Considering the fact he’s set up to be like an antagonist force in the Heavens for Xie Lian Pei Ming is such a wild side character like:

He’s probably aromatic

He’s older than Xie Lian by maybe 5 years maybe 100s it’s really vague

He is constantly following his dick into places I wouldn’t go with a gun

He isn’t actually antagonistic to Xie Lian at all despite all the behind the scenes manipulation trying to make that happen

Him and Xie Lian share custody of a 250 year old war criminal

He’s the text book example of why “I was just following orders” is really fucking bad

He has an incredibly strong sense of justice

He’s best friends with the most evil woman and second most evil man in heaven for most of the novel

He’s genuinely a good person

He’s so charismatic his best friend/situation-ship tried to make him king without asking him

He’s so distraught about what happened with The Rain Master he runs away from her for +800 years of existence

He’s a slut

He’s a Hualian shipper

Despite being probably the third strongest Martial God in the series he spends all of Mount Tonglu with a broken elbow and being comic relief

He genuinely believes he and Hua Cheng are buds

He somehow didn’t have any children so instead he tries to trust fund kid his 17 times great grand nephew who was raised by the most humble man ever and can’t work out why the kid won’t let him buy his way out of jail

He wants to talk to Xie Lian about his sex life

He spends most of the last book being depressed that one of his best friends is dead and another is on the run

People pray to him for long lasting relationships

A tsundre ghost is trying to kill him

Jun Wu was actively running a smear campaign against him the entire time

He was part of the magical girl sword

He’s the slut of the heavens

He is both so tried and living by the motto fuck it we ball

He’s the only other man Xie Lian finds handsome

He was the first person to realise E’Ming was a boner metaphor

He’s scared of the bull man who hates him

He is probably going to be the next heavenly emperor since Xie Lian doesn’t want that shit

He’s the only martial god who genuinely likes and respects Ling Wen until Xie Lian shows up

He says “Ho Ho” when Hualian kiss

A few years ago, I started reading the tgcf manhua online and quickly expanded to a few other manhuas on that website. When the website was taken down, there were a few series I never got to finish, and I figured I probably never would be able to find them again.

Fast forward to this weekend when I was wandering through a bookstore and saw a danmei series I’d never seen before. I picked up the book and read the description, which sounded… familiar. Then it mentioned the “heart lamp” and I realized this was a the manhua story I never thought I’d be able to finish!

I’m so excited to get back into Dinghai Fusheng Records, and especially to do so with the novels! And apparently there’s even another series in this universe when I finish this one.

What a fucking magical Sunday.

In modern AUs, SQH and SY are often the voice of reason for the other one going “obviously you’re gay/obviously he likes you”, and while that's often a useful narrative tool for the author, it's a big departure from their canon dynamic-- I want more of them affirming each other’s belief that their love interest is going to kill them!!!

Yeah bro I think the student you failed last semester because he went missing for 3 months when his long lost father kidnapped him is definitely planning to make you disappear. Oh your boss? Yeah That's not a 'I'm going to fire you' glare, that's a 'I have a secluded forest picked out' glare, better start planning a long trip out of the country!

One of the things I like about MXTX's writing is that she seems to be paying close attention to the way her characters are informed by their backgrounds - in good and bad ways, but always uncompromisingly.

No one is just BAD for the sake of it - every character that has more than two lines of dialogue was formed by their circumstances.

And that includes the good characters - good people in her works are good, because they had the opportunity to be good. Which is not something that is comfortable to realise and admit, but still is there.

Wei Wuxian and Xue Yang represent it in a good way, but Xie Lian and Qi Rong are imho the best example of that narrative technique.

People act as if XL is this inherently good and kind person who just is choosing to be good against all odds and is just better than anyone else because of that... When, in truth, Xie Lian formed his kind personality in insanely supportive environment - he was never lacking, he was loved by his parents, lauded by everyone, pretty much considered to be a superior being from the moment he could walk. He had everything going for him and in that environment it wasn't really hard for him to decide he wants to naively dedicate himself to help "commone people" even if he had absolutely no idea what these "common people's" lives were like. Growing up kind and generous was easy for him.

