Because another film portraying a captive whale being released into the wild as if that’s something that can feasibly happen in real life is just what we need right now.

Anyway isn't the premise of Free Willy highly anachronistic anyway? A smaller theme park only having one Killer whale is pretty dated now as that was more of a thing back in the 60's through to the 1980's. Of course most smaller parks wouldn't dream to do such a thing now with how much it costs to care for an orca (welfare issues aside), as I'd imagine they would have found out pretty quickly back in the day.

Unless this reboot will be set in the past, say the 70's or 80's, instead of the 90's like with the original Free Willy.

In flexion tests you hike up the horses legs and hold for 60 seconds before trotting off. Simply putting a little twist on the limb while hiking it up can make any horse look crippled.

At this point, everytime "sanctuary" is suggested by the anti-zoo/aquarium crowd, I feel like Inigo Montoya.

Yep! I mean at least for some species, sanctuaries do actually exist. But if you tell them is just a poorly regulated zoo and is still captivity - usually with less enrichment opportunities, they get very mad at you :')

The problem is that people uncritically believe that "sea sanctuaries" are 1) real and ready to take in whales and 2) that they are objectively an improvement for welfare.

At this point we just need to slap the word "Sanctuary" onto any new marine mammal facility and people will think its fine.

Not to mention that there is a huge issue of disinformation on the internet,with AI seeping into everything - I've seen at least 5 different "feel good news stories" with AI images claiming that dolphins and whales were moved to a sea sanctuary or successfully released into the ocean. It's actually scary that people are uncritically believing that.

Anyway, like I said, her necropsy isn’t even complete yet, and won’t be for weeks. Cause of death will eventually be publicly available through the monthly Marine Mammal Inventory Report. The public doesn’t need to see the full necropsy report, since the average person doesn’t have the training to properly interpret them. They’re medical documents. I went through veterinary school, and I have a hard enough time myself weeding through the pathology jargon.

Also… “the public mourns yet another loss”? The public? No one is more grieved by the loss of an animal they raised and cared for every day for 11 years than the SeaWorld team. We can be heartbroken, but this is their loss.

Again with the sanctuaries. A sanctuary is still captivity. These whales will always be captive. And as we’re seeing with the Marineland Antibes whales, the “shows” (aka training and exercise sessions) continue on, even without audiences or music.
