I get that 'Never Love an Anchor' by The Crane Wives is a love song but like. Platonic love. Familial love, friendship? I can see it. I kind of originally thought that.
it's not a romantic song, and never was. emilee petersmark, the frontwoman, is a korean adoptee raised why a white american family. growing up in a predominantly white area, despite her adoptive parents' best efforts, she felt out of place and disconnected from her culture. even when she went back to south korea, it was hard for her to fit in, and she states that "[n]ot a single person spoke to [her] in Korean – it was like [she] had a neon sign over my head spelling 'FOREIGNER,' and the locals steered clear" in the source above. she struggled especially not having any knowledge of her bio mother or why she couldn't raise her. never love an anchor is her stated imagining of why she was put up for adoption, as a way to cope with the disconnect and feeling of not being wanted. it's about a mother feeling unworthy of raising her child, and scared to ruin them.
the lyrics "Do you ever think of me and my two hands? / And wonder why they never soothed your fevers? / And wonder why they never tied your shoes? / And wonder why they never held you gently? / And wonder why they never had the chance to lose you?" are about knowing your child is growing up somewhere without you, wondering if they are wondering about you, and, i would say, hoping they don't resent you. it's just one non-romantic example from the lyrics, but probably the most obvious one, as 'tied your shoes' makes more sense in a mother-child context than a romantic partnership.

my friend liz had her spotify account hacked and literally didn’t realize for a year until I was talking about my decade in review playlist and she looked at hers and it was all brazilian music and she was like oh this explains why I would go to sleep listening to classical music and wake up and it’s playing trap. and also why there are like 30 playlists on my account that I didn’t make. she just thought spotify was like that

also she said her laptop bluescreens every time she connects to the school wifi specifically I guess just to round things out