Qi Rong also came from wealth, technically he had the same opportunities XL had - except his life and formative years were full of horrific abuse. He could have been another Xie Lian, if his journey didn't start with the full knowledge of humanity's worst side and no naivety left.

Being good person against all odds - choosing good even against your own good - is an admirable trait and XL is a solidly an interesting character for being written this way. But a few times recently I've seen people saying that his Masked Era was such a win because "he had all the excuses to become evil and didn't take them!" and it kinda rubs me the wrong way. Because yeah, XL didn't choose the road of resentment and personal revenge and short-lived gratification...

But neither did Qi Rong. Neither did Xue Yang. How can you make a choice when you don't know that other options exist? When they are not open for you? When "believing that people are inherently good" isn't a question because in your most hard-baked experience they never were?

I dunno where I want to go with this, but I've been thinking recently on how the novel characters are written and how the readers seem to be experiencing them, and it's an interesting way of discovering cultural and personal biases in others and myself🤔

I agree that MXTX does a good job at giving readers context for how every character's background impacts their world view and their actions, even for side characters. However, I also feel like this post is tip-toeing a bit too close to determinism. And in fact, I think the entire theme of TGCF is that one's circumstances do not necessarily dictate one's goodness. At the very least, that's the entire point of the Jun Wu/Xie Lian parallel.

(Spoilers ahead if you have not finished the books)

Jun Wu and Xie Lian have the same history up through their ascension. They're both crowned princes with strong natural talents, devoted believers, and all the privilege life can bring. When Xie Lian defeats the ghost on the bridge, he says, "Body in the abyss, heart in paradise," which pisses off Jun Wu because he specifically has the belief you are putting forward here. Jun Wu fell from grace because of all the suffering he endured. He does not believe that people can endure the kind of suffering he did and NOT fall. So he makes it his mission to cause so much suffering in Xie Lian's life that he will resort to the same kind of evil that Jun Wu did. And he almost succeeds. Until Xie Lian chooses to believe in humanity, despite everything he has been through.

Now, obviously this is slightly different from the examples you had. Xie Lian and Jun Wu come from a state of privilege, but Qi Rong starts out his life in an abusive situation. His fundamental understanding of people is that they are bad and that they are going to hurt him. How could he possibly believe any different of humanity? But again, TGCF has an answer to that. Hua Cheng also grew up being horribly abused, and he even confesses to Xie Lian that he legitimately wants to murder the children who bully him. He doesn't believe in the goodness of humanity. And even though he never really gains any sort of respect or admiration for humanity at large, he never chooses to harm people just for the sake of hurting others. There are certainly some people he hates and some who he wants to protect, but he never crosses the line into being evil. Or at least, never more so than Xie Lian does. Hua Cheng may not be good, but he isn't bad either.

And you might argue that Hua Cheng actually DID get to see a sign of the goodness in humanity when Xie Lian saved him, but Qi Rong was also repeatedly saved and taken care of by his family. His mother protected him and loved him deeply before she died. His aunt cared for him and made sure he was never wanting. Xie Lian even saved him from bullies, much like he did for Hua Cheng when he was older. And yet, Qi Rong still did horribly monstrous things.

And this isn't even getting into the complicated histories of so many of the side characters.

The thing is, a character's background never dictates whether they will be good or bad in MXTX stories. And in fact, she creates a ton of parallels specifically to show that that ISN'T the determining factor of their lives. Certainly no character is presented as being inherently good or bad, and any fan depiction of them as such is really missing the mark. But the key isn't a character's past. It's their present. It's the decision they chose to make now. And in a lot of those crucial moments, those character defining moments, the decision to be good makes just as much sense as the decision to be bad. What matters is the choice.
