at just after I turned 14 - so exactly this time 9 years ago - I was dragged to a pretty cramped art store in spanish harlem, just east of the metro-north viaduct, owned by a man possessing a beard and poncho sanchez hat. he handed me a card, maybe 5x7, with this image on it. i still have it somewhere. at the moment i laid eyes on the cars, i've made it a personal mission to surround myself with creative folks since puberty. i get pretty intense pseudonuero-emotional-chemical reactions to this piece in particular. too many feels, bro. That feeling you get when you find a place that's more comfortable than your own bedroom - I found in a gallery that smelled of cigars and some alcohol. Sound familiar, Elliott? I'm pretty proud to say that I'm doing exactly that and I'm content with the ghetto bohemia I so naturally exude. i have a new years resolution in mind, but I can't wait 3 weeks to implement it's power, so I'm getting started now. ☺️ happy 2014, y'all!

On this day in music history: December 1, 1979 - “I Wanna Be Your Lover” by Prince hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 2 weeks, also peaking at #11 on the Hot 100 on January 26, 1980. Written and produced by Prince, it is the first chart topping single for the multi-talented Minneapolis born musician. Following his modestly successful debut album “For You”, Prince will return to the studio in the Spring of 1979 to record his sophomore release. Recording at Alpha Studios in Los Angeles, Prince will play all of the instruments and sing all of the vocals, completing the project in just six weeks. Issued as the first single from his self-titled second album on August 24, 1979, “Lover” will quickly become a break out hit on club dance floors and crossover to R&B then pop radio airplay. The single will firmly establish Prince as a commercially viable artist, laying the groundwork for his mainstream pop success in the 80’s and beyond. “I Wanna Be Your Lover” is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
