Photographed by Martin Schoeller for The New Yorker in 2002:
"I was hired by the New Yorker in 2002 to photograph Robin Williams, and after doing my research what stood out most for me was that he was a very physical comedian. I came up with this idea to photograph him swinging from a chandelier in a grand hotel room. Most publicists shoot down these kinds of wild ideas, so I didnât tell anyone what I was up to, but rigged up a chandelier at the Waldorf Astoria hotel for him to swing from. When Robin got there and saw what was happening, he lifted up his shirt and showed me this enormous scar on his shoulder. Heâd just had surgery and couldnât so much as lift his arm. He was so disappointed! He really felt bad about not being able to do it, because he loved the idea and really wanted to help me accomplish my vision.Â
Unlike most Hollywood stars, he was unfazed by his success and position. He talked to everyone from stylists to the crew, to the hotel staff. We ended up asking a maid at the hotel to swing from the chandelier instead, and I asked him to just sit there and read a newspaper, which I think in the end was an even funnier, more unexpected picture.

ancient history truthers: it's so very telling that egyptologists just completely ignore [conspiracy theory] about the [any high profile ancient Egyptian monument], when it's SO CLEAR that [vague proclamation that is either based on cherry-picked details or simply utterly made up] egyptologists: so here is some comprehensive info on why [conspiracy theory] is incorrect and how the evidence cited is misrepresented and/or forged, plus also the clear and inescapable origin of this particular conspiracy. do you want some sources? here are some easily accessible sources. feel free to ask questions if something is unclear! ancient history truthers: *crickets* ancient history truthers, elsewhere on the thread: egyptologists just don't want to engage with the truth.

tbh a neurotypical is just someone who hasnât failed the game often enough or severely enough to be pathologized for it. yet.
part of the problem is that âneurodivergenceâ is so poorly-definedâwhich is fine when youâre talking about particular forms of accessibility and communication, but is immediately a problem when you start treating it as a binary in which âneurodivergentâ people are a coherent class with shared traits other than disenfranchisement.
some people use âneurodivergentâ to exclusively mean developmental and learning disorders, like autism, adhd, dyspraxia, dyslexia, etc. in this case it makes more sense to use a binary framework⊠there are people with developmental disorders that affect them in particular ways and people without, and accessibility can mean broadly similar things.
but other people use âneurodivergentâ to mean basically anything in the DSMâautism, yes, but also OCD, dementia, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar, PTSD, even addictionâyou name it! in this sense itâs useful to the extent of solidarity, mad rights, and addressing ableism and psychiatric abuse. what it is not useful for is identifying a binary of guys who are like this and guys who are like that; all we have in common is failure. and anyone can fail (or be failed), at any time, regardless of communication style or eye contact. this failure is racialized, itâs gendered, itâs class-stratified, itâs age-bound, itâs politicized.
âneurotypicalâ just isnât a coherent Type Of Guy because sanity is a cultural construct that changes over time and context.
