Bouncing off of @doveywovy ‘s posts about Bucky being the tiniest bit of a misogynist with antiquated views on women’s roles in a relationship, I wanted to add onto this by pointing out his and Steve’s upbringings actively shaped their worldview.

Steve was raised by a single mother (his father either dying in WW1, or was an unemployed, abusive drunk who died when he was ten). Sarah Rogers was a nurse and the only breadwinner of the house, in a taxing role that demanded at least some kind of intense education. Being raised in the slums, I can’t imagine there were many housewives in the apartment he grew up in; everyone had to work. Money was so tight for the lower class a mans pride can’t have gotten in the way of actually eating most days.

Alternatively Bucky Barnes grew up fairly well off, enough to own a car in the Great Depression, with a large family and four sisters. It’s never mentioned whether his mother worked or not (although it is accepted in the fanbase that she was a housewife), however it’s clear that Bucky grew up in a household that was allowed to make allowances. Whether that be spending an egregious amount of money on a stuffed bear, or living with the idea that daughters and wives were permitted to not work as traditionally as men did, purely to keep with social balance. Being such a stereotypical ‘mans man’ with his boxing, skirt-chasing and manual labour, as well as having four younger sisters to look after must have easily implanted the idea that his worldviews of men being the strong provider.

This is all to say that I genuinely believe that Steve has no reason to think the women around him aren’t as capable and intelligent as him, and has no problem following their lead if needed. I also believe Bucky thinks America can’t have a female president because she’ll blow up New Zealand if she gets her period.
