things a concerning amount of people aged 25-40 on this site believe about today's children:

they don't know how to read and this makes them mean and dumb. also even though their meanness and dumbness are the result of poor education, they are still personal character flaws that deserve to be mocked.

they are responsible for wide scale censorship in schools and on social media. because, as we all know, children are famously politically powerful, never want to see horny or edgy content, and love it when books are banned in their school libraries.

they love to spread misinformation around so they can all armchair diagnose each other and act like they have learning disabilities in order to excuse their laziness about doing school work. obviously they are all liars and just need to just get their acts together and grow up instead of shirking responsibility for their actions like this.

they are uniquely cruel in comparison to past generations, and this is because of Phone. and also TikTok. no one has ever been cruel like this before.

they would all be much better off with their parents monitoring their internet usage. if they're closeted and their parents are homophobic then, well, sucks for them. kids being abused out of sight is better than them being annoying where I can see them.

i think the proliferation of statements like “it’s not [x dark topic] there’s nuance” online is extremely understandable because implying that a fictional dynamic DOES contain [x dark topic] (abuse, sexual assault, so on) is seen as a discussion ender. a thought terminating cliche. and of course people who want to analyze the dynamic don’t want the discussion to stop so they think the only way to talk about it meaningfully is to deny the involvement of the dark topic.

so i understand. it’s just frustrating because i think abuse and sexual assault and so on do already contain nuance. calling some character an abuser shouldn’t mean “so that’s it, we’ve found the bad guy, any attempt to understand what their internal world is like is therefore apologism for abuse.” it should mean “so why are they doing this, what about the abuse mirrors real-life dynamics, what does the character’s world look like?” the idea that trying to understand a character and labeling them an abuser are mutually exclusive concepts isn’t just frustrating for analysis purposes it’s also frustrating because it denies many victims/survivors their reality, considering how frequent it is for them to feel like their struggles with coming to terms with the parts of their abuser that weren’t one-dimensionally Bad are invisibilized by the black and white narrative.

tldr i think calling a character an abuser should be the start of a discussion and not the end of one. and i think it shouldn’t be seen as an insult so much as it should be a new lens for character interpretation. thank you. falls off my soapbox and faceplants into mud.
