAN HAPPEN STILL (I say this as a vashwood enjoyer).
I would at least SOMEWHAT be okay with it if they used it to insert Yuri Hospital and give us a couple episode arc where we can rest and actually MEET THE CHARACTERS (see above post about pacing). What did they do instead? A goddamn punchline.
I was livid
Orange turned one of the most important moments in Vash's life and one of the hardest hitting scenes in the manga into... fucking Kung Fu Panda
Fuck you, Orange. Fuck you.
If you thought this was supposed to be fanservice, it was not. It was fan disservice you fucking asshats
AND THE WORST PART WAS HOW THEY NODDED AND WINKED RIGHT BEFORE IT.
They were fucking SMUG. They posted Wolfwood looking desperate with the vials in his teeth:
CRUNCHYROLL POSTED THIS BS
It was like they were PURPOSEFULLY toying with us and edging everyone just to make sure they get the view count.
And after it was all said and done...
This. If this was fanart, I'd utterly cherish it, but no. It is corperate art rubbing things in after they botched one of the most important scenes in the gd story.
the aroace read of ryland grace is so personal and haunting. "you don't even have a dog." was it not enough to love the world for the sake of living in it. was it not enough to live for the thrill of discovery. was it not enough to smile at your students. was it not enough to be afraid.
I’m not saying it’s easy, but you will do yourself a lifelong favor if you get to the point where you truly believe incontinence is not shameful. Unpleasant, uncomfortable, inconvenient, sure, you don’t have to like it, but trust me, as a nurse who’s done incontinence care hundreds of time—it is, at its heart, whatever. It is what it is. As far as I can tell, there only two types of people: those who’ve shit themselves and those whose turn hasn’t come up yet. To exist is to excrete waste. There’s nothing to gain from feeling ashamed of how you do it. Pissing yourself is value neutral.
Reblogging on main because tbh this is important.
Some medicines cause incontinence. Age causes incontinence. Pregnancy causes incontinance.
I am an IBS haver and I have been on the edge of shitting myself so many times. To be human is to shit oneself. We start this life shitting ourselves, and if we are lucky, we live long enough to end our lives shitting ourselves.
I was my grandma's caretaker before we had to move her to hospice. She had alzheimer's and incontinence. It makes so much difference when you treat someone with said afflictions with respect and dignity. Sometimes grandma and I would have a laugh about it too.
She was such a clean, neat, and orderly person in life. I remember once she was helping us clean house before her mind started slipping and she cleaned the top of our pepper shaker because it had pepper flakes on it. Even when she was dealing with Alzheimer's, she seemed to know at her core she was supposed to be neat and tidy. She was so ashamed when she started having incontinence issues. That shame lasted only a day or two because I just shrugged and said "it happens! Let's get you cleaned up with some fresh Depends and we can get back to dominoes". A small, simple thing like that can mean the WORLD to someone dealing with incontinence.
